My mother had three happy years at Sunrise of Guildford.

Her quality of life was greatly helped by the activities team who organised a wonderful team of visitors, school children, animals, outings and events. The days here are busy and fun. The receptionists played an important role (especially for those who are deaf) with receiving and relaying phone calls and messages. A happy atmosphere, excellent food and welcoming bistro where visitors can make their own drinks when they arrive. Highly recommend.

Found that the staff were willing to go more than the extra mile for my parents. They effectively enabled my mother to die in the presence of my father rather than on her own in hospital.
One of the few providers of a suite of rooms in the care system which meant that my father was able to be with mum at the critical time and was very well supported by nursing staff until my husband and I could get there. They were extremely caring and understanding and handled the last week and a half of my mother's life with great compassion. Many staff were considerate of the whole family's emotions and made what had been a hideous time far more bearable. Even in the middle of the night, I witnessed staff just taking the extra effort to make sure that the people in their care weren't in need of anything.

The home is well kept and attractive but the most important aspect of this home is that the staff genuinely do care about their clients.

Excellent facilities. Attentive staff, good quality food. Sunrise bus for outings is very good. Most staff very caring. Parking not very good. Should inform all quests of the private parking in the road as they regularly try to get penalty charge notices issued.

Staff were always lovely and helpful to our mum, tolerant of her deafness and kind to me and relatives. The helped her settle in quickly as it has been a difficult time to move her all the way to Bristol.

They helped pack, offered us tea and supported our decisions efficiently.

After 10 years of having to keep my wits about me when dealing with Sunrise, my father has just passed away and despite being forewarned NO ONE from Sunrise attended the funeral. I have spoken to several members of staff and they’re very upset that they weren’t told when the funeral was, management knew! Upon clearing my father’s room I have found around 20 of his woollen jumpers and cardigans have been shrunk from a large adult size to about a child age 10!

I met the new manager yesterday who has been at the home only a week and he took my complaints seriously and compassionately. What a shame he wasn’t at Guildford during my Dad’s time.

Mum has been in Sunrise of Guildford for 1 week now and I have seen a huge improvement in her spirits and outlook. She loves the food, the company, the carers - who all care and chat.

Having experienced bad care in the community, Sunrise of Guildford is a Godsend. I cannot speak highly enough of the team. From the admin staff to the carers, to the chef and to the ice cream man.

Thanks for returning mum's dignity.

My wife was a resident for palliative care and died after two weeks. Throughout her stay, she (whilst she was able to) and I found the care quite exceptional.

Certainly, those involved in direct care eg nurses and carers were kind and compassionate while remaining efficient. But this also applied to other staff coming into contact with her eg caterers, cleaners, maintenance staff etc. An exceptional organisation.

My father has significant care needs, stemming from his dementia and broad nursing needs. He was previously asked to leave another care home, which led us to switching to Sunrise. The care, support, understanding and help has been excellent. The home has greatly reduced the burden on his children, as we know he has the best possible care and advice. I could not recommend Sunrise more highly.

Overall Experience

In July 2017 my sisters and I chose Sunrise of Guildford for our parents as it offered facilities for a married couple and because the layout of the home and the fixtures and fittings are all maintained to a highly impressive standard. Sadly, my father's vascular Dementia advanced rapidly, and he died in December. During his short stay at Sunrise, he was looked after well and I believe the carers treated him with compassion and kindness. My mother, who has Alzheimer's, found adjusting to life at Sunrise very hard, and the carers and nurses told us many times that they found her behaviour unpredictable and challenging. So, after Dad's death, we looked at alternative homes for Mum and have moved her to a smaller, specialist Dementia home in Guildford, where she is treated with patience and understanding and she is now much happier. Sunrise management did not ask us why we were moving Mum, and we found that lack of concern disappointing. We also felt that more evening carers would be beneficial!

From the very first contact with the staff at Sunrise, I have had a very positive and supportive experience with my mother, who suffers from dementia. Through every stage of this disease, the staff on the reminiscence floor and elsewhere have taken great care to give mummy the care she has needed.

Although I live in America, The staff managed to keep me informed and involved and never let me worry unnecessarily about her. After her hip operation, she was welcomed back as into a family and given every support necessary. Now in the last days of her life, I sit beside her and staff are caring for us both in the most loving way. I could not be more grateful or thankful.

Both of my parents moved to Sunrise 2 1/2 years ago as my mother's dementia and my father's increasing mobility issues made living in their remote country home too challenging. For my father to have the day to day responsibility for daily life and particularly my mother's care lifted from him was a relief but for my mother, it was disorientating and upsetting. Sunrise has dealt with them very sensitively. The team are highly professional but very friendly and caring. Six months ago my mother was diagnosed with advanced cancer and went downhill incredibly quickly and died. There was never any question of Sunrise not being able to cope with the challenges of palliative care and their professionalism was second to none and their gentle care was exemplary, not only for her but also for my father. He continues to enjoy life there dipping into the community for company and retiring to his room for peace and privacy.

I should say that our mother has only been at Sunrise for a couple of months now so this review is based on our first impressions. However, our initial impressions are top notch in every category highlighted below. The atmosphere of the entire environment is reflective of the mixture of extraordinary warmth and professionalism shown to us by the Director of Community Relations. This approach then appears to flow down through all staff members in the organisation. Critically, this, in turn, leads to a real sense of trust and confidence in Sunrise among my mother's family members and her close friends. Sunrise has given us a dignified, compassionate and elegant solution to a highly emotional and sensitive challenge we found ourselves facing.

My father has been living at Sunrise of Guildford for nearly two years. Once my father settled in, and it does take a while to acclimatise, he has been very happy. He has his own spacious room with a kitchenette and bathroom, he is fed royally and the care given him enables him to live his life without embarrassment or difficulty. Sunrise provides lots of activities which my father takes part in, from flower arranging to painting, from singing in a choir to performing in concerts. The area downstairs is extremely welcoming and the people on reception know everyone and all the relatives and friends coming and going, whilst keeping a watchful eye on everyone. The gardens are delightful. My father was a keen gardener and so he really enjoys a daily walk around the house. I am honestly grateful to everyone who works there for always being cheerful, always approachable, and enabling my father to have a good quality of life despite his infirmities.
