Mum spent the past 3 years plus at Higher Park Lodge where she was well cared for. She had been diagnosed with dementia prior to taking up residence and, inevitably, her condition led to a steady decline. However, she always told me that she was happy with her 'home' and the staff who looked after her. These were not only carers but housekeepers, managers, chefs and maintenance staff too and they all visited mum regularly for a chat and to make sure that she had everything she required.

Over the years during mum's stay a good amount of updating to the building has been undertaken though as with any old property this will always be an ongoing project! It is fair to say that a building that has been converted will always have little nuances that some would find perhaps a little old fashioned compared to a purpose-built care home. However, for mum and my siblings, the most important requirement is that she was well cared for, respected and made to feel special.

Having arrived at the Lodge I was struck by the strong smell of urine, upon visiting my mum I observed she had a strong smell of urine her clothes were dirty and her fingernails were caked in old dirt, she was so cold I tried to warm her hands with mine, upon leaving we couldn't find any staff to unlock main door and I was able to go unchallenged around the home looking for staff, the 2 staff working were outside one was smoking and the other was on her phone, I am appalled at the lack of care and compassion shown to residents with dementia

I was looking for a home to care for my wife, who had a horrible cocktail of Brain diseases plus Parkinson's disease.
My daughter and I discovered Higher Park Lodge by chance whilst walking in Devonport Park.
We knocked on the door and enquired about the home and the possibility of us looking around to assess if it was suitable for my wife.
Apart from getting married, knocking on that door was possibly the best decision I made in my life.
We were immediately made to feel very welcome, shown around and invited to meet the managing staff.
A room was available, which we gratefully accepted.
The staff helped me prepare the room, making the bed with my wife's own colourful bedding and hanging pictures, which she had painted when she was well.
Staff came in to introduce themselves and made my wife, and I feel very welcome.
We could see that she was happy and settled down immediately.

She had dietary problems, and the chef discussed the menu daily with her, producing alternatives.
