A real 'home from home' with caring, smiling staff who appear to have a real empathy with the residents. There are activities every day that are designed to engage, stimulate and motivate the residents and are tailored to individual challenges and needs. Catering appears excellent with much flexibility
offered as to mealtimes and choices. Challenging behaviour is met with patience and kindness.

I am pleased that the staff always call the residents by name - even if they are just passing them in cooidors - very important that the residents are reminded who they are. I wish there was a better system for sorting the clothes of residents. many times my husband has someone elses clothes. Likewise
with hearing aids - both my husbands have been lost. I know he moves things around and it's not easy to keep tabs on what he does, but it makes for communication evenmore difficult.

I feel my mum is beautifully and lovingly looked after. The carers treat all the residents with dignity and respect. I see many of the carers interacting with residents as if they were their family members

On entering the home, the general air of happiness is obvious. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and mum regularly sings their praises. She is very happy here, and we couldn't wish for anything more.

My wife went to live at Whitegates just over two years ago with dementia. After she had been there about two weeks she suffered a severe stroke, she is now almost completely paralyzed and can speak very little, but the staff take great care of her. She's washed and dressed every day and taken to the
lounge where she can be with the other residents. It requires two carers to attend to her but she is handled and cared for with all the love and attention I could wish for.
The staff treat me as a friend and keep me informed of my wife's condition. Not only do they take great care of my wife but because of my trust in them I have been able to continue with my own life although at times it is with great sadness.

I have been visiting Whitegates now for a number of years. All aspects of this home are exceptional and it would be my first choice if any of my relatives would need care within Herefordshire. The managers work and enthusiasm towards ensuring everybody's needs are met is amazing. The care staff from
Senior to Junior are friendly, professional, helpful and every other positive adjective you could use. The home and its rooms are kept very clean with decoration and furnishing being kept immaculately. The meals which I have to admit I have not tasted smell very appetising and is presented nicely. There is always tea and coffee offered to visitors and if you time it right the cakes are great :).

My mother was cared for during the last 19 months of her life at Whitegates. We found it by good luck and would wholeheartedly recommend this home to anyone looking for complete peace of mind when entrusting their loved one to the care of a care home. The care provided to my mother was exceptional and
consistent. The staff are genuinely caring and friendly and they do all they can do make every resident feel special, unique, and at home. They make a real effort to get to know the residents, their likes and dislikes and then to respond to these. As the needs of the residents change, they are flexible and observant enough to respond to these new needs, whether these are physical, mental or emotional.
The teamwork displayed by the staff in all roles is exceptional and the leadership there is exemplary, both from the top as well as from the team of seniors who often work in very difficult circumstances and yet are always calm, efficient and caring. There is clearly a genuine affection there between the staff and the residents.
Food is full of variety, wholesome, balanced and nourishing. There is a peaceful homely atmosphere, and there are frequent activities available for residents to join in with if they wish to, but a choice of other lounges available if they prefer not to. Rooms are pleasant, clean and fresh and many have beautiful views. The gardens are very well looked after and residents can often be found enjoying them in the summer.
The end of life care provided to my mother can only be described as tender and loving. My Mum died peacefully and with dignity. Thank you very much Whitegates.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.874)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.874) out of 10 for Whitegates is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.974 for Whitegates is calculated as follows: ( (184 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.974
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Whitegates is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 37 registered maximum number of service users is 7.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
