My aunt was admitted to Burleys Wood for respite care in March 2020 and became a full-time resident just before the pandemic.
Most of her family live far way now and the care, support and advice given to us has been fantastic. It is also local enough for her friends to visit her regularly.
Team leaders
have become like extended family members and the care my Aunty receives is excellent.
She is happy, safe and has company; she has many activities to choose from and has her hair and nails done regularly, which she loves! The food is excellent and she is never without a cup of tea!
I recently spent quality time with her at the home and it was wonderful to experience all this for myself.
The recent addition of the Famileo App has enabled us to create a photographic gazette online and then is printed off by the home. Staff share quality time with Aunty getting to know her even more. A fantastic resource for individuals with dementia.
I would highly recommend Burleys Wood.
Reply from Erika Szalacsi, Home Manager at Burleys WoodThis is such a lovely review to read, thank you. We are so pleased to hear that your aunty is happy and safe with us here at Burleys Wood, our team really do go above and beyond for all of our residents to make sure they are simulated and supported. It is great to hear that you are regularly using the app as this is such a lovely resource to use and our residents love it. Thank you again for your kind review, it will be passed onto the rest of the wonderful team.

In general, care is very accommodating and attentive, but needs a bit more training.
Management is good.
Cleanliness? Depends on who cleans?
Needing updating of bedding and curtains.
And pay more attention to cleaning of the room and my husband's dentures are always in dirty water.
Reply from Erika Szalacsi, Home Manager at Burleys WoodThank you for raising these points; I will make sure this gets passed on and rectified. Anything else, please just ask.

I am the daughter-in-law of a resident, visited him many times with my mum and sister, as my experience. Staff are very nice and take care of my day, but need to do more extra attention to clean the room especially the floor sticky and need to clean his dentures, because most of the time are not clean
and my dad gets sick when it's dirty, must update bed as looks very old. Need to give every day my dad a shower. Thank you very much for the help.

My mother arrived in May 2022 and passed away in the care of Burleys Wood in May 2023. I cannot wholly express how wonderful, caring and compassionate the staff were to my mother. All of the staff, whatever their role was, were exceptional, and they made my mother very happy during the last year of
her life. The end-of-life care was truly exceptional - each member of staff showed love, compassion and understanding. They ensured that my mother had a very comfortable and peaceful end. We could not have asked for more at such a difficult time. A wonderful team.
Reply from Erika Szalacsi, Home Manager at Burleys WoodThank you for your kind words; it was a privilege to be able to care for your mother. The whole team gives their deepest condolences to you and your family.

My husband spent a short respite recently to enable me to have a break from full-time caring. The deputy manager and staff could not have been more welcoming and caring. They did their utmost to ensure he felt secure. All contact with the family and friends was welcomed and all staff willingly answered
our questions showing understanding and respect. I would be very happy for my husband to have a permanent placement, knowing that he would be well cared for.

Hello, everyone. This care home is absolutely 10-star. The care and professionalism that my mum has received is like having a new family. My mum has been a resident now since February and has settled in so well. She is happy and there is never a dull moment. The carers are extraordinary, they care 1000%,
I am so privileged and lucky to have Mum living here. My mum is well fed, cared for and her personal care has improved immensely since being here. She no longer has dizzy falls due to not eating or being dehydrated which can cause UTI's which are top of the list for her. The home itself is welcoming, super clean and feels like you are visiting your own family or friends. The ladies that assist my mum truly care and we are so fortunate. Whenever Mum wants to call me, she can. Mum is dressed well and seems the happiest she has been in months. All the management too and admin ladies update me on any news regarding doctor's visits etc. Well done, you are a great team.

Burleys Wood take great care of my mother. She was well looked after throughout the pandemic, Mum was isolated in her room when necessary e.g. after returning to the care home after a short visit to the hospital. I am kept well informed when Mum has had a fall, also spilling hot soup on her arm. Overall,
Mum is happy and she says she loves the food!

