Sadly it's often only the 'bad news' that people hear - when the truth is that, as you have found - a good care home (of which there are, thankfully, many) can provide a life enhancing experience to both residents and family members at a time which is often very stressful where families are being rushed into making such important decisions about something they (most often) know very little about. I'm sure that many people, perhaps just looking at care homes for the first time, will relate strongly to your experience and find your words very reassuring. My mum was admitted for respite care and from day one the staff and management have been so helpful and caring. I have visited on a number of occasions and the staff have always been polite and helpful to me giving me an update on how mum has been since my previous visit. I have also received many text updates from their management giving me regular updates on mum's health. Mum has joined in with many of the activities available and really enjoyed the singer that came in. Mum enjoys the food and there is always plenty of hot or cold drinks available. Facilities are good and they have a lovely big lounge where she talks with other residents something that she was unable to do at home and just watched TV. The care she is getting now is very relaxed and professional so much better than the day care she was getting before when they turned up late and couldn't get out quick enough. Hopefully the care package will change to a full time placement which would make me and my mum very happy.

After looking at so many care homes I knew the minute I walked into St Petroc's it was 'just like home'. The staff are always very caring to Mum and my family no matter how busy they are. The care home manager is always on hand to listen and explain Mum's care plan. There is a lot of fun and laughter during the activities which are chosen well and the chefs provide excellent food to Mum's tastes. Always a clean environment in all areas.

It's also lovely to read how the care team have been able to make your lives so much easier at what is, obviously, a very difficult time for you and your family. Feedback such as yours will be so important to other families who are going through similar experiences - thankfully, there are lots of good care homes out there (but always do your research as sadly there are also some not-so-good ones!) - it's really important that people get an understanding that a good care home cares not only for the resident but, indirectly, and just as importantly, for their family and friends who can be reassured that their loved one is happy and well looked after. It reads as though your decision came not as a result of a sudden and unexpected crisis (such as a fall or hospital stay) but as a considered decision taken in advance and seeking to avoid that crisis situation. Whilst we will always welcome and care for any new arrivals (and their families) to our very best abilities if it is our experience that your planned and considered approach often allows new residents to settle in very well and for families to be able to make important decisions whilst under less urgent time pressures.
