Rose Lodge Care Home offers specialist dementia care in Exmouth and has two small communities (around 16 residents in each) for people living with dementia.

The cottage is designed for people with early to mid-stage dementia and the lodge is designed for people with mid to late-stage dementia.

The two communities have a similar look and feel, to ease any moves between the communities. The home's design and decoration support independence and encourage active and sociable lives. Rose Lodge has generous terraces and gardens which residents are encouraged to use.

By having two communities on the same site, Rose Lodge ensure that residents live with people at a similar stage of dementia and this increases well-being and minimises friction between residents. Two activity programmes are tailored to the specific needs of each community.

Living an active and sociable life is essential to the resident's well-being. Activities at Rose Lodge include daily walks and trips in the minibus, weekly fitness classes, dancing, choir, music, arts and crafts, gardening and looking after pets which include a dog, cats, a rabbit, chickens, fish and doves. Residents' pets can usually be accommodated.

Rose Lodge received an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission in 2019, a gold award from Sterling University's Dementia Centre for the design of the cottage in 2016. Rose Lodge has been featured in the Journal of Dementia Care in April 2013 and Devon Life in 2017-2019.

The team at Rose Lodge know how difficult the decision can be to move to a care home. To ease this transition, they offer daycare where people can join the community for one or more days a week, befriend the residents, and join in the daily activity programme. Respite care is also offered, subject to room availability.

My relative has been taken care of at Rose Lodge for over 5 years now, and I am satisfied with the level of care that she has been given. Staff keep me regularly informed of her health and any issues with it. She really enjoys the food, which is always freshly cooked.
The staff are gentle and caring
and that has been a particular comfort to me during the last year when travelling restrictions and social distancing has made it difficult to visit her. As a relative, who has little experience of dementia, the staff have been very supportive to me in explaining the condition, and all that goes with it.
In the early days of my relative's time at the home, she really enjoyed the day trips to the beach, when she could walk along the promenade with some of the other residents. Her room is clean, light and airy, and she has privacy; the day rooms are pleasant, and the garden is lovely and big enough to cater for many of the residents at the same time; there is also shade available if needed.

Even during the last very worrying twelve months, Rose Lodge has consistently maintained an excellent standard of care, putting into place all anti-infection methods for Covid-19 and continuing to offer its residents a varied programme of entertainment. I couldn't have asked for better care for my mum
and feel lucky to have her reside at Rose Lodge.

My Aunt has been more than well cared for by Rose Lodge for now over three years. She is very happy there and regards it as her home. The most impressive aspect that I see on my visits is the high ratio of caring staff to residents. There are also always activities going on.

My sister and I looked at several homes before selecting Rose Lodge. Mum is very happy at Rose Lodge; the staff are brilliant. Mum has a lovely room, and having her own ensuite shower has a very important factor for a very private lady. Mums condition will deteriorate, but we are happy to keep her in

My wife has been a resident in Rose Lodge for nearly four years. She suffers from Alzheimer's, but within the constraints that this imposes on her, she is very happy and until recently, had remained able to take part in the excellent activities provided. The staff are well-trained, caring and efficient;
they are easy to communicate with. Food is excellent and medical attention well looked after. As a visitor, I am always welcomed, and I am happy that I am able to have full confidence in the way my wife is being looked after.

This has always been a fantastic place, but their management during the current situation has been amazing. I have just returned from a lovely visit with Mum in their special 'gazebo', she is well, happy and keeps occupied. I am so pleased we found Rose Lodge and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Rose Lodge is without a doubt a fabulous care home for those with dementia. We had experienced the nightmare homes prior to mum being offered a place here and what a relief it was, 6 months on and the leadership, care and compassion shown to my mother has been without fault. Leadership respond promptly
to any queries and carers always keep the family informed and involved. Carers are always focused on the residents tailoring a wide range of activities to suit and, above all, creating a loving family community.

Before Covid-19 I was able to visit regularly. The staff are kind and caring, food good, like school dinners which is why my husband loves it, (not meant in a derogatory way).
His room is lovely with access to a very beautiful garden. There are animals, pets, plants, a pond, it's lovely. Now it's Covid-19,
I can't see him. I call him every day and the staff are always kind and informative as to his health and general wellbeing. They are brilliant and tolerant. I am video calling now and they always accommodate this with pleasure.

My sister posted a review here three years ago, and our mother is still living in The Cottage. She had been in three other care homes prior to arriving here, and we were beginning to despair. We are so grateful to have found Rose Lodge. Mum is not a joiner-in, preferring to keep to herself, reading
books and knitting. However, she is encouraged to get up and out of her room every day, and sits contentedly in her favoured chair, from where she can watch the comings and goings of everyone else. She is not, therefore, isolated but included as part of The Cottage family as far as she is willing to be. She is regularly engaged by staff as they go about their business, calling out to her by name, offering her cups of tea, (just how she likes it) and they also ensure she gets one-to-one time, as with all residents. Everyone who works there does a marvellous job, so that we feel very confident about her well-being at all times, and can see the evidence when we visit. It is a calm and welcoming place.

Overall I find Rose Lodge to be an excellent care home. The staff are very caring and make a lot of effort to keep the residents involved.
No care facility is perfect but my opinion is that Rose Lodge has the right balance for the resident's needs and I would recommend it.

Rose Lodge is such a warm welcoming place with amazing staff. Every member of staff is friendly, compassionate, genuine and caring. My husband has now been a resident since June 2019 and prior to that a Day Care service user for a year. The care he has received is outstanding. He is kept stimulated with all the wonderful activities and outings. Everything is well thought out and geared towards giving people with dementia a rewarding
purposeful life. Handing the care of a loved one over to others is an act of trust and one hopes that that person will be cared for properly and you take for granted that carers will always do what is best for them. Rose Lodge do! Everyone from the laundry ladies who work very hard keeping residents in beautifully laundered clothes, to the cleaners who keep everywhere smelling clean and fresh deserves praise. We are so grateful to the manager who is like a breath of fresh air, the driver who has shown kindness beyond the call of duty, the member of staff who responds to queries quickly and efficiently and to all of the wonderful caring staff, we as a family sent our heartfelt thanks.

I'm just back from the Boogie Woogie singing experience, professional interactive entertainment provided for all the residents and their families/friends of both the cottage and the lodge. We've all been singing and waving union jacks as well as enjoying a drink in a relaxed happy atmosphere. Brilliant

Andrea Luxton-Keough

Andrea lives in Exmouth, she has over 20 years of experience supporting people who are living with dementia.


Andrea has a BSc Hons Degree in Dementia Studies and an RMA L4. In 2019, Andrea completed an eight-day course in Birmingham with Meaningful Care Matters in the planning, design and facilitation of Dementia Care Learning and The Butterfly Project.


Andrea believes that each person has the right to live well, and this happens by putting their emotional needs at the centre of what Rose lodge does.


The people who live in our communities are our family; together we celebrate life, embracing the potential of the here and now, the beauty of the moment and sharing the daily ebb and flow of life.

Tracey has worked at Rose Lodge since 2015. She began her journey as care for the Cottage community and has worked her way up to taking over as Registered Manager in 2021. Tracey has a Level 5 in Leadership in Health and Social Care Management and completed an eight-day course in Birmingham with Meaningful Care Matters in the planning, design and facilitation of Dementia Care Learning.


Tracey shares the same passion and beliefs as Andrea. She believes that everyone has the need to feel loved, valued, and heard and to have a reason to get up in the morning.


In each community, Tracey leads the team in living and working together. There are no barriers, no uniforms, drug trollies, routines or anything that creates a divide between us and our family members.
