Townsend House is a forty-five capacity care home situated in the Headington area of Oxford in peaceful and beautifully tended grounds. Townsend is dedicated to person-centred methods and offering quality residential, early-stage dementia and respite care for older people.

This traditional home from home has some lovely newly refurbished communal lounges where you can enjoy the company of others, take part in activities or simply sit down and read a good book.

It's surrounded by a large beautiful garden, with a plethora of colourful flowers, where many like to enjoy the shade of the mature trees or play a game of chess on the large outdoor chessboard. Inside, there is a themed cafe, which is the perfect spot to invite your family and friends for a coffee and a slice of homemade cake.

There are strong links with the local community who often visit to join in one of their special events.

The Orders of St John Care Trust is a care charity and provider and are respected in the care sector for a flexible range of care provision, making the most of voluntary sector contributions in order to help vulnerable adults achieve a more dignified lifestyle.

Your fees cover several areas while in their care.
These services are: Personal care, accommodation,
utilities, use of communal areas, meals, drinks and
snacks, laundry (excluding dry cleaning),
housekeeping, maintenance and activities run by the
home.


Services NOT included in price are: dentistry, chiropody,
physiotherapy, occupational therapy, opticians, hairdressing,
medications, toiletries, clothing, newspapers/magazines.
During your stay, you may need to purchase additional goods
and services. If they are able to provide such goods and
services, they will tell you how much these goods and services
will cost and they expect that you will pay for these goods and
services at the time you request them.
They can accompany loved ones to private appointments,
however the fee attached to this is £21 per hour. Where private taxi
services are used for transportation to appointments the cost should
be paid for by yourself.

My Father spent 5 years in Townsend House care home, part of The Orders of St John Care Trust, following a stroke. Throughout his time in the home, he has been cared for with love, respect and great dignity. The staff in the home have always been considerate and attentive to my Father's needs and have
been very keen to create an environment of harmony and fun in which my Father felt completely at home. The love and care shown by the staff became apparent at the end of my Father's life;

My mother was not happy here and I was not happy with the level of care. The staff were very kind but the home seemed understaffed for the number of residents. When mother was ill, no medical help was called, although her GP had provided a memo about her delicate health. Despite my continuing requests
to leave her clothes in her room to save things being lost in the laundry, both clean and dirty clothes were removed by the cleaners daily, resulting on one occasion in Mother having no clean clothes and being left in the lounge in her vest. Most residents were taken to the lounge, where they sat in a big circle, making conversation difficult. Mother had no exercise because it was more convenient for the staff to use a wheelchair, although I had explained that she could walk with her frame. She also had a fall, which everyone apologised for but which no-one could explain.
After 10 days' respite care, Mother was confused, disoriented, depressed and in very poor health.

I went to Townsend House for the first time last week to visit an old friend. I was impressed with the home. The staff was very friendly the manager struck me as being a very warm and caring person, what I found different to other homes was that everyone seemed happy and I spoke to others there and
none of them wanted to go home they said they were all looked after well and those that could mix with others did which is extremely different to other homes.

Whenever we have visited the home we have always received a warm welcome.
We have seen that the residents are well cared for individually, and their group therapy sessions appear to be warm, embracing and encouraging.
The home is brightly decorated with many ornaments and pictures. It is kept clean
and warm and we are always offered refreshments, having travelled a fair distance.

Chris

Chris Ruane

Job Title: Administrator Joined: 2015

Chris Ruane is the Administrator at Townsend House. Chris joined OJSCT in 2015 and has worked in administration all her life.
Chris has an NVQ Level 3 in Administration, ILM 1 and 2 in Team Work and Management and has an EU Computer Driving Licence.
Chris was introduced to the care industry through a family member who worked for the Trust. Chris loves the diversity of her role as she gets to meet residents, elderly people and their families.
A particularly fond memory of Chris’s with the residents was when she did a memory walk in the gardens of Oxford which she absolutely loved.
Chris’s hobbies include crochet, barbequing, doing jigsaw puzzles and going for long walks. She also loved caravanning with her children when they were younger and growing vegetables with them.

Lisa

Lisa Oliver

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2024

Lisa joined OSJCT as Home Manager for Townsend House in December 2024. She holds Level 2 and 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care, as well as a qualification in Leadership and Management of Care Services.


With a strong background in the care sector, Lisa is passionate about providing high-quality care and is excited to bring her experience and leadership skills to Townsend House. She looks forward to getting to know her team and making a positive impact within the home.


Outside of work, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family and taking part in outdoor activities. She values the importance of relaxation and reflection in her personal time.

Jackie

Jackie Smith

Job Title: Activity Co-ordinator Joined: 2023

Jackie is the activities coordinator at Townsend House, Headington. She has been in this role since July 2023.


She loves what she does, it's all about making the residents of Townsend smile and laugh. May it be an activity or a one-to-one.


This is her first adventure in a residential home. She has had a diverse career to date. For seven years, she was a food service manager, offering breakfast and lunch to customers.


She has also worked for seven years as a reservation agent, one year as a customer service agent and six years as a supervisor on the ramp.


Her passion for many years with a two-year college certificate is Photography. She shoots anything from weddings, family reunions, and events, and was even a sports photographer. Jackie has had a couple of photos published in books and has hundreds of photos out there in the digital world.


She was raised in England until she was 17, then moved to America. She spent 37 years in Utah and moved home to England in May 2023. She has 3 children and 5 grandchildren.


Her role as an activities coordinator is extremely rewarding. She is learning a lot every single day working with dementia residents, among others. She loves the new journey she's on and looks forward to her career with OSJCT and Townsend House.

Harry

Harry Chant

Job Title: Head of Care Joined: 2023

Harry found his calling in the care industry after leaving school and gaining an NVQ2 and 3 in care whilst working in care homes around Oxford. He joined OSJCT as Head of Care at Townsend House in September 2023. He has an extensive background in care and is excited to join the team at Townsend.


He is hoping to progress his career by completing his NVQ level 5 in home management. Harry enjoys working at Townsend House and feels he is settled in well and is an integral part of the team.


When he's not working, he enjoys socialising with friends.
