Originally a private residence, Woodpeckers has been tastefully extended and adapted to provide every modern convenience, while still retaining a homely atmosphere.

Residents enjoy companionship and can join in with singing, music, exercise and arts and crafts sessions. There is the opportunity for gentle gardening activities in the summer sunshine, and there is a busy pen pal scheme.
The home is registered for nursing care and staffed by dedicated nurses and health care professionals with extensive experience in caring for age-related conditions and fully trained in infection control.

The home is situated in the village of Brockenhurst in the heart of the New Forest and is within walking distance of local shops, the church and doctor's surgery.

At Woodpeckers there is a choice of comfortable lounges where residents can socialise, watch television or spend some quiet time, and an attractive conservatory where many activities take place. It overlooks the pretty landscaped garden which has been purposely designed for wheelchair users. The garden also hosts a water feature and oak-framed gazebo suitable for all weathers.

The dining room provides waitress service and varied choices of home-made food. The meals are balanced and nutritious and special diets can be catered for.

The bedrooms are tastefully furnished and most have en-suite facilities for privacy and convenience. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms by bringing their own pictures, ornaments and small pieces of furniture.

We can spend a lot of time in the garden, which is very well kept.

My mother has been a resident in Woodpeckers since January 2020 and although reluctant at first she cannot praise the home enough now. She is well looked after, all
medical needs are taken care of, food and room of a high standard and activities daily for her needs.
Things have obviously been difficult
over the last few months due to the virus and visiting very restricted. This has been done for the benefit of the residents and the absence of COVID which has proven successful. Even throughout this, I have spoken every day by phone to my mother and staff have also kept me up to date with her medical changes and also let me know any activities she has taken part in. I cannot speak highly enough of Woodpeckers and if anyone has any doubt about putting a member of there family in a care home I would recommend an appointment to have a look inside and talk to the residents to see how well this one is run. Thanks again to all staff and manager here.

I have Parkinson's I came here to be looked after. I have been well looked after and I feel very secure here. I and the family are very happy that I made the move here and intend to stay for the foreseeable future. The staff are excellent and treat me very well.

An extremely high level of professional care and consideration was shown to my mother until the time of her death. All staff members involved in her care worked efficiently and sympathetically as a team. We moved Mum to Woodpeckers from another home where the quality of care was variable. At Woodpeckers,

My husband has now been here for 2 and a half years and cannot speak too highly of the care he receives.

Everyone is friendly and caring. Our mother has settled in well and has put on much-needed weight. The idea of lunching with her is excellent, as is the food. Today, a Friday, we were most impressed with the therapeutic effect of visiting groups of schoolchildren (including preschool).

From the moment I first contacted Woodpeckers to request respite care for my mother, we experienced nothing but kindness, warmth and a lovely welcome.
Without exception, the staff have been professional, gentle, kind, considerate and hugely caring. They were attentive to my mother's needs and ensured
she was settled, comfortable and content.
My heart sang when I witnessed just how caring, patient and respectful they were with the residents, particularly those who needed additional attention at meal times.
The food was plentiful, varied and cooked nicely. The bedroom was comfortable and had a beautiful view.
All the staff - from reception to cleaners, to nursing care to food provision and service, through to management were welcoming, friendly, approachable, attentive and kind.
I was impressed not only by the thoroughness with which my mother was assessed medically but also the communication from the nursing staff to keep myself updated and aware of her medical situation. My only sadness was the limit of activities available - many activities appeared to have been planned but frequently they were cancelled and intellectual stimulation very limited. That aside, should my mother require further respite care in the future, I would not hesitate to approach Woodpeckers again. Thank you.

Thank you for your review and likelihood to recommend the home. Activities at Woodpeckers are always planned in advanced and advertised around the home so that our residents know what to look forward to over the month ahead, however, the Companionship Team will always adapt the program to meet the needs of the residents who attend on the day as best they can. This sometime means that activities may be changed or moved to a different time and if this has led to any disappointment for your mother then we absolutely apologise for this.
In the 4 weeks that your mother stayed with us at Woodpeckers, we found her to be a very social person who could often be found visiting residents in their rooms’ and making conversation with them. As well as socialising with those in the home, your mother was also regularly visited by her family and friends. This sometimes meant that your mother was unable to attend the scheduled activities, however, around these times she attended activities and minibus trips on most days and met one-to-one with members of the Companionship Team so that they could get to know her better.
In response to your feedback, we have reviewed the past 3 months ‘What’s On’ planners and identified a lack of activities that focus on mental stimulation. We accept that to cater for all residents it is important to provide a varied and balanced activity planner than currently on offer. One that delivers elements of mental stimulation, physical activity and social engagement equally, so that residents receive a rounded program that improves their overall wellbeing.
If your mother were to join us at Woodpeckers again, as we hope that she will, she can feel confident that we have taken all the above into consideration so that her experience of the Companionship program will be a better one. We will be acting on these reflections to improve the experiences of the other residents currently living at Woodpeckers and are grateful for the comments made and the opportunity it provides us to improve.

This is a care home where I can visit and walk away knowing my dad has the best care possible. There is always a cheery word as you walk in.
Every member of the staff is kind and friendly, not only to the residents but also to their families.

Very caring and supportive staff, especially during the first few weeks when my mother found the transition into care very disorientating, where she became very confused. Over the last few months, she has settled well and loves all the care, attention and good humour shown by all. She enjoys the atmosphere
in the activities and has made many friends. The constant battle with memory loss is dealt with reassurance and constant kindness. A special place.

From day one when our mother was very reluctant, all the staff have shown a great deal if care and understanding. There is a very positive atmosphere and this is evident through all the levels of what makes Woodpeckers not just a care home but a home. We had tried to keep our mother in her own home
but this is the next best place.
They are very professional, alongside a high degree of personal care. It is light and bright with access to the lovely garden, all of which is maintained at a high level.
There is no pressure on residents to join in a very food variety of activities, yet there is still a sense of inclusivity if they choose not to take part. Attention is there if needed but low key when not required. Well done Woodpeckers.

When arriving, after checking who we were and whom we were visiting, a warm and friendly smile and words were directed at us and to who we were visiting. All staff encountered were very friendly and courteous, again with a smile. We clearly observed our friend, who was in a wheelchair, being very well
looked after with gentle, caring patience and understanding from the staff. Finally, after visiting various homes, Woodpeckers stood out to be the best!
