Reviews

9.2 Woodlands has a Review Score of 9.2 (9.236)

The Review Score of 9.2 (maximum of 10) for Woodlands is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 21 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Woodlands in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.236 for Woodlands is calculated as follows: ( (100 Excellents x 5) + (115 Goods x 4) + (29 Satisfactorys x 3) + (6 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 250 Ratings = 4.236

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Woodlands is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 8 positive Reviews (40 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 19 Reviews ÷ 8 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

I'll start by saying my aunt chose and admitted herself into Woodlands of her own volition, as she had visited other residents. Her own view was reasonably positive; she said she was comfortable, reasonably well fed and above all, was "not fussed." However she never seemed happy and remained much of her own-her choice, I guess.

However, our experiences as relatives were not so sanguine. Firstly, the enquiries made into my aunt"s finances were little short of draconian and took a long time during which she paid at a higher rate. This was embarrassing and exasperating.

We thought it was all rather too "hands off" and we saw little evidence of real care. For example, my aunt waited a month for her pictures to be hung; in the end, we did it ourselves. When we visited no-one ever greeted us and the general atmosphere struck us as rather distant and unhelpful.

Lizzie Gurr, Communications Executive at Woodlands responded to this review on 22 Jan 2018:

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you feel this way about the service. As you know, moving to a care home is a big decision and it is our policy, as it is for many other care providers, to do an independent financial check to make sure our fees are affordable over the longer term. Personal financial details are kept confidential. We do this check, which usually only takes a few days, for the wellbeing of the resident, ensuring they can have continuous care.

We are a not for profit organisation, so we reinvest our annual surplus back into our properties to continue to improve our residents’ quality of life, this sets us apart from other commercial care providers.

We apologise that it took a while to get our handyman to hang your aunt’s pictures, and we will work to improve on this service. Settling residents into their new home is a priority and we want them to feel as homely as possible, which is why we encourage residents to bring their own furniture and furnishings.

We pride ourselves in delivering excellent customer service and friendliness and your feedback with regards to our staff and atmosphere at the home is something we rarely hear. Again, we apologise that this has been your experience and we would like to reassure you that Woodlands has a ‘good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission.

Although your aunt’s experience living with us was positive, we hope you accept our apologies for your experience and thank you again for your feedback.

This home on arriving has a good security procedure on entering and leaving the premises. It appears clean tidy and reasonably well maintained. There is a very full and varied social calendar. The staff are all friendly and welcoming but with never enough time to stop and chat, also it would be helpful to see a senior member of staff available to speak to.
The issues I have been made aware of are, choices of food at suppertime and arriving cold, lack of hot drinks particularly after supper when it is offered too late.
A big problem for my mother is lack of old-fashioned bed making skills.

Lizzie Gurr, Communications Executive at Woodlands responded to this review on 10 Jan 2018:

Thank you for your review, we welcome your feedback so we can learn where to improve areas of our service. The care home manager works during office hours so depending on the timing of your visits you may or may not see her. We schedule periodic meetings with relatives to share information and to jointly review our residents’ care plan and would be more than happy to arrange an ad hoc meeting with you to touch base if you would find this helpful. Residents receive a hot and cold choice of meal at supper time and we are looking to replace the trolley which keeps the food hot. All of our residents have the option of a hot drink after supper and we now make this offer earlier.

Residents have the option of having either a duvet or traditional sheets and blankets on their bed. We are planning on delivering bed making training to our staff so they can improve on traditional bed making skills. We are pleased to hear you find the home clean and tidy, with good security and a variety of social activities. Once again, thanks for your feedback and we look forward to meeting with you.

The staff are exceptional and incredibly patient with my Mum. It's a real comfort to know my Mum is in good hands and it has taken a lot of stress away knowing there's always someone on hand when she needs help. I can't thank the staff enough for all they do.

Outstanding care and environment, with all residents treated with the dignity they deserve. I was so pleased when Woodlands phoned to tell me there was a room available for my mother after the horrendous places I had visited in my search for a suitable home. Care of the elderly is a phase in everyone's life and I wish they could all experience Woodlands.

Thanks for your review.

When my parents first moved there we were very impressed with the services initially. However, over time the standards have gone down in quality, particularly since some of the original staff have left. Much of the new care staff do not appear to have the qualities necessary for a care home. The alarm does not always bring a carer quickly. Also, a lot of the meals provided, particularly the meat, is not of a good quality. The cake is all too often offered when a fruit option should be offered too. My father has often not finished his meal because it doesn't taste good or the meat is sub-standard.

Unfortunately, unless things change dramatically, I would not recommend this home.

Our chef has received much praise for his meals, so we are sorry your father has not enjoyed them. I look forward to discussing this with yourself and our chef in further detail at our meeting.

We are very aware of the amount of care Mum needs and the number of staff involved in the daily running of the home. We are always made welcome when we visit and it is lovely to see enthusiasm and good morale in the staff employed there. Thank you.

My brother is a rather private person and doesn't benefit from all the opportunities for social activity. However, the care home meets the high standards of his expectations. My wife and I enjoy visiting and having lunch with him and enjoy the welcome and helpful attitude of the staff. The building is light and airy and the outlook from his room is Ashdown Forest which is pleasant.

Thank you for taking the time to review Woodlands, we are glad your brother is happy there.

Looking after elderly patients with their deteriorating health, mobility and in severe cases, their mental health is a very demanding and often stressful task. I have been impressed over the last 22months, how well the staff at Woodlands have coped. They maintain a good level of cleanliness, supply excellent food and organise regular activities and entertainment. Getting to know patients individually with their specific needs and comforts, requires dedication and the staff make an effort to do this.

As for the location, Woodlands is nestled in a corpse of trees, far enough from the main road to enjoy the tranquillity. There is seating in the lawned area and a secure patio. One can relax on a sunny day watching the woodland wildlife. Care home costs are not cheap but Woodlands offers great value.

Thanks very much for your review Richard.

All one ever wants is to have happy parents. Sometimes we forget to say thank you to those who make it possible.

I want to thank all the staff at Woodlands for putting the smile back on my mother’s face. Despite her age and illnesses, I have rarely seen her in a better state of mind.

It is down to the hard work of everyone who puts so much into making Woodlands the place it is.

She is treated as part of one big happy family. Whereas my mother was lost and depressed and made to feel like a piece of furniture just to feed and keep clean in her two previous homes - I am so glad we persevered and finally found somewhere where she feels she has a value again.

I cannot recommend Woodlands highly enough.

My mother celebrated her 99th birthday today. The staff ensured she had the clothes on I requested. They all sang Happy Birthday on getting her up and after lunch, a beautiful cake was produced.
We had a lovely lunch with her. The staff here are caring and courteous to both residents and visitors. Everywhere is clean and smelling nice.
I have worked in a care home and appreciate the care they need. Manageable, approachable and helpful with any problems.

I have found the whole set-up at the Woodlands care home extremely acceptable.

The location, access and the general surroundings are perfect for my mother-in-law.
