Located in the picturesque seaside town of Deal in Kent, St Winifreds is a residential and general nursing care home providing specialist care for older people, including those with a diagnosis of dementia. With 52 rooms, the Home is set in a Grade II listed building with purpose-built extensions and outstanding amenities. The team cares for residents with dignity, empathy and understanding, and are fully trained to a high level in Advanced Dementia Care.

The Home also has a full-time Physiotherapist to support residents with rehabilitation, including bespoke packages for day care or short-term placements. Physiotherapy services also help with improving peoples’ strength, avoiding or reducing falls, contractures, and improved overall well-being.

35 bedrooms have ensuite facilities and the Home has three large lounges with easy chairs, large-screen TVs and a separate dining area. There is also a well-equipped activity provision and residents can enjoy the secure, peaceful gardens and outdoor seating.

Socialising forms an important part of daily life St Winifreds and team members ensure that there is something on offer for everyone, including group sing-a-longs, visits from musicians and entertainers and trips out to local beach. Residents are encouraged to remain active and pursue hobbies and interests, both old and new.

One of the first care providers to champion the importance of nutrition for the elderly and those with Dementia, Nellsar employ a Head of Nutrition and Wellness for their Homes. St Winifreds acknowledges that nutrition and hydration are an integral part of good health and well-being, delivering well-balanced, nutritious meals and snacks to residents every day.

The staff show kindness and care towards my parent. The room is clean and she is well looked after. Requests have been listened to. The food is good and she is happy with it. She enjoys the activities that are provided.

My dad looked very happy when I visited - he always does.
All the staff make me feel very welcome when I visit.
My dad really trusts the staff, and they treat him like family.
He is always in clean clothes, and all other residents that I pass are very clean. His room is clean, the bed sheets clean
and no odour.
Thank you - means a lot to me and my family, knowing my dad is being so well looked after and cared for.

During the Covid pandemic, as visitors, we have been unable to see our relatives in their rooms, only in an office fitted and full of safety, on a Zoom. Therefore, unable to comment on some items. However, it is obvious tour residents are receiving excellent care and attention, and we are very grateful.

My dad has been in the care home now for a few months, and he is extremely well looked after. I am also well informed and updated by the staff about what is happening with my dad. Dad has had a couple of infections since being at the home, and both times, he received the medical attention that he required.

My aunt went into St Winifred’s Care home for respite, back in March 2019.
We found the staff to be excellent. Our aunt decided she would return to St Winifred’s after a short return home.
The wonderful team supported her every need. The happiness we saw in our aunt was just fantastic. Support from
the residents welcoming her into the group. St Winifred’s have great activities, and encourage family to participate in family days. We are very lucky to see our aunt spend just over a year with the caring staff.

My mother went into this home December 2019 just for respite due to my health and was to be only for a few weeks until I was able to continue to look after her. Mum was living in a flat on her own with myself visiting every day. Mum is a diabetic and with kidney problems she had good days and bad
days. The staff at the home made her so comfortable and giving her the purpose for living that she asked if she could stay on a permanent basis. Mum and I talked hard and long and I have not looked back since. She has friends around her and the care staff and nursing staff have looked after her and listened to her in the best way possible. I did get recommendations from family and friends when deciding which care home was best and there is no question that St Winifreds in Deal is the best. Keep up the great work you are doing.

St Winifreds is like a home from home. Very comfortable atmosphere, not the least bit clinical. My Mother in law (89) is very happy and content thanks to the wonderful staff. She is a vegetarian and chef makes sure she gets a varied menu to choose from, nothing is too much trouble.
Throughout the COVID-19
pandemic the home has been amazing, not one patient contracting the disease. I would highly recommend St. Winifreds to all.

My mother went to St Winifreds to live just over a year ago. She is 93 and has vascular dementia and Alzheimer's. She has been very well cared for, especially during this difficult lockdown period which was introduced by The Home before the majority of the country and I'm sure this decision has helped
to keep everyone safe.

