Harker House care home has been purpose built in the village of Long Stratton to provide residential care to 35 people over 65-years-old. The home includes a special secure unit for residents living with dementia.

Residents are invited to personalise their furnished room which also contains an emergency call bell system, fire alarm system and TV socket.

The home has adapted baths and showers, a payphone (although residents can choose to have a telephone point in their room), a hairdressing room and a secure garden.

The home prides itself on its friendly and welcoming environment and all residents have a key worker who works on the individual’s personal care plan, which is continuously reviewed so residents’ choices, interests and hobbies are all accounted for.

My father has been a resident in Harker House for several years. He has vascular dementia but has always been treated with good care, dignity and kindness.
He is not ambulant and cannot feed himself but staff are gentle and helpful. He looks well and is comfortable.
Any concerns are quickly sorted
by management. If ill a doctor or practice nurse are called. Good procedures are in place to keep family informed.
I cannot praise the care of most of the staff too highly.

I have stayed here for respite care. I made the decision to stay but my social worker wanted me to go home to give it a try. The home at Harker is a home. The staff have been so kind and allowed me to come out of my shell. The care I got was first class and the home and staff have supported my needs
so well. The food is top class. I have put on weight. This home is a home who cares.

My aunt has been looked after very well and regained her strength, however, I'm worried now she's home that will all be undone, even given all the care she will get. She has been well fed and has always looked clean and tidy, there's always been a tea trolly when I've visited so I know her fluid intake
has been good. Thank you to all who have cared for her.

I enjoy being here. I have lived here for over a year.
The care staff help me and have a laugh with me, which is important. I see the nurses for my legs, who are also lovely ladies. I enjoy being here and enjoy being with people and feeling included in activities.

My uncle lived at Harker House for almost five years and thought of it as home. He appreciated everything that was done to help him and enjoyed conversations with all the staff. A fall accelerated the end of his life, but the compassion of the staff while he waited for an ambulance, was second to none.

Since my mother moved into Harker House, she's been a different person. The carers keep her medications (of which there are quite a lot!) up to date very meticulously and her weight and diet are monitored well and they keep a close eye on her health and wellbeing. She has a delightful little bedroom
with her personal things around her and she appreciates the care and attention she receives from the staff and has made lots of friends since she's been there. I enjoy visiting her, and I'm always made welcome, the staff are always friendly and chatty, and the whole environment has a very clean, homely and cosy atmosphere.

My mother liked it there from the time she went in for respite and I am pleased to say it has not changed. The staff are very good and caring. I can find no fault with them or the place.

Whenever I went to visit my nan, the staff were very friendly and welcoming and my nan always seemed happy here. Not only did the staff care for my nan, they always had a good sense of humour which she loved and the high level of care she received in her last few weeks of life was fantastic and you
could feel how fond of her they all were.

Can't thank the staff enough for the kindness they showed to my mum, especially when she fell over. The manager and her deputy stayed with her until the ambulance arrived after such a long wait, but truly blessed mum was able to come back and spend her last days with everyone at Harker House.

My close friend lived at Harker House for three and a half years, she loved it and classed it as her home. The staff are what make the home and she classed them as her friends. She loved her music and staff always kept her entertained with music, singing, dancing and day trips out to the beach or shopping.
Towards the end, she wanted to return back "home" from hospital to spend her last few days and pass away with her friends (carers) and family around her. Staff did excellent end of life care and treated her with dignity, respect and person centred. I will miss going into Harker House to visit her and seeing all the smiles from the staff who do such a fantastic job. Harker House is beyond the best care home for caring staff I have ever had the privilege to visit.

I stayed at Harker House for 5 weeks while my home got decorated and carers put in place to look after me.
I was nervous about going into a care home at first but the home itself is smashing and the carers looked after me so well.
It's clean, bright and all the residents were lovely to me.
The food
was very good and if I wanted something, the nice cook made it for me.
I can't thank the staff enough for making my stay so welcoming.
The bingo was always a laugh with the funny carers calling out the numbers.

I have been here 3 weeks for respite, today I go home. The carers have looked after me very well, nothing is too much effort, the food is nice.
The home is clean and tidy, I am pleased to go back home to my cat but sad to leave this lovely place.
Maybe one day in the future I will be lucky enough
to come back.

My mother died this week after spending 2 years at care home. While there she was very happy, she loved the staff and they were excellent in their care. She was in hospital near the end but asked to go home, by that she meant care home. The carers used to sit with her while we took a break.

The home is so very welcoming. All the staff are so warm at heart and always have a smiling face upon arrival.

I have worked in care since 2007, starting off as a care assistant and progressing into my current position. I have experience of working in various care settings and my last role before joining the team at Harker Houser was as the Manager of a home providing dementia care.


I absolutely love how varied my days are and how rewarding it is to make a difference to residents’ lives by providing good quality, person centred care.
