Rose Lodge Care Home offers specialist dementia care in Exmouth and has two small communities (around 16 residents in each) for people living with dementia.

The cottage is designed for people with early to mid-stage dementia and the lodge is designed for people with mid to late-stage dementia.

The two communities have a similar look and feel, to ease any moves between the communities. The home's design and decoration support independence and encourage active and sociable lives. Rose Lodge has generous terraces and gardens which residents are encouraged to use.

By having two communities on the same site, Rose Lodge ensure that residents live with people at a similar stage of dementia and this increases well-being and minimises friction between residents. Two activity programmes are tailored to the specific needs of each community.

Living an active and sociable life is essential to the resident's well-being. Activities at Rose Lodge include daily walks and trips in the minibus, weekly fitness classes, dancing, choir, music, arts and crafts, gardening and looking after pets which include a dog, cats, a rabbit, chickens, fish and doves. Residents' pets can usually be accommodated.

Rose Lodge received an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission in 2019, a gold award from Sterling University's Dementia Centre for the design of the cottage in 2016. Rose Lodge has been featured in the Journal of Dementia Care in April 2013 and Devon Life in 2017-2019.

The team at Rose Lodge know how difficult the decision can be to move to a care home. To ease this transition, they offer daycare where people can join the community for one or more days a week, befriend the residents, and join in the daily activity programme. Respite care is also offered, subject to room availability.

Rose Lodge has cared for my mother for almost three years. During that time she has received excellent care and sympathetic responses to her diminishing capabilities. They go out of their way to make life fun and interesting when memory loss reduces life to in the moment. She could not ne in a better
place.

Generally very good. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Standard of cleanliness excellent. Rose Lodge always smells fresh and clean. Hairdresser, chiropodist, optician and dentist available. Weekly entertainment, plus visits from outside animal and bird sanctuaries provide therapeutic benefits. Also
trips out in home's minibus are frequent and pleasurable for residents.

My partner settled really well at Rose Lodge after a stay in hospital. All the staff are fantastic - very friendly, caring and kind. The home is very homely, it has a lovely garden and the more able residents have regular trips out.

My wife has been attending weekly daycare at Rose Lodhge for around 18 months. She had moderate to advanced Alzheimer's and during her time at Rose Lodge, we have had nothing but praise for the care, support, and cognitive stimulation she has received. Rose Lodge is warm and welcoming and the staff
is thoroughly professional, kind, and caring. Home from home is the thought that comes to mind when I think of Rose Lodge and the benefits my wife gains from her weekly visits are priceless. I couldn't thank Rose Lodge enough for the care they give her.

Rose Lodge is a fantastic place. My Dad has been there for many years now. They are great for looking after people with dementia. They have always had a lot of things going on, from animals coming to visit to people coming to sing. This week they had a local school visiting.

My dad has been cared for at Rose Lodge for nearly 2 years. He has advanced Alzheimer's.
He is treated with dignity, love, and respect.
I cannot speak highly enough of the exemplary care he receives. I could not ask for better care in his own home.
The meals are delicious and all home-cooked. Entertainment
is wide-ranging and daily. A wonderful care home.

Rose Lodge is a warm and welcoming home from home. Mum came first as a day visitor to give us respite and enjoyed helping to wash up and cheer up other residents. She is now in The Lodge and is always well dressed and looks content. The food is lovely and nutritious. The staff are friendly and attentive.
Thank you to all.

The team welcomed my Mother who transferred in from another county and have made her feel part of the community, settling her in and making her feel very at home. It came after she had a fall so there was a bit of disposition for my Mum which she has been able to successfully navigate with the support
of the Rose Lodge staff.
I haven't seen my Mum so engaged in her surroundings when in hospital for a number of years only confirming it was the right decision for her to be in such a supported, caring social environment.

My Dad moved to Rose Lodge after we were told that the care home he was in could 'no longer meet his needs.'. While horribly stressful at the time, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he is so much happier at Rose Lodge. An atmosphere of warmth and kindness permeates the place. Residents are
treated as individuals, and every effort is made to stimulate and entertain, as well as look after physical needs. It honestly feels like a home from home and our family is so grateful that Dad is settled and happy there. He couldn't be in a better place.
Reply from Andrea Luxton-Keough, Manager at Rose LodgeThank you for your wonderful review. We are so happy that your dad is settled and happy, he certainly is part of the family at Rose Lodge!

Very kind and caring. Nice range of activities but what really makes Rose Lodge stand out is the level of personalised care and kindness. The only difficulty is that the phone system is very poor. Calls to Rose Lodge are frequently interrupted through a poor signal that never seems to be fixed.

More than one year on I still believe my mother is in the right place for her. Access to the outside and opportunities to venture further are very important to her, as are caring, friendly staff, ready to have a joke, and stimulating activities along with time sitting in the sun with a friend. There
is always a welcoming homely atmosphere, and I am reassured that staff have Mum's wellbeing in mind.

I cannot thank all the staff at Rose Lodge enough for all the personal and emotional care Mum received during her stay as a resident in the cottage. All her care was delivered with total compassion, dignity and love. Sadly Mum passed at the beginning of June, our experience of all the staff's attention
to Mum's changing needs was with the utmost professionalism and care. Nothing was too much trouble to help care for Mum, be it equipment, extra care or advice from healthcare professionals. As a family, we could visit at any time and were always welcomed with friendly faces, offered drinks, food and time to talk. Social outings, animal and music therapies, cooking, crafts and keep-fit sessions all greatly contributed to Mum's engagement and enjoy her last few months. Having her hair and nails looked after weekly was so important to her well-being. Rose Lodge family provided all these wonderful experiences that we would not been able to at home. Thank you Rose Lodge for caring for our mum and for the compassion and love you showed us at the end.

My wife has been a resident for seven years and I have been visiting regularly for the last seven years. I have been most thankful for the fact that during all that time and despite many changes of staff she has nearly always been happy to be in Rose Lodge. I have been particularly stuck by how staff
at all levels have always been so welcoming to me and more importantly been so caring and friendly towards my wife.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.805)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.805) out of 10 for Rose Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 40 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 40 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.805 for Rose Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (388 Excellents x 5) + (87 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 478 Ratings = 4.805
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Rose Lodge is based on 40 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8, which has been reached with 40 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
