Ganarew House is situated in a quiet Monmouthshire village and surrounded by attractive countryside, much to the enjoyment of those that receive long-term elderly and specialist care at the facility.

The home can house 36 occupants in total and is suitable for many with mobility issues, with good wheelchair access and staff that are trained in increasing the comfort of residents.

Many of the home's rooms have views over the Wye Valley and all residents benefit from the home's own minibus, which takes them often on trips to local tourist attractions and picturesque landscapes.

The staff have always been very caring and making life as bearable as possible for the residents. The food is excellent.
No matter what the problems that of course happen at a dementia home, the staff are always professional and kind.

Ganarew House and the staff have been the biggest lifeline for us. My mum is diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia which is challenging for us as a young family. Ganarew provides a safe and warm environment where all my mum's needs are met with the utmost kindness and patience. The home is welcoming
for us all as a family including our young children. And the other residents are a joy to be around. The activities organised are a nice bonus, and the staff all make such an effort to make the house feel like a home. The building itself it's so beautiful and newly decorated. The food we have been told by Mum is better than a 5-star hotel and always goes above and beyond for Mum's diet as she is coeliac. This is everything we would ever want in a care home and are truly grateful this is the place Mum gets to call home.
Reply from Julie Simons, Registered Manager at Ganarew HouseThank you so much for your lovely review. I will pass this on to all of the staff.

Mum was a resident at Ganarew House for 18 months prior to her passing. During this time the staff were fantastic and always treated Mum with dignity and respect. I was always made to feel welcome when visiting and the staff were more than happy for me to bring my dog up for visits. Overall, Ganarew
House care home is a lovely home to place a loved one but the decor and rooms could do with refreshing.

Ganarew House is outstanding, they have been since my mother moved in earlier this year they have gone above and beyond for all of us to make us and my mum and even our children feel welcome. We have been able to use the ground outside to have family picnics and allow the children to play. All the staff
are friendly and after our first visit, it was remarkable how many staff members knew who we were when coming to visit. We have never had to make appointments to visit, we have just turned up and always been greeted with a warm welcome. This is one of the most amazing care homes I've experienced and I'm sure my mum would also say that she is like a different woman, happy and content.

Ganarew House has given exmeplary care and support for my mother following a stroke ten years ago. As my mother gets more frail and more dependant on the care given by the home, the home has kept us informed of her condition, doctors visits, hospitalisation and changes in the drugs she in son.
Note
my mother never wanted her life to end this way.

The staff have shown a lot of care and attention to my mother since she has been in the home. This has continued even when my mother has been nasty and insulting towards staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them, the open-door policy makes the environment very welcoming and friendly, which makes
the visits more relaxing and a nicer experience.

I have visited my sister many times in the year she has been a resident, I have also phones to speak to the carers about my sister. On each and every occasion I have been struck by the warmth, friendliness, and compassion of everyone towards myself, my family, and most importantly my lovely sister.
I have been involved with a number of residential homes for over 40 years as a GP and I can honestly state that I am so relieved that my sister is in such a caring environment. Thank you all at Ganarew House!

Management and staff of Ganarew House Care Home are absolutely excellent, nothing is too much trouble. Kind, caring and compassionate towards my 95-year-old mother and indeed my whole family. Mum was admitted in January 2024 due to my 96-year-old father breaking his leg, unable to care for her anymore.
Mum has Alzheimer's. She enjoys living here and participates whenever possible in the many activities on offer, bingo, armchair softball, a musical couple who come in with instruments for the residents to ring, rattle and ding along to a whole host of songs, old and new. The food is nice and appetising and is offered to visitors along with morning coffee, afternoon tea/biscuits. Visitors are welcome at any time without appointment which is a plus and as my father and I visit several times a week my sister every 5 weeks as she comes down from another town each time for a long weekend. Cannot fault in any way, all staff try so hard to accommodate many different requests.

My friend has been a resident at Ganarew for the last 2 years. She had been happy and very well cared for. The staff were so friendly with her. When her health began to fail they sat with her and aided when needed.
I can't thank them enough for all their attention.

My mum went into Ganarew House recently for respite and is now a permanent resident. I couldn't be happier with the service they provide. My mum is very happy and settled which is down to the wonderful staff. Nothing is too much for them. There is a great enrichment programme and the food is wonderful.
The rooms are spacious, clean and bright and my mum's room has an en-suite loo as well. It feels like a big family and that makes me very happy.

My grandmother came to Ganarew House in April 2024, and since then we have noticed huge improvements in her mood and general outlook. The staff are always very welcoming, friendly, and approachable and nothing is ever too much hassle. Nan seems to enjoy their company and is very receptive to them. Her
health and hygiene appear to be well-maintained.

Excellent care provided to our mum throughout her time in Ganarew. All the staff were welcoming, friendly and went to great lengths to care for the residents. Mum's bedroom was cosy and spotlessly clean. Meals were good quality, hot and nicely presented. I would not hesitate to recommend this care home.

Mum came to Gabarew House for a month for respite care. She settled in so well that she decided to stay. Whenever we visited, the staff appeared to be happy, fully interacting with residents. Always spotlessly clean, and the food - yummy! Can I book my place now, please?

My mother lives with us, so to put her into respite care is daunting, I thought nobody can care for her like I do. How wrong was I . Mother is welcomed as a member of the family. The manager and the staff team are a family, the interaction between staff and residents is second to none. They work really
hard to motivate, often with lots of humour to engage with each other. I know my mother is content whilst staying at Ganerew House. The staff are very quick to spot signs of poor health and act upon it promptly. There are no smells other than cleanliness. The food is excellent and should you time a visit around a meal time, which incidentally are many, you too would be offered food. When the time comes for Mother to become a permanent resident, I will have no doubts or concerns for her well-being, care or happiness.

A really friendly care home with great staff. The only downside is it could do with a coat of paint in the corridors and the carpets could do with replacing in the main areas. My wife tells me the food is good.

My Dad has been at Ganarew House for a year now. He went there after a stroke which further increased the dementia he was already experiencing. His anxiety caused by his memory loss was making it hard to cope with him at home. At Ganarew House the routine, the activities and care suit him very well.
He enjoys the food and it certainly smells very good. We are so pleased to have got him a place there. It's good to see all the various themes they have and to enjoy Facebook photos. The staff are professional and caring and I am always made welcome when I go to visit. The care is far beyond what I could offer him and he is thriving there.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.888)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.888) out of 10 for Ganarew House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 35 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.888 for Ganarew House is calculated as follows: ( (376 Excellents x 5) + (37 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 418 Ratings = 4.888
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ganarew House is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 37 registered maximum number of service users is 7.4, which has been reached with 35 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
