Mum is coming up to her second anniversary at Southlands. We initially booked a two-week trial visit for her after a poor experience at her previous home, but by day 3 she had decided this was where she wanted to be. The facilities and catering are great and the staff are professional, really friendly and caring. The whole building is clean and well cared for and feels like a kind and nurturing place to live. Mum loves it. She is usually to be found holding court with her friends in the conservatory, usually with much laughter and banter, or quietly painting/drawing in her room. It's been great seeing her getting back into her art which she'd always loved but had lost the spark for before moving to Southlands. She's had a couple of medical issues but the staff are really on the ball and are all over such events. Calming and reassuring for the patient and providing regular updates to the family. Great care and support!

Fabulous staff and home from home for mum at a time she could not stay in her own home. The care given was amazing, empathetic and caring. It was a comfort to the family to know mum was safe and being cared for. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the staff and they always treated mum with care and respect.

My dear mum went into Southlands about six months ago when she was 96 years old. I can only say how wonderful the Management and ALL the staff are. I was apprehensive when mum first went into care after I had been looking after her for many years myself. I soon discovered how very lucky we as a family were to have them caring for mum, until sadly she passed away. The home is beautifully furnished, in a lovely location, and the staff are all very kind and genuinely care for the residents. They are amazingly supportive to not only the residents , but also we as family members. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all the lovely people who made my mothers stay there so positive.

Reply from Carol McCarthy, Area Manager at Southlands Residential Care Home

Thank you so much, Susan, for sharing your experience. We are truly honoured to have cared for your mum and are so glad that our team could provide comfort, support, and kindness to both her and your family. Your heartfelt words mean a great deal to us, and we will always remember your mum fondly.

My mother in law was a resident at Southlands for 6 months until she recently passed away. I always found the whole team at the home were extremely helpful and approachable whenever I spoke to them, The home itself was always kept spotlessly clean, and is in a lovely location. I can only conclude this review by saying a very big thank you for the support and kindness shown to my wife and I during this difficult time.

We all want the best for our loved ones. Southlands was the best Care Home I found for my mother, and she has lived here for around 3 years now. It takes time to adjust to a new environment, but from the start the staff were all very kind and thoughtful and made her feel at home. There is always a homely, friendly, jovial atmosphere, a real home from home. The staff are wonderful and take the time to chat with her, and are genuinely interested. It's not just a job, you can just tell they really do care. I can't speak highly enough of them, they are true diamonds! They are always very welcoming, respectful and caring to both residents and visitors alike. It's a pleasure visiting and a real comfort knowing that my mother is in safe hands. There are plenty of activities laid on, and time to socialise with others, or simply spend time in her lovely room overlooking the patio and garden. The home is lovely, bright, clean and airy. My mother is happy here and that's a real comfort to me.

My mum spent her last two and half years at Southlands and received the most wonderful care. She was becoming ill and immobile when she had to go into care and her health was declining rapidly. The staff were amazing and incredibly caring, always kept the family informed, and we were so lucky to find Southlands. Mum became bedbound in the last months of her life and needed intensive nursing for several months before she died. The staff were incredible. I cannot speak highly enough of both the staff and the home in general and thank them with all my heart for making Mums last days as comfortable as possible.

My Mother lived at Southlands for 3 Years. It is the nicest care home I have ever visited.
The home is really friendly and the residents rooms are homely, they can have their own possesions around them.
The staff go above and beyond, they really care about the residents and I always felt that my Mum was loved
by the way the staff spoke to her and spent time with her. I never had any worries about the care that she was recieving. There are always activities organised for the residents who want to join in. Visitors are made to feel welcome and can visit at most times of the day.

I am very grateful for the care that my Mum recieved. Thank you Southlands.

My Mother was in Southlands for over 2 and a half years. All the carers loved her. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they really care about the residents. They look after the residents so well. The carers are all so lovely that they became friends.
The home is always so clean, fresh, bright and airy. It has lovely bedrooms, a big bright conservatory to have their many activities in, a spacious dining room and a lovely cosy lounge to watch TV in, or just socialise. They also have a beautiful garden and a lovely decking area for sitting out in the sun.
I never joined them for lunch but the food always looked amazing and smelled divine.

Sadly my Mother passed away not long ago and we will miss her terribly but we will also miss all the staff at Southlands very much too, and I want to thank them all for caring for Mum so well. I can't praise them enough.

My stepfather lived at Southlands for 14 months. During that time I found the staff to be friendly and welcoming to both the residents and their visitors. The good care of the residents was apparent with a personal, very caring approach towards them.
The management always took the time to have a chat and keep us up to date with how our stepfather was either in person or over the phone.
Southlands was always clean and the decor updated.

If I needed a care home for another family member I would choose Southlands again.

In March 2025, I needed to find a care home in the area with some urgency so my cousin could move from another county to be near to me. From the first contact with the manager & deputy manager at Southlands Care Home, Newton Abbot, my cousin and I have been treated with care and respect. For the month she stayed until her death, my cousin received excellent care, with every attention to her wishes. I cannot speak highly enough of the cleanliness, quality of food, range of activities, and the medical/palliative care provided. She was treated with dignity at all times in a safe, supportive environment as her health declined. The compassion shown to me by all the staff on her death has been touching. Thank you!

Our cousin spent the last years of her life at Southlands.
The care she received through out was excellent from all members of staff who met all her needs.
Constant feedback from the home with suggestions, on how to help our cousin with her learning difficulties and advanced dementia.
With her decline over time, needing more care on a one to one basis this was meet by all staff.
Our cousin died at Southlands. The care she received to the very end was to a very high standard going well above what was expected.
It was a great comfort to us knowing she was well looked after treated with respect and loved.

We can't thank everyone enough.

My father has been living at Southlands Residential Care Home for several years and we have always found all the staff and management team to be friendly, very helpful and caring.
The building is kept well maintained, with several improvements to the outside area, making a very pleasant summer house and decking area, from where the residents can enjoy the beautiful garden.

Dad's room is spacious, bright and always kept clean and tidy. I would have no reservation about recommending Southlands to anyone.

Our cousin has been resident at Southlands Residential Care Home for three years. During this time her care needs have increased and she has become non-verbal.
The home Manager sets high standards of care, compassion, dignity and respect. The staff take time to get to know the residents and have found ways to communicate with our cousin which makes her smile. She also enjoys being included in the activities although she is unable to join in.
Menu choices are provided for the lovely home cooked meals. A selection of drinks is available which staff encourage / assist residents to take if needed. The environment is clean and well maintained. Visitors are always made to feel welcome.

We are so grateful for the care given to our cousin and cannot recommend Southlands highly enough.

My mum has been a resident at Southlands Residential Care Home for almost 4 years due to mobility issues. She had previously spent some time here after recuperating from a fractured ankle and loved it. The staff are all lovely, very friendly and welcoming and they take great care of mum. She has a lovely room which is clean and well maintained. There are always different activities available for the residents to join in with and quite often singers, musicians and local school children come to visit, mum really enjoys these social activities.
