Rose Lodge Care Home offers specialist dementia care in Exmouth and has two small communities (around 16 residents in each) for people living with dementia.

The cottage is designed for people with early to mid-stage dementia and the lodge is designed for people with mid to late-stage dementia.

The two communities have a similar look and feel, to ease any moves between the communities. The home's design and decoration support independence and encourage active and sociable lives. Rose Lodge has generous terraces and gardens which residents are encouraged to use.

By having two communities on the same site, Rose Lodge ensure that residents live with people at a similar stage of dementia and this increases well-being and minimises friction between residents. Two activity programmes are tailored to the specific needs of each community.

Living an active and sociable life is essential to the resident's well-being. Activities at Rose Lodge include daily walks and trips in the minibus, weekly fitness classes, dancing, choir, music, arts and crafts, gardening and looking after pets which include a dog, cats, a rabbit, chickens, fish and doves. Residents' pets can usually be accommodated.

Rose Lodge received an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission in 2019, a gold award from Sterling University's Dementia Centre for the design of the cottage in 2016. Rose Lodge has been featured in the Journal of Dementia Care in April 2013 and Devon Life in 2017-2019.

The team at Rose Lodge know how difficult the decision can be to move to a care home. To ease this transition, they offer daycare where people can join the community for one or more days a week, befriend the residents, and join in the daily activity programme. Respite care is also offered, subject to room availability.

I have been very impressed with all aspects of care that my mother has received at Rose Lodge. The management team were extremely helpful and reassuring when we were arranging mums move into the home. Rose Lodge has a lovely vibrant yet homely atmosphere and I am confident in the care that my mum receives.
I would be happy to recommend Rose Lodge and all the lovely team that works here to anyone looking for a care home.
Reply from Andrea Luxton-Keough, Manager at Rose LodgeThank you for your kind comments. We are so pleased that your mum has settled in well with us, the team work so hard to create our lovely, homely atmosphere and we are very pleased that you are so happy.

My dad is in the advanced stages of Alzheimers and was in a very poor state of physical and mental health when he arrived at Rose Lodge some eighteen months ago. The improvement we saw in him within days of his arrival was quite incredible. This is down to the outstanding staff that were there. They
are genuinely caring and kind and are always so calm and professional in all situations. All my family agree when we say "he couldn't be in a better place" - Thank you.
Reply from Andrea Luxton-Keough, Manager at Rose LodgeIt is an absolute pleasure to see the difference that was made to your dad when he came to live at Rose Lodge and was given the quality of life he deserves.

They do a fantastic job at Roselodge looking after my father. He has his own room and also can mix with others throughout the day if he wishes. There is always something going on in Rose Lodge ie games, music, TV, and people coming in to visit them.

Rose Lodge is a very good care home our mother has lived there for over 5 1/2 years now and many of the staff are still familiar, friendly, reassuring and kind faces. Mum has dementia and can be inclined to be self-isolating but she is encouraged to be a part of everyday life in a kind and caring environment.
It is a home from home and we feel fortunate to have it on our doorstep.

Rose Lodge remains an excellent care home for my aunt. I am forever impressed with the large number of staff to residents ratio. There are no negatives and the all-inclusive monthly fees make it very well priced too.

Rose Lodge came highly recommended and it certainly has not disappointed. My mum has been a resident for nearly 3 years and her dementia journey has not been an easy one. However, the management and staff have been exemplary in looking after her and attending to her care needs every step of the way.
Now that she is in the latter stages of dementia, the staff also have my well-being and my siblings at heart. They keep me fully up to date on mum's health condition and recently provided me with facilities that allowed me to stay the night with mum when it was necessary.
Mum is still always included in many of the varied activities where possible that the home provides, and her food is freshly cooked to suit her dietary requirements.
Having to put a loved one into a care home is never an easy task. However, I will always be truly grateful for the day I got the call offering mum a room. Nothing really is too much for the staff and family values are very much the essence of Rose Lodge.
Reply from Andrea Luxton-Keough, Manager at Rose LodgeThank you for your lovely comments. It makes the Rose Lodge family very proud of what we do and why we do it. Kind, caring home. Clean and friendly. The only worries are that mother's carers either forget to put in her hearing aids regularly or put in her hearing aids without checking that the batteries work, which leaves her virtually deaf. She also does not like the food otherwise care is exemplary. Staff
are delightful, a joy.

The time came for my husband to move into care and I could not have found a better place than Rose Lodge. The care he receives is excellent. The staff are cheerful and patient and interested in him as an individual which makes Rose Lodge a happy place. They encourage him to join in the many varied activities
and go the extra mile to celebrate special occasions. I also appreciate the care taken to keep everyone covid free and visiting is pleasant in his spacious room.

My relative has been taken care of at Rose Lodge for over 5 years now, and I am satisfied with the level of care that she has been given. Staff keep me regularly informed of her health and any issues with it. She really enjoys the food, which is always freshly cooked.
The staff are gentle and caring
and that has been a particular comfort to me during the last year when travelling restrictions and social distancing has made it difficult to visit her. As a relative, who has little experience of dementia, the staff have been very supportive to me in explaining the condition, and all that goes with it.
In the early days of my relative's time at the home, she really enjoyed the day trips to the beach, when she could walk along the promenade with some of the other residents. Her room is clean, light and airy, and she has privacy; the day rooms are pleasant, and the garden is lovely and big enough to cater for many of the residents at the same time; there is also shade available if needed.

Even during the last very worrying twelve months, Rose Lodge has consistently maintained an excellent standard of care, putting into place all anti-infection methods for Covid-19 and continuing to offer its residents a varied programme of entertainment. I couldn't have asked for better care for my mum
and feel lucky to have her reside at Rose Lodge.

My sister and I looked at several homes before selecting Rose Lodge. Mum is very happy at Rose Lodge; the staff are brilliant. Mum has a lovely room, and having her own ensuite shower has a very important factor for a very private lady. Mums condition will deteriorate, but we are happy to keep her in
Rose Lodge for the remainder of her life.

Also, your confidence in this continuing for the remaining time your mum has left is lovely to hear. Thanks again.

My wife has been a resident in Rose Lodge for nearly four years. She suffers from Alzheimer's, but within the constraints that this imposes on her, she is very happy and until recently, had remained able to take part in the excellent activities provided. The staff are well-trained, caring and efficient;
they are easy to communicate with. Food is excellent and medical attention well looked after. As a visitor, I am always welcomed, and I am happy that I am able to have full confidence in the way my wife is being looked after.

Rose Lodge is without a doubt a fabulous care home for those with dementia. We had experienced the nightmare homes prior to mum being offered a place here and what a relief it was, 6 months on and the leadership, care and compassion shown to my mother has been without fault. Leadership respond promptly
to any queries and carers always keep the family informed and involved. Carers are always focused on the residents tailoring a wide range of activities to suit and, above all, creating a loving family community.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.792)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.792) out of 10 for Rose Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 37 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 37 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.792 for Rose Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (353 Excellents x 5) + (86 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 442 Ratings = 4.792
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Rose Lodge is based on 37 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8, which has been reached with 37 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
