Located in the picturesque seaside town of Deal in Kent, St Winifreds is a residential and general nursing care home providing specialist care for older people, including those with a diagnosis of dementia. With 52 rooms, the Home is set in a Grade II listed building with purpose-built extensions and outstanding amenities. The team cares for residents with dignity, empathy and understanding, and are fully trained to a high level in Advanced Dementia Care.

The Home also has a full-time Physiotherapist to support residents with rehabilitation, including bespoke packages for day care or short-term placements. Physiotherapy services also help with improving peoples’ strength, avoiding or reducing falls, contractures, and improved overall well-being.

35 bedrooms have ensuite facilities and the Home has three large lounges with easy chairs, large-screen TVs and a separate dining area. There is also a well-equipped activity provision and residents can enjoy the secure, peaceful gardens and outdoor seating.

Socialising forms an important part of daily life St Winifreds and team members ensure that there is something on offer for everyone, including group sing-a-longs, visits from musicians and entertainers and trips out to local beach. Residents are encouraged to remain active and pursue hobbies and interests, both old and new.

One of the first care providers to champion the importance of nutrition for the elderly and those with Dementia, Nellsar employ a Head of Nutrition and Wellness for their Homes. St Winifreds acknowledges that nutrition and hydration are an integral part of good health and well-being, delivering well-balanced, nutritious meals and snacks to residents every day.

Employing the Care Vision® digital care management system throughout the Home ensures that the entire care service delivery, recording and reporting systems are optimised and centred around residents and their personalised care.

My mum was a resident from December 2022 until she passed in June 2024. The care she received was second to none. The staff took the time to get to know Mum and she was more than just a resident. Mum loved the activities, always having freshly painted nails, knitting, singing and quizzes. The end-of-life
care they provided was incredible. They were kind, compassionate and so gentle with Mum and us as a family. We camped out there for 4 days and they made us meals, washed our clothes and provided towels for a shower. Nothing was too much trouble. The home itself is clean and secure and the food always smells delicious. You won't find a better home or staff to take care of your loved ones. They treat them like family.

Very pleasant home with welcoming and helpful staff. Cleanliness and security are very important, all visitors are encouraged to think about the security of residents and to leave doors and gates secure. Care and medical support is provided professionally and always with empathy. All staff in all areas
seem to be cheerful and happy to work and provide any assistance at any time.

My brother was transferred from a hospice to St Winifred's for end-of-life care. It was his wish to go there and they looked after his needs/problems extremely well. He was happy and comfortable and was grateful to all the staff for looking after him. My wife and I extend our thanks for all the care
they gave my brother and can recommend the care home to anyone wishing and in need of their service.

If there is ever a health concern or other problem, I am always promptly contacted with details of the issue, what is being done and if I have any comments myself. This month, saw Mother celebrating her 90th birthday, and despite being very busy, all the wonderful staff went beyond expectations to make
this a special day for us all.
I am always made welcome with a cheerful smile and any questions answered and concerns rectified. It is a lovely arrival and hearing happy singing. Also, there are never any bad smells, always fresh smelling.

The staff were so kind to my father-in-law as he was at the end of his life. They kept him comfortable and pain-free. They also really looked after my mother-in-law when she visited, showing such care and compassion. We could not have asked for more in such sad circumstances.

They are looking after him very well and keeping him safe, making sure he doesn't fall. The nursing staff are knowledgeable and proactive in treating infections early, to prevent hospital stays.

My mother has been a resident at St Winifred's since mid-July 2023 where she was sent directly from a hospital stay when it sadly became clear she could no longer cope at home. It has been a great relief to our family to know that she is cared for and safe in her new environment. I have nothing but
respect and admiration for the dedicated and caring staff I have encountered every day. When shopping for a home, I was advised to look out for how the staff engage, well on every point they have met and at times surpassed our expectations. The nurses and carers are amazing and really understand how to work with challenging dementia patients. Of course not every day is perfect and whenever I have had a concern, the manager and/or liaison officer have listened and heard me. I know it's safe to let them know if something isn't quite right on the odd occasion and they will get to the bottom of it and fix it. We feel fortunate that we found St Winifred's.

My parents came to live here in March and a suitable room was found for them to share. My father recently died and the staff were extremely kind and caring to him and my mum. I was particularly pleased that two members of staff were able to assist my mother to dad's funeral in a wheelchair using the
minibus. This enabled her to go to the church, the burial and the wake and meet old friends. Wonderful.

It’s a difficult decision when putting a relative in for respite, you worry if they will be happy and cared for. From the moment I spoke to the first member of staff on the phone, I felt comforted.
My father has Alzheimer’s and dementia and does need nursing care. They invited us over for a visit and
asked me to take Dad. It was such a lovely welcome. The clients seemed very happy.
All staff seemed so friendly, some were sitting in the rest room doing activities.
The restaurant (their own eating area) was set so beautifully and all home-cooked food! It’s the little things.
His room was very clean and I explained that he liked looking out the window. They immediately changed the room around and got the chair by the window.
All the staff we came across were extremely kind and caring, with the most welcoming smiles and they seemed so caring it was a pleasure to meet you all. My dad has had three weeks respite. He was so happy and that’s all I needed. Dad will definitely be back. Thank you.

My husband is a resident at this home and is very happy here.
I find the staff all very kind and pleasant. They keep me in touch with all the things going on with my husband, which I find reassuring as I am not in good health myself and can't go and see him very often.

