My 93 year old mother has dementia. The decision to move her into a nursing home was only taken a month ago. The atmosphere in Alfriston Court reflects upon the excellent relationship between the manager and all the nursing, care, kitchen and maintenance staff. This, in turn, ensures a relaxing day
to day life for the residents. Everybody working there is warm and welcoming. Activities are available to stimulate physical and mental health and the choice of beautifully presented food allows for individual appetites and needs. The move from home into a nursing home can be difficult for both the resident and their family. The staff here have made that move easier by listening, understanding and having an 'open door' policy at all times. Alfriston Court focuses on the welfare of each individual in a family atmosphere.

Alfriston Court is not like other care homes. It combines the luxury feel and privacy of a hotel with the friendliness of a family home.
The staff are excellent and really care about the residents. My grandmother has really settled in well thanks to their effort and care.
The manager is friendly
and professional. She is very approachable and encourages family input. She has a great understanding of the needs of her residents and works hard with her staff to ensure they are met.
The home has a good range of activities in the home and regularly take the residents out. They also hold open mornings/days for the whole family to come to which are great fun.
The location is absolutely beautiful and my grandmother never tires of the stunning view from her room.
Overall I would highly recommend this care home.

Beautiful setting in the East Sussex countryside that was previously a hotel so rooms and amenities have views, character, size and en-suite bathroom. Mostly permanent staff and hygiene/quality of care is to a high standard.

Anita

Anita Message

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 2018

Anita Message qualified as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) in 1986 before going on to midwifery training and qualifying in 1989.


After having her own three daughters and working in a primary school for many years, specifically on a one-to-one basis with Special Education Needs children, Anita applied for the post of Nurse at Alfriston Court in 2018.


She then secured the role of Head of Care at the beginning of 2020, taking on the Registered Manager Role in 2024 following the retirement of Shirley Eyles.


Anita says: “I once heard that, if you found a job you love, then you would never have to work again. If that’s the case, I can honestly say I haven’t worked a single day since September 2018!”


“Alfriston is one of my all-time favourite villages. The setting of Alfriston Court is quite exquisite. I feel that this really is my dream job. Love every second of it.”


Adam

Adam Hards

Job Title: Head Chef

Joined: 2008

Following his initial training as a chef in a BUPA care home, Adam was headhunted by his former BUPA head chef and persuaded to join him at Alfriston Court as his second chef, having bagged the top job there when it first opened.


Adam quickly worked his way up, completing sought-after qualifications in hospitality supervision and leadership and, when Alfriston’s head chef moved on, Adam was more than able to step up. He is enormously well-liked and has a superb set of skills which keep his menus exciting, nutritious, traditional yet innovative and well-balanced.


Adam takes great pride in delivering the very best quality cuisine for Alfriston Court’s residents and has been a finalist in the Independent Care Home Caterer of the Year Awards.


“It wasn’t something I was looking for at the time, but I’m very happy I grabbed the opportunity to work at Alfriston Court. Becoming Head Chef has allowed me to develop my skills even further and I really enjoy what I do for our lovely residents.”


Vanessa

Vanessa Simmons

Job Title: Activities Co-ordinator

Joined: 2018

Vanessa (aka Nessie, pictured left) was one of the famous Butlins’ Redcoats, a title given to frontline staff at Butlins holiday camps throughout the UK with duties ranging from adults’ and children’s entertainment to stewarding.


Undergoing a tough selection process, each Redcoat has to show customer services and guest-facing skills and can also showcase their singing and dancing expertise.


Nessie stills absolutely loves singing and entertaining and puts these skills to great use for our residents here at Alfriston Court, which she joined two years ago. One of her biggest aims, she says, is to keep the residents happy and Nessie organises events to keep everyone engaged and as fit as they can be.


Sallyann is a more recent addition to the activities team, but joins us with a mass of experience. We'll update you with her background just as soon as we have it all!
