My mum has been a resident of Southlands for 18 months and she loves it.
The staff are kind, caring and always cheerful.
Communication is easy and the staff are all friendly and approachable.
For example, when mum had a fall recently, I received a phone call to let me know and explain what they
are doing to give her extra support.
There are activities morning and afternoon each day which mum loves to take part in. There are regular exercise classes, crafts, cooking, quizzes and visits from local school children. Mum really loves the trips out, either for a drive or to visit a local place of interest.
I love the imagination of the staff, providing such a wide range of engaging activities to keep the residents entertained and stimulated.
Southlands send out a questionnaire at regular intervals. I always report how happy mum is!
If I have ever mentioned anything as an area for development, it has been addressed quickly.
I can't speak highly enough of Southlands.

Mum moved to Southlands two years ago. She had been adamant that she would never go into a Home, thinking it would be like the ones she had experienced with many years ago when visiting an elderly aunt in the 1970s. She had little choice as she was very poorly, and the assisted living accommodation
she had been in for a number of years (with visiting carers three times a day) simply couldn't cope and made clear when she was in the hospital that she needed full-time care.
From the very beginning, Mum was made to feel genuinely welcome, and the care she received has been superb. This was during a period of lockdown because of Covid restrictions, so I was unable to see her for at least three weeks. When I did, she was already looking better and continued to become healthier than she had been for years. Not only is the care first class but so too are the facilities and activities. Communication with the home is easy, and I get regular updates of Mum's care package suitability.

Mum spent her last two and a half years at Southlands and couldn't have been more content. She particularly loved her room and the staff and never had any complaints. She made many friends there and her happiness gave myself and the family such peace of mind in her final years. From Mum's remarks in
her final months, I have good reason to believe that the ethos of the previous wonderful owner still pervades the home.

Mum has been living in Southlands now for 18 months, and during that time, she has received nothing more than excellent care on every front. The nursing staff have always shown her the greatest respect on every occasion and given her extra support when she has been at a low ebb. If I could make one
suggestion, please bring back "Facebook" - a lifeline for family and friends living away.

Our dear mum was at Southlands from November 2019 to when she sadly passed away earlier this week. We have nothing but praise for the dedication, kindness and care shown to Mum by absolutely all the staff. The home is well cared for and beautifully maintained. They always organise many activities and
genuinely care about their well-being. When Mum was in her last days, they were gentle, kind and caring.

My father was a resident of Southlands for three years until his death in February 2023. Throughout that time, his care was excellent. The staff were always lovely, calm and patient. As he approached the end of his life, they all stepped up a gear in their care and compassion, which allowed for a dignified
death.

My Mother lived at Southlands RCH for nearly 5 years and I can honestly say that in my experience as a palliative care nurse visiting other care homes, Southlands shines out as a beacon of happiness, safety, kindness and exceptional care. Mum was very unwell when she moved to Southlands and the care
and attention they gave her both for her physical and psychological health meant that she improved greatly and enjoyed many years as a resident. The owner is very involved and knows all the residents really well and pays special attention to keeping in touch with their families. The Manager leads an incredible team with knowledge and kindness and provides individualised care for each resident that is tailor made for them and reviewed. We couldn't have asked for anything more during Mum's time with them. She viewed them all as family and was the happiest with them that we'd seen in years which gave me great reassurance. Thank you Southlands.

My mother was at Southlands for just over 2-years, during the very difficult pandemic period. All our family were very pleased with the care and attention she received and the efforts to make the frequent lockdowns bearable for both her and us.
The management and staff are excellent, and we would
not hesitate in recommending Southlands to anyone looking for a top quality home in Newton Abbot.

My auntie settled very quickly and well into Southlands. The staff were kind and caring and always met her needs. She loved the food and also having a bath, which she could not manage at home. She appreciated being wheeled outside in the garden to hear the bird and feel the fresh air. She was looking
forward to the summer when she would be taken out more frequently, but sadly, this wasn't to be. She could not have lived in a better place.

My mother was a resident at Southlands for three years. The care she received while she was there was second to none. The staff made her feel very special and gave not only their time but their friendship, which was especially essential during the long lockdown. The care she received was excellent,
and her health improved when she first arrived with their attention to detail regarding medication, food and exercise. I can't recommend Southlands highly enough to anyone looking for a caring, safe and friendly environment for their family member. The staff all go way above and beyond what they are required to do.

My mother chose Southlands as her care home after we visited another five homes in Devon. She lived there for the last three years of her life, and viewed her new home as a long term hotel stay. Mum was very proud of her home and felt she was treated with dignity in a caring way at all times. Her room
was lovely: a good size with an ensuite and a lovely view from her bay window. As Mum's health deteriorated, she received increasing levels of care but was never made to feel as though she were a burden in any way at all.
Southlands has a policy of engaging relatives with activities in the home, and the opinion of relatives is sought out and respected. Residents are able to contribute their thoughts to how the home operates. Sadly the Covid pandemic caused such complication for all, but Mum always felt safe and well cared for. Special arrangements were made for relatives to visit in the cabin or in the garden. There is a lovely outside deck for residents to enjoy, and the grounds are beautiful.