The staff at St Winifreds have made a massive difference to my dad's well-being. He was barely able to walk when he arrived; he now walks unaided, his skin integrity was poor, and it is now better than ever; this is a massively person-centred home. It is very clean and tidy, and the food and activities

My mother always appears to be happy, comfortable and clean. All the staff are extremely friendly and informative and they maintain regular contact via email or telephone. Recently, my mother had to swap rooms, but the staff ensured that all her personal items and decorative possessions (pictures and
ornaments) were equally transferred to the new room.

Long waits to get into the entrance door.
The walls need repainting.

I am very sorry you had some concerns, and I hope the contact made with you by the manager was helpful. I understand you have had a chat, and the manager is looking at ways to ensure the doorbell is heard in more areas for a quicker response during periods when the admin office is closed. I believe the manager also shared our redecoration programme with you, which has been underway for several months with a conclusion expected at the end of September, which will certainly brighten the walls you mentioned. I hope that the personal information shared will have reassured you in respect of access to the shower and the freedom for residents to wander has been explained with measures we take to protect the privacy of residents whilst also encouraging activity, recreation and socialising.

My Mum has been at St Winifeds for nearly two years. The care has always been good but in recent months the atmosphere has vastly improved and Mum seems very happy. Special mention for the activities team who make sure there's always something going on. Also to resident family liaison - contact is easy
and all concerns are dealt with sympathetically, efficiently and with humour.

St Winifreds has a wonderful caring and welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are always clean as is the rest of the premises. The dining room is always set with fresh flowers on the tables, it looks so inviting. There are always stimulating activities on offer each day as well as trips out in the minibus.
I am so pleased my Mum is a resident here.

Staff are caring and happy to help. The dining area is clean and welcoming. The bedroom is always clean with the bed made. The food is good and looks nice. The garden is being revamped now, so that will be nice for the summer.

My experience of St Winifreds, both residential and nursing, has been an extremely positive one. Their care and going the extra mile have been heartwarming. My partner, who has vascular dementia and is sadly now end-of-life care, has been given every possible care and his dignity respected throughout.

At first, I was very upset, as it was not my choice for him to be sent there, but as it happens, the Care Centre was the best place for him. I can not tell you how much I appreciate the kindness and support the staff and carers gave not only to my husband and me but my family. St Winifreds is a caring
and loving home for anyone who is fortunate to be placed there. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. A wonderful home.

Tracy

Tracy Wright

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2022

Tracy joined Nellsar in February 2022, bringing with her over 30 years of experience in the social care sector.


Having worked in various roles in residential Care Homes from age 16, Tracy’s career changed direction when she decided to become a Trainer and achieved a degree in Education. Tracy then worked as a Lecturer in Health and Social Care and Early Years, helping people begin or progress their nursing or care careers. Passionate about making a difference, Tracy enjoys helping her teams develop their skills; She works to ensure comforting environments and a superior person-centred care provision for all our residents.

Wendy

Wendy Wood

Job Title: Head of Residential Care Joined: 1985

Wendy has worked at St Winifred's Care Centre since 1985; she was a part of the team when Nellsar bought the Care Home in 1999; "I started my journey as a Carer and soon worked my way up to a Senior Carer. I then became head of our St Andrews Unit and am now Head of Residential which I am very proud of."


Wendy has gained a lot of qualifications since working for Nellsar; "I have completed my NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care. I have also completed a lot of training for Dementia and End-of-life Care, to name a few, which has been vital to improving my knowledge and understanding of our residents' needs."


Taking great pride in her role, Wendy ensures our residents are provided with the highest level of care – "We really are a family unit." And she cites her biggest accomplishment as coming runner-up in the Kent Care Awards where her contribution to care was acknowledged.

Athulya

Athulya Mathews

Job Title: Registered Nurse Joined: 2022

Athulya joined the team at St. Winifred Care Home as a Registered Nurse in 2022. A passionate Skincare Champion for our residents, Athulya enjoys talking to them and learning all about their lives; “I love supporting our ladies and gentlemen in their care, and their everyday needs, to ensure their time with us is special.”

Janey

Janey Eason

Job Title: Head of Housekeeping Joined: 2021

Having first started at St Winifred's Care Centre as a Carer, Janey soon realised her skills would be better utilised for housekeeping; "I worked my way up to Head of Housekeeping which I’m very happy about."


Janey takes a lot of pride in ensuring the Home is kept clean and looks respectable at all times; "Myself and my team work hard to ensure the Home is kept clean to the highest standard."


St. Winifreds is currently undergoing a full makeover which Janey is very excited to see and to be a part of.

Tina

Tina Stringer

Job Title: Recreation and Well-Being Lead Joined: 2020

Tina loves her job and she is passionate about bringing person-centred, meaningful activities to all of our wonderful residents; "Recreation is not just fun and games – although it is an amazing part of it. I love making our residents smile, but it is also about ensuring our residents feel secure, heard and comfortable in their own homes. It is important to remember who they are and to cherish this."


Having previously worked at a day centre, Tina has been part of the team at St. Winifred's Care Centre since 2020; "I love working for Nellsar and their values resonate with me. I have an NVQ Level 2 along with various other certificates. I have a passion to enhance our residents’ lives. I have worked as Recreation and Well-Being Lead since 2021."

Maxine

Maxine Nesbitt

Job Title: Carer and Laundry Assistant Joined: 2022

Maxine is a versatile team member having worked in most departments; she has a good understanding of the Home and why each role is so important; "I’ve only worked at St Winifred's Care Centre since 2022 but feel like I’ve really settled into the Nellsar family and feel supported by my team. I love my role as a Carer which I find very rewarding. I love to put a smile on the resident's faces and make them laugh with my bad, out-of-tune singing."