My mother is very happy here and they provide excellent care which meets her needs. During the outbreak, I have been updated regularly on her wellbeing along with photos by email from the manager. So apart from not being able to see my mum as of the understandable shutdown and precautions put in place
I am pleased that all residents and staff have been well through this and I have no worries on the care for my mum and look forward to being able to visit in the coming weeks. I on a personal level have never had any issues with all involved and find it is an excellent place and would always recommend to anybody.

My 93-year-old mother has now been a resident at St Winifred’s for four years. She has vascular dementia and over the years her mental and physical condition has slowly deteriorated. The caring staff have constantly reviewed her care plan to ensure that she receives the best possible care. She is encouraged
to eat the well-prepared meals and to take part in activities. The staff are all very pleasant and cheerful and keep me well informed.

We had to find somewhere for my mother at short notice last Autumn as she was discharged from hospital and could no longer cope on her own. The hospital found a place at St Winifred's which we had imagined would be short term while we searched for permanent care (I have to admit my knowledge of St Winifred's
dates from the 80's and trust me it has changed a lot). 8 months later and mum is still there, really happy, cared for, and most of all safe. The team at St Winifred's are absolutely lovely, the atmosphere is caring and warm, I am so glad a place came up when we needed it. I would thoroughly recommend it.

My wife spent her last few weeks in the home, unfortunately, she passed away. The home looked after her extremely well and I know she was made really comfortable and happy whilst she was there. Although my wife was only at the home for a short time, they did a fantastic job looking after her.

My mother-in-law was only at the home for a short time as unfortunately, she passed away on the 10th. Whilst she was there, they took extremely good care of her, she was quite unwell and they made her comfortable and happy in her last few weeks. We are extremely great full to all the staff for the attention
and compassion they gave her during her last few weeks.

My Stepdad used to go to St Winifreds for respite care until it got too much for us to have him at home, after one such stay he said he would happily live at St Winifreds full time!! I think that says more than I ever can - he loves it there and they seem to love having him there.
The staff are so
good to him and nothing is too much trouble for them. Since the pandemic things are a little harder for the staff, residents and relatives but thankfully Dad is on the ground floor and I can 'speak' to him through the window when I take his TV paper.
Also since the pandemic, the relatives get a weekly report from the Manager so we all know how the staff are coping, what is happening and how our relatives are.
I know if I have any concerns I can ring and get any answers I need.

The staff at St. Winifred's are always approachable, professional and friendly. They show an incredible amount of care and affection towards their residents. During the Covid crisis, we have been very impressed by their commitment to keeping residents safe and keeping relatives informed of progress.
During 'lockdown', my mother celebrated a milestone birthday. Obviously, family members were unable to be with her in person but the staff went above and beyond expectations, making sure her birthday was celebrated and that she had a very special day. This is just one example of the personal care and attention my mother has received during her time at the home.

My Mother-in-Law has been a resident at St Winifreds for just over 5 years, and I am more than happy with the care and attention she has received.
Due to various health issues in the past, every hospital visit/stay was organised with thought relieving me of that burden.
The group had the foresight
to stop visitors almost 2 weeks before other Care Homes, thus protecting Staff and Residents.
We are thankful that possibly that is the reason why there have been no cases of Covid-19 at St Winifreds. Regular updates are sent, which keep us well informed.
The Management and the Staff are doing an exemplary job in these challenging times.

I have been extremely impressed with the way St. Winifreds has handled this pandemic. At the beginning, they closed down visiting a few weeks before the actual lockdown, which was hard but very sensible. They have had very strict rules and no residents have caught the virus, the girls there have been
keeping residents entertained and even has a carer that has been singing to them and learning more songs to keep them entertained.
I know all of this because every week the Manager emails a newsletter tellings us what's going on and keeping us up to date, we also have pictures of our relatives, which are lovely to see after so long.
I am very happy my mother is there, the girls (and boys) are all so lovely, I phone regularly and the staff are always happy to take my calls.

