Carleton Lodge and Carleton Mead stand side by side, overlooking the busy sea bay, with views all the way to France.

The Royal Marines bandstand is on the green a few minutes away and musical concerts in the summer are a great feature of Deal life. The Deal Lifeboat centre and the yachting club nearby adds to the local marine interest of the Walmer area. Good local shops, the town centre and Deal Castle are a short distance as are GP surgeries and all other services.

All rooms are thoughtfully decorated and equipped and residents are encouraged to bring in their own favourite furniture and possessions. Care workers provide a safe, homely atmosphere and a totally flexible life-style. Emphasis is placed on individuality and independence. Residents enjoy a choice of meals, prepared daily, using freshly purchased, local produce.

Staff are always pleased to meet with visitors to discuss their needs.

I am very pleased with the care that my mum is receiving at the home. Mum's general health has improved since moving in 2 months ago. She has gained weight and her mood has improved. The staff are very caring and attentive and pick up quickly if things are not OK. Every person is treated as an individual
and not just given blanket care. There are activities every day (even on weekends) and weekly trips out. They recently have been to the ballet, the carnival, Walmer Castle even the pub. A couple of weeks ago, they had a summer BBQ in the garden. The staff are all very approachable and listen to any concerns. I would say my mum is thriving since moving in and I feel confident that she is getting very good care and attention. The home is currently being decorated throughout which helps with the feeling of being homely. Throughout the summer I have sat in the garden with mum overlooking Walmer Beach. Couldn't ask for a better view. Overall I would recommend this home to anyone thinking of placing a resident here knowing they would be well cared and looked after in pleasant surroundings.

My mother has been a resident at Carleton Mead for over five years and the difference it has made to our lives has been enormous. The staff are patient, conscientious and work well together as a team. The management team always look for ways to enhance the quality of life of the residents and make maximum
use of the available facilities. My mother is safe and happy. Despite her illness, she has a good quality of life and that is down to the team at Carleton Mead.

Very caring, secure and comfortable environment.
Staff take time and trouble to reassure worried, agitated clients.
If a meal is not eaten, staff will make something else to tempt a jaded appetite.
Staff are great with family - taking time to reassure them too when a client may be irritable or unpleasant,
pointing out that it is the dementia, not the person.
Some staff are particularly good at changing the mood and cajoling people into a more positive frame of mind.


Overall I feel that my mum is safe and happy.

My father spent the last ten months of his life here, in a room with magnificent sea views. The high standard of care he received from all members of staff assured me that he was being very well looked after. With a client centred philosophy, his every wish was considered, his particular food preferences
catered for and his independence encouraged and supported. Relatives were always made to feel welcome and any concerns were swiftly dealt with. The end of life care he received was outstanding!

My mother moved to 'Walmer Care Centre' from another home. I cannot express the change in my mother. She is happy, has a purpose and a love of life again. The activities provided are excellent: Painting, singing, dancing, relaxation, taking trips to the band stand to listen to the bands. The staff are
caring and supportive of the needs of the clients. My mother always looks clean and loves her baths.

Mum moved into Carlton Mead in 2010 with my father, who died aged 98 years in 2012 and were very happy together here. Mum continues to live there and is very happy still and says its "like a five star hotel".

My mother has always been treated with dignity and kindness. Her developing dementia disease has caused her increasing difficulties with communication yet the staffs collective experience, awareness and professionalism have ensured her needs and desires are appropriately met. A range of activities help
to compliment the day to day care.

My Mum was welcomed into the Lodge at 10.30am on Thursday 17th December 2015. She was in a very agitated and confused state having come via A&E having a hearing aid battery removed from her ear canal. This was the climax of a 3 month downward spiral! We were greeted with open arms in the most caring
and compassionate way. Mum was treated with so much kindness. She was tucked up and asleep by 11am! The Care Manager is amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. She phoned and consoled me and offered calm understanding and advice. The whole team are outstanding and gave our 3 noisy boisterous grandchildren an really warm welcome. Mum recovered and flourished in the care at Carleton Lodge. I cannot fault it in any way and will be eternally grateful to the Manager and her team.

I am so grateful that we were able to get my grandparents into this home. My Nan has been here for several years now and I think she feels she's on a permanent holiday with views of the sea and all her needs taken care of - and she loves the food!


While this might not be the most luxurious of

care homes, everything is clean, welcoming and homely. Most important for us however is the warmth, humour and care that the Manager and her team show all of the residents. When you hear so many horror stories about how some of our elderly are treated it is reassuring to know that our Nan is in such good hands. As my Grandad's health failed they were attentive, compassionate and thoughtful, and probably have no idea how much that meant to my Mum.


Everything they do is in the best interests of their residents, whether it's celebrating a birthday or a themed event, ensuring they are staying as active as they can each be, or introducing new initiatives to support the elderly - all the staff are fully engaged and committed. I'm delighted at the introduction of 'Interactive Me' which I think will benefit many of the residents, their families and the staff - it's a real testament of the team's focus on truly supporting the well-being of their residents with dementia.


In a sentence: this team really do put the 'care' into 'care home' and that's what matters most.

I love the place where my mum lives. Everyone who works there have always got time for their clients. It puts my mind at ease knowing that my mum is being looked after in the best possible way. My mum loves the way that the carers make a fuss of her. She loves the food and everywhere is very clean.

I find the staff extremely helpful and vey kind and caring with the residents and always find time to reassure them when they became anxious. Rooms are always very clean, the food looks good with a lovely menu.

I have been working at Walmer Care for 10 years, I started as a health care assistant and have progressed until becoming the registered manager 2 years ago after completing my level 5. During my time at Walmer I have completed Dementia Care matters course, implementing person centred care and breaking down barriers within the home through staff training and environmental changes. I am motivated to improve our residents quality of life from the moment they get here and ensure they receive an outstanding level of care.

I have been at Walmer Care Centre for 17 years, and have been providing activates at the home for 10 years, I have an NVQ2 in Health and social care and have completed both Napa Training and daily sparkle training to enable we to provide those activities in the best way possible. In 2016, I was the first person to win the Kent in Care award for putting people first. My hope is to provide person centred and life history driven activities for all our residents however far along their dementia journey they are.

I have been with Walmer Care Centre for over 20 years, providing a balanced and nutritious diet for the residents. I have a City & Guilds qualification in food preparation and food safety from Canterbury Technical College and have also achieved a supervisory kitchen management qualification. I really enjoy a themed challenge but the most rewarding part is seeing our residents enjoy lovely home cooked food.
