The atmosphere is friendly, cheerful and willing. It feels like a home, a warm, safe place where you want to be. The staff are attentive, always ready to help with whatever is needed, paying heed to individual characteristics and foibles as well as their physical, mental and social needs. They are kind, caring and responsive and I am confident my mother is looked after and monitored well and her needs met with patience and understanding. Thank you from her and thank you from me.

The carers, activities staff, medical personnel, kitchen/laundry/gardening staff go out of their way to be helpful and kind. Since my husband responds to a smiling face it nearly alwaus appears happy. More varied activities for residents would be appreciated, taking advantage of the beautiful, extensive garden. Taking residents outside to enjoy the fresh air gives so much joy, especially if wheelchair bound. Every effort is made by staff for significant events on the calendar, eg, Easter, Halloween, Divali, etc. The item lacking to a permanent wheelchair accommodating vehicle with at least two assigned drivers from the staff to be able to drive it.

Overall first rate in every respect. Clearly a professional care home with a strong emphasis on personal care. The Old Vicarage has a lived-in feeling which underlays the very relaxing and calm atmosphere. I was just impressed with the capacity to relate to individuals very empathically and to honour their autonomy.

Staff so friendly and helpful. Phone always answered quickly by a caring person on reception. My aunt had the best possible care, always treated with kindness and respect. The home is lovely with beautiful grounds. The rooms and communal areas are clean, comfortable and no smells. Very happy with the care. Thank you.

My mother was accepted for a respite stay at The Old Vicarage as she had become increasingly unwell and I had become unable to meet her care needs at home. My tour of the home, her assessment and swift admission were all conducted with the utmost professionalism and kindness. Sadly she had to be admitted to hospital in the evening of the day she arrived, and this too was handled swiftly, efficiently and effectively. I cannot rate the staff highly enough for their attitudes of care and kindness.

Old Vicarage was my mother's first choice of care home, having visited a number in the area. It did not disappoint. Mum has a lovely room and soon it felt like home. The staff across the board were friendly and professional, and I felt mum couldn't have been in better hands for the 5 1/2 years she was there. Her last months were handled wit great care, dignity and compassion. Thank you, everyone.

Staff are extremely kind & caring, my mother is well looked after. However, residents do not appear to be listened to, sometimes decisions are made that seem to determine the advancement of managerial success rather than residents comfort. Many residents report having dry slush - could the water softening be investigated. Baths should be more accessible. Pressure cushions for use in dining chairs & other similar measures to make eating from a height appropriate as well as residents being allowed more choice in where they sit would facilitate better meal times. Make better use of upper floors, consider extending rooms to add on individual bathrooms & sitting areas.

On the whole pleased with conditions. Gone to old age since being here. Lack of introduction and details of residents. Such a variety of folk! Lack of staff observing when attention is needed. I am disappointed there is no transport anywhere ie surgery and doctors do not seem to see patients when required. I would like to know more about patients so able to make them feel at home.

Reply from Martin Kirkup, Director of Marketing & Sales at The Old Vicarage Care Home

It is lovely to have you here in our home, and we are delighted that you are happy here. Sadly we have limited influence over the surgeries which - like in so many parts of the country - are over-subscribed. But we are able to arrange transport when it is required. We will have to find a way to help you get to know more of our residents, though we have to also be respectful of their privacy.

My mother came in just before Christmas, but she was very grumpy as she didn't want to come to the home- and the staff were absolutely marvellous. They gave her such love, care and attention that she slowly softened to the warmth of the home and very soon they each had her going out for lunch. Sadly she shortly became very unwell with a large undiagnosed until now, cancer tumour, that pulled her into palliative care. The care and attention she got, while she was dying was amazing- right up to her last breaths she was loved, given the utmost dignity and respect by all that looked after her and I thank them from my heat for all of them.

Mother moved into the Old Vicarage shortly before Christmas and very quickly settled in. The staff could not have been more helpful or accommodating as a huge amount of furniture, pictures and objets moved in too. Not to mention a large Siamese cat, the love of Mother's life. Everyone did their utmost to help and to make her feel at home and it worked. Having been anti initially she was very quickly telling her friends what a nice place it was and calling it home. She was soon making plans for the long term including moving her weekly Mahjong group meetings to the Old Vic. Sadly this was not to be as in a very short time Mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and her time at the Old Vic was cut short. The care and compassion shown to both Mother and her connections throughout Mother's last few days was exceptional. I cannot rate the staff highly enough from the wonderful handyman who hung the pictures in her room to the special lady who gave up her own time to sit with Mother.

The lady in question is a recent resident. Despite this, I have noticed a significant improvement in her self, she is much more content, relaxed and outgoing. Each of these I put done to her feeling of security encouraged by one and by all.

We moved Mum here following a less favourable experience in a previous home. Mum has settled immediately. She has a beautiful room and it's kept immaculately clean along with her bathroom. The staff are incredible - helpful, attentive and reassuring. They provide real care for Mum and treat her with kindness and respect and dignity. More than anything they strive hard to give Mum (and all their residents) the best shot at what life they have left and for that I am extremely grateful.

Dad was well looked after and got to know the staff during his six-month stay. Everyone was so kind and considerate of all his needs delivering a professional service with a personal touch. He was very happy during his last months and we as a family took great comfort in knowing he was well cared for.
Staff were very accommodating of his loss of appetite and tried many options to try and tempt him to eat. He was able to move to a lake-view room when one became available and he enjoyed his last days there.

Thank you so much.

I moved my wife to The Old Vicarage from another local nursing home, as they left her in bed 24/7. I was so pleased on my first visit to see that she was up, washed, dressed and sat out in her chair watching TV. What a lovely transformation. I find all the staff very cheerful, helpful and nothing is a problem. She has a lovely room, and the lovely gardens make for a very relaxing home to stay in. Well done all.

I've worked in care for over 30 years. My training includes courses on independence, management and palliative care.

What I enjoy the most about my job is meeting new people who come to live with us and their families. It's all about making sure they feel part of our community, having a natter, and really listening to what they want and need. I make sure everyone gets a say in how things are run here, keep everyone in the loop about any changes, and always have a kettle on for visitors.