I had to move my wife from the previous care home under considerable duress and I can’t praise St. Winifreds staff and management enough. It was like walking into a different world. My wife started to mix again and wanted to explore on her first day. The carers do a great job and treat residents and
visitors alike they always have time to update me on my wife’s condition and her general demeanour each day before I actually see my wife. The first thing I noticed was management and staff always have a smile for you - which helps a lot!
I’d like to say a big thank you to them all especially for their work and amount of effort they have all endured due to the ongoing Coronavirus scare. Very well done!

Tracy Wright

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2022

Tracy joined Nellsar in February 2022, bringing with her over 30 years of experience in the social care sector.


Having worked in various roles in residential Care Homes from age 16, Tracy’s career changed direction when she decided to become a Trainer and achieved a degree in Education. Tracy then worked as a Lecturer in Health and Social Care and Early Years, helping people begin or progress their nursing or care careers. Passionate about making a difference, Tracy enjoys helping her teams develop their skills; She works to ensure comforting environments and a superior person-centred care provision for all our residents.

Wendy

Wendy Wood

Job Title: Head of Residential Care Joined: 1985

Wendy has worked at St Winifred's Care Centre since 1985; she was a part of the team when Nellsar bought the Care Home in 1999; "I started my journey as a Carer and soon worked my way up to a Senior Carer. I then became head of our St Andrews Unit and am now Head of Residential which I am very proud of."


Wendy has gained a lot of qualifications since working for Nellsar; "I have completed my NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care. I have also completed a lot of training for Dementia and End-of-life Care, to name a few, which has been vital to improving my knowledge and understanding of our residents' needs."


Taking great pride in her role, Wendy ensures our residents are provided with the highest level of care – "We really are a family unit." And she cites her biggest accomplishment as coming runner-up in the Kent Care Awards where her contribution to care was acknowledged.

Athulya

Athulya Mathews

Job Title: Registered Nurse Joined: 2022

Athulya joined the team at St. Winifred Care Home as a Registered Nurse in 2022. A passionate Skincare Champion for our residents, Athulya enjoys talking to them and learning all about their lives; “I love supporting our ladies and gentlemen in their care, and their everyday needs, to ensure their time with us is special.”

Janey

Janey Eason

Job Title: Head of Housekeeping Joined: 2021

Having first started at St Winifred's Care Centre as a Carer, Janey soon realised her skills would be better utilised for housekeeping; "I worked my way up to Head of Housekeeping which I’m very happy about."


Janey takes a lot of pride in ensuring the Home is kept clean and looks respectable at all times; "Myself and my team work hard to ensure the Home is kept clean to the highest standard."


St. Winifreds is currently undergoing a full makeover which Janey is very excited to see and to be a part of.

Tina Stringer

Job Title: Recreation and Well-Being Lead Joined: 2020

Tina loves her job and she is passionate about bringing person-centred, meaningful activities to all of our wonderful residents; "Recreation is not just fun and games – although it is an amazing part of it. I love making our residents smile, but it is also about ensuring our residents feel secure, heard and comfortable in their own homes. It is important to remember who they are and to cherish this."


Having previously worked at a day centre, Tina has been part of the team at St. Winifred's Care Centre since 2020; "I love working for Nellsar and their values resonate with me. I have an NVQ Level 2 along with various other certificates. I have a passion to enhance our residents’ lives. I have worked as Recreation and Well-Being Lead since 2021."

Maxine

Maxine Nesbitt

Job Title: Carer and Laundry Assistant Joined: 2022

Maxine is a versatile team member having worked in most departments; she has a good understanding of the Home and why each role is so important; "I’ve only worked at St Winifred's Care Centre since 2022 but feel like I’ve really settled into the Nellsar family and feel supported by my team. I love my role as a Carer which I find very rewarding. I love to put a smile on the resident's faces and make them laugh with my bad, out-of-tune singing."