I find the cleanliness of the care home to be outstanding. The staff are very polite and helpful and there is always someone around if I have any questions. The furniture in the bedroom with lots of storage is well looked after and clean. The room en-suite provides all requirements. The nursing care
my wife is receiving is excellent. My wife has Alzheimer's but is coping very well in the nursing home.

The care my father received before passing on the 20th of March was fabulous. All staff treated him with dignity. My mother continues to be a resident at Burleys Wood and all staff have supported her through this difficult time. My sister and I have been kept up to date with all events and we were able
to spend a lot of time with our father in his last few days.

After a difficult start, not being able to visit initially during the covid lockdown, I have come to appreciate the care and compassion of the staff. I now believe that he wouldn't receive better care anywhere else and he seems as settled and happy as possible. Any difficulties have been through constant
changes and restrictions, brought on by covid requirements. I am amazed at how well the staff and admin have coped with the extra workload and how cheerful, friendly and helpful they all are. In short, very pleased. It is now my husband's home.

I wish I'd be writing this in happier circumstances, however, I'd like to extend my deepest thanks to those of Burley Wood for their love and compassion towards my mother. Everyone went above and beyond to ensure her remaining days were as comfortable and peaceful as possible. I'd furthermore like to
share how grateful we are as a family to all the staff who looked after her day to day. It was completely professional, however, incredibly personal. Thank you once again.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.565)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.565) out of 10 for Burleys Wood is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.665 for Burleys Wood is calculated as follows: ( (154 Excellents x 5) + (29 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 194 Ratings = 4.665
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Burleys Wood is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Emma

Emma Peachey

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2008

Emma became part of team Burleys when the doors first opened in 2008. She began by working as a night support worker, this fitted well around family life, over the years progressing to Team Leader and then in 2019 Emma was promoted to her current role of Deputy Manager.

Emma has worked in the care sector since leaving College at 17, working for 2 years in a privately-run nursing home in Reigate. Emma then worked for the London Borough of Sutton for 11 years in a specialist dementia home, only leaving when relocating with her young family to Crawley. Originally working for a domiciliary care company, providing support to service users in their own homes.

Emma really enjoys being able to make a difference every single day, supporting residents and staff. It is lovely to see the care staff support the residents with their independence and encouragement, always promoting new skills. Emma loves coming to work, she feels privileged to work in a place that is happy to be in, where the residents receive a high standard of care from an amazing staff team.

In total, Emma has worked for 26 years in the care sector but, has never worked throughout a health Pandemic until 2020 Emma commented: “I am very proud of the team who work here at Burleys Wood. Throughout the Pandemic, we have continued to provide high-quality care to our residents.

During very anxious times, we have pulled together and made sure the residents were always well looked after. We found some new ways of working and new ways of supporting each other - residents, relatives, staff and health professionals.”

Corah

Corah Clarke

Job Title: Nurse Joined: 2019

Having trained as a nurse 15 years ago, Corah joined the team at Burleys Wood in July 2019. She remembered, I chose nursing as my career because I love to care for those who cannot care for themselves, that’s my passion. Corah’s passion for care, meaning she very quickly fitted into the team at Burleys Wood.

When on shift, Corah manages the nursing floor making sure residents are safe and well cared for. Corah leads a team well and she also spends time each week speaking with local health professionals. Corah speaks with families to show support on a regular basis keeping them in the loop on their loved ones needs. Seeing a smile on a residents face makes everything worthwhile that’s when you know you are doing your job right.

The recent pandemic has taught Corah how important family is. Family is not just your immediate family but, the people you spend time with every day and the people you care for. When the residents’ families were missing physically, there were always phone calls, video calls, post cards, letters etc.

These simple but, physical interactions on a daily basis really helped residents feel less stressful during that time, they enjoy that. This is a good coping management during the pandemic and I am glad that I was a part of that. That too is a part of fulfilling my role. Anxiety can rise, however we pull through as a team.