My aunt lived at Southlands for the last three years of her life, latterly in the most testing of times due to Covid. For her, it was a safe haven - and one which we were exceptionally lucky to find. We couldn't have asked for more. The staff - the owner, the Manager, and everyone else there - have
been wonderful and have shown exceptional levels of professional care, compassion, and kindness throughout my aunt's time there. They have reacted promptly and thoroughly to all the recent challenges. As well as looking after all the residents they have also kept family and friends fully informed through newsletters, telephone calls, etc. I have visited a number of care homes - both professionally and for personal reasons - and have yet to find one better than this.

The care that my mother received was exceptional from the staff at Southlands residential care home. She went into the home on Boxing Day following an illness that needed hospitalisation. She recuperated well and thoroughly enjoyed the social aspect of the other residents. Sadly Mum became ill and deteriorated
very suddenly. The end of life care that my mother was given and the family was given with compassion and dignity. Nothing was too much trouble, and we as a family will always be grateful.

My late mother resided at Southlands for the last 2 years of her life. After understandable initial resistance to the move, mum quickly settled in, making many friends and soon feeling extremely comfortable in her new surroundings. The home operates a very relaxed policy, allowing residents to mix as
they wish. Entertainment and trips were organised on a regular basis prior to the Covid epidemic and mum often played scrabble and other games with a number of her fellow residents which she very much enjoyed. Without exception, the staff are excellent. Exceptionally caring and compassionate, nothing was too much trouble and they were particularly lovely when Mum approached her final days. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff for making Mum’s twilight years so special and would have no hesitation whatsoever in highly recommending Southlands.

My mother has had a new home for the past 12 months. She has made new friends and loves the staff (and the food). During the Coronavirus the staff have continued to be attentive to my mother, gently explaining why life is different and keeping her calm. She has everything she wants in life and is well
cared for. Our visits to her during Coronavirus are through the conservatory door glass and she enjoys these visits. They are, as ever, well planned out by the staff. The staff are very dedicated. They do not simply 'do their job' but much more. They do it with passion, with a genuine interest in the lives of the residents there. They have gone the extra mile with the residents this year. As we look forward to Christmas, tomorrow, my mother will be sad not to be able to be with family, however, I know she will be caught up with the festivities there, and the day will pass with presents, good food, music and laughter. Thank you, Southlands.
Reply from Andrew Bone, Owner at Southlands Residential Care HomeThank you so much for your very kind words, the whole team really appreciates the continued support from all of the relatives and residents. It has been so hard this year for everyone with restricted visiting, us not being able to offer the many trips out or residents going out with family members or having the nursery and primary school weekly visits. However, with the support of our staff team we have had lots of fun, shared many sad and thoughtful discussions and laughed a lot. Christmas and New Year celebrations continue and we look forward to living life to the full in 2021.

My father spent almost a year at Southlands during which time he commented on what a happy place it was. He received a high level of care and was always treated with dignity and respect. The staff were equally supportive and attentive to any concerns raised by family members and swiftly resolved any
problems. Considerable effort was made to ensure that all residents were happy and engaged with a lively programme of activities to suit a variety of tastes. A senior member of staff accompanied my father to hospital and sat with him in his final hours until family members could arrive. I would have no hesitation in recommending Southlands to anyone requiring residential support.

We knew Southlands was the right place for our 90-year-old Mum as soon as we walked through the door. It is a bright and clean home with welcoming and efficient staff. Mum was happy and well looked after for the nine months Southlands was her home. Family and friends always enjoyed visiting her and
joining in the activities. She became increasingly frail but we are glad that she was treated in such a positive and caring way for the last part of her life.

After a hospital admission, my mother moved to Southlands residential home due to her care needs being more than could be met at home. My mother having been recently bereaved, the home needed to be able to deal with her physical as well as her psychological needs. The management and staff did everything
to make my mother at home. She was treated with dignity and although sometimes unwise, her decisions and personal choices were respected. Sadly after a recurrence of the reason for her admission to Southlands, she decided she had had enough. During the last week of her life either myself or my sister sat with our mother, 24 hours a day. All the staff were so kind. My mother was wonderfully cared for and as family, I will never forget the kindness, friendship and support received from all the staff.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.890)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.890) out of 10 for Southlands Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.890 for Southlands Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (245 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 264 Ratings = 4.89
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Southlands Residential Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 33 registered maximum number of service users is 6.6, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
