Overview

The Review Score of 8.4 (maximum of 10) for Kent House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 21 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Kent House Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.308 for Kent House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (115 Excellents x 5) + (100 Goods x 4) + (32 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 250 Ratings = 4.308

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.056 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kent House Care Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 3.5

    2. Target of 5.4 positive Reviews (27 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 3 Reviews ÷ 5.4 Target = 0.556

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

8.4 Kent House Care Home has a Review Score of 8.4 (8.364) from 21 Reviews

My mother has been a resident of Kent House for nearly 2 years and I am constantly amazed at the very high quality of care given by all the staff. All the staff treat her with unfailing patience and kindness, far beyond what could reasonably be expected.
Despite plenty of encouragement to participate in the many activities, mum often chooses to spend most of the time in her room, staff are instantly alerted by the bell system if she leaves her room.
We are able to call in at any time, without an appointment, which is most helpful. Someone always comes to tell me how she has been since my last visit, without being asked. The manager is excellent, always professional, yet friendly, approachable and helpful.
My family and I are extremely pleased with the services my mother receives from all the staff at Kent House. It is a great relief to us that we have found somewhere as wonderful for my mother to get the care she needs.

Nathan Stone, Director at Kent House Care Home responded to this review on 09 Apr 2018:

Thank you Sheila for leaving what is a fantastic review of the experience that you, your family and your mum have had and continue to enjoy, of our Kent House Care Team and Care Home in Okehampton over the past 2 years.
It's always really nice to receive reviews such as these - not least as it provides welcome public recognition of the amazing job that our care teams do day in and day out at our care homes, on this occasion, that care home being Kent House. It's also great for people who may suddenly find themselves researching care homes (a subject about which most people know very little and often suddenly have to become experts) to be able to learn of the positive experiences of people already living in one. Again, thank you for posting such a great and detailed review, we often get reviews that say 'It's great here' (and we're very grateful for those of course) - yours goes that bit further and explains why - and, as we've always known, the reason why is always down to the hard work and caring of our care team members.

This is the first Christmas my mother has been in residential care. I was very pleased with the amount of activities leading up to Christmas.

Every month we receive information and photos of the residents' activities. I am very pleased with her care as she can be difficult.

Julie Smith, Manager at Kent House Care Home responded to this review on 24 Jul 2017:

This is very kind and always good to know.

My mother has been a resident at Kent House for 2 years and feels safe and secure.
She is physically reasonably able and mentally fully capable and the staff encourage her to be independent and to go out into the town.
Visitors are always made welcome and the staff are kind and caring.
Kent House enables my mother to remain in the local community.

Having the same carer/carers is a very good idea, almost like a one to one as carers and the residents become used to each other. Spending less time in their room if possible. My experience on the whole, is a good one. I am always kept informed of any illness, change of meds etc and wellbeing.

Nathan Stone, Director at Kent House Care Home responded to this review on 21 Mar 2017:

Good morning SH - Many thanks for taking the time to write and publish this review of your experiences at our Kent House Care Home in Okehampton. It's great that your mum is settling in well and getting involved in the activities in the home. We have a great Care Team at Kent House, ably led by the manager and her deputy and it's nice to see them receiving public feedback such as this. Kindest regards, Nathan.

Generally, the home has a good atmosphere with personal care, help and also a named carer - so having a point of contact for the family. The majority of the time there appears to be encouragement with diet and fluids but they can stay in their rooms for days. Whilst I understand not everyone wants to socialise, mobilising in the home or a bit of fresh air would be good.

Nathan Stone, Director. at Kent House Care Home responded to this review on 21 Mar 2017:

Good morning MW - Thank you for taking the time to write and publish this review of your experiences with our Kent House Care Home in Okehampton. Whilst it's great to see that you would recommend the home we've also noted your feedback with regards to activities and cleanliness and will speak to the manager about this. I can offer that with regards to activities that Kent House does have a full schedule or internal, external and community-based activities that are focused on groups and individuals. Our residents social lives and involvement forms a significant aspect of their overall care packages and, as you say, some (for a variety of different reasons, from unable to unwilling) will not wish to take part in the communal ones - in which case we ensure people spend time with them in their rooms etc as per their wishes. The Registered Manager, holds regular resident and relative/friend meetings at Kent House and any suggestions such as yours would be great to be discussed as such meetings (or at any time with her as she will always be happy to meet with you). I hope this helps with a bit more information on the topics that you have raised. Kindest regards, Nathan.

My husband has been at Kent House since November as overall I am happy with the care given. However, in my opinion, re safety/security there is not enough staff to cope with 25 residents! The needs of care vary but due to dementia residents need one to one care very often. Dementia is a demanding illness and the staff at Kent House do a very good job indeed.

Since mums admittance to Kent House, I have always found her to have been well cared for. Always clean, tidy and dressed in her own clothes. During the last visit, I witnessed a carer feed mum her lunch which took an hour allowing mum time to digest her food without being rushed. I always drop in as and when and mum will always be either in the lounge or conservatory fully dressed and clean and not been left alone in her room.

Mother was moved to this care home out of necessity and recommendation. The care is good and the staff always helpful. The only down side is that we were disappointed at the inaccessibility of the room, which makes it very difficult for mum.

Since arriving at Kent House I have been very satisfied with the level of care given to my mother. The staff always do all they can for the residents and their families. Have always found the home and my mother's room clean and well kept. The level of food is very good and the staff have the time to help feed the less able residents. Have become involved with the activity sessions with the residents although my mother doesn't take a large part in these nowadays.

Thank you for such kind words.

I am quite happy with all I have seen except one thing. I think the personal washing could be improved on. I think perhaps a shower should be provided for those that are able to use one.

Mum made the decision to move to residential care in April 2015. Fortunately Kent House had a suitable vacancy at that time. We cannot fault the care and kindness mum has been shown, it feels like a home from home and the staff are superb. Nothing is ever too much trouble and we, her family, feel confident and reassured that mum is treated with dignity and respect. The manager employs an open door policy, so we know it is possible to talk through any concerns in an informal but professional way.

I think Kent House is a very caring and nurturing establishment for older people; their compassion towards those who suffer from dementia is quite heart-warming. Nothing appears to be too much trouble for the staff who have responded positively to any and all comments I have made in connection with the health and emotional state of my relative.
