My dad was on respite at St Stephens care home for a week in February. The staff at the home were very friendly from the moment my dad's respite started. All the staff went above and beyond for my dad. The management team supported my dad and myself when my dad came on respite. This was a first for
both of us. The activities are brilliant and my dad enjoyed joining in. My dad really enjoyed his stay and said he can't wait till his next respite there.

My father has been in the home since January 2023. He has settled in really well. The care he's been receiving has been brilliant, everyone has been really friendly. It gives me peace of mind to know he is looked after really well. I cannot fault any member of staff at all.

My mother has only been a resident at St Stephens care home since early July, but in that short time she has received excellent care. I think it will take Mum a while to settle and I cannot say she is happy living in residence care and has decided to stop eating as she normally would. The staff have
been brilliant in helping Mum to settle in and encouraging her to eat properly. One member of staff on the care team told Mum she was going to the local supermarket and offered to buy her anything she might fancy for her tea. Whenever I talk to a member of the care team, they seem to be right up to date with how Mum is doing and quickly raise any concerns they have with me. I cannot fault the care she is receiving and would have no hesitation in recommending St Stephens to anyone, should they need the services of a care home.

My dad came in for two weeks of respite, and we couldn't have asked for better care. All the staff throughout the home (all departments) were caring, kind and compassionate towards my dad and also ourselves. It was a nice, friendly atmosphere. We could visit anytime, and the staff were always on hand
to chat about my dad's case. His room was clean and comfy with a TV, much to his delight. The food, drinks, etc, were well-balanced and good.

My mum stayed here for a fortnight while I went on a trip abroad. I was a little worried as Mum has lived alone with her dog for many years. I just couldn't let her stay in her flat, even with four carer visits a day, as she wouldn't be safe. The place is absolutely brilliant, as are all of the staff.
Mum had a lovely room, and there was a choice of lounges where she could sit and watch TV, or she could interact with other residents. There is a nice garden at the back where she could go, with a carer, for a ciggy when she wanted one, although she didn't actually smoke as much as I'd thought she would. Mum looked so well when I collected her. Physically anyway. She was clean and well-fed. I did have to remove Honey (dog) from my mum a few weeks back as she really wasn't caring for her properly, so Honey (dog) lives with me and my cats. She is currently in the inpatient wing awaiting a room in a care home. I really do hope that she can go back to St Stephen's.
Reply from Roksana Senanayake, Senior Customer Relations Manager at St StephensThank you very much for your fantastic review of St Stephens care home. Since my sister moved to St Stephens, she seems very happy. The staff and carers are very friendly and helpful. It's really good that they bring them from their rooms so they have people around them and not sat in their rooms alone. When we visit, they all seem to make us feel welcome and willing to
answer any questions we need to ask.

I must congratulate the new management team, carers and kitchen staff. There are two particular members of staff that are particularly outstanding. My ex-husband was discharged back to the home with end-of-life care. They refused to give up on him and they have our family's heartfelt thanks. I was always
made welcome and observed the care and kindness shown to all the residents even those most challenging. I can honestly say St Stephens isn't just a care home it is a family.

I came to stay for some respite, I have to say the stay was very good, I was supported with all I needed.
My room was lovely, staff were very friendly and approachable.
I see there are improvement works going on in the building, which can only mean it gets better as some areas are tired.
The food
was always lovely, with plenty of choices. Christmas day lunch was beautiful.

St Stephens is where my aunt lives and has done for a little time now. For a long time she hasn't been settled and would often ask to leave and live elsewhere.
Recently that has changed, and I think that is down to the new management team that has come in and started to make big improvements within
the home, from educating staff to decor; well done, it's nice to see such a strong, approachable, honest management team. Keep up this hard work!
The home has been in hot water recently, but we, as a family, can see how much it has improved over the last couple of months.
The staff are brilliant, so caring and courteous, and the care is now fantastic. Well done, care team.
The food, what can I, say about the food - oh my days, it's amazing - shame its not available as a take-out option as I would be ordering daily.
My aunt is now happy at St Stephens, which in turn, makes us happy.

The staff interaction is kind and respectful. I have been made to feel welcome; I can visit when I wish. Over the years, I have been listened to and dealt with promptly. I have seen so much love and kindness shown to my mum and other residents and compassion when people have felt stressed with their
confusion from dementia. I can't speak highly enough of the staff.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.647)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.647) out of 10 for St Stephens is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.647 for St Stephens is calculated as follows: ( (198 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 266 Ratings = 4.647
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Stephens is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 51 registered maximum number of service users is 10.2, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
