Someone living with our definition of "mild dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Memory problems such as misplacing items and not be able to recall recent events (however, in some forms of dementia a person's memory may be unchanged)
- Difficulties thinking through problems and planning, making decisions
- Language and communication issues such as finding it difficult to recall the appropriate word in a conversation or following a conversation
- Poor orientation, getting lost in areas previously familiar to them
- Difficulty judging distances (more falls than usual)
- Changes in their normal mood including anxiety and depression
- In certain types of dementia, personality and behaviour changes may be present alongside or instead of issues with memory or concentration.
Moderate Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "moderate dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Worsened memory problems. Not always recognising own family members and friends. Repeating the same questions over and over again
- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour
If your loved one displays this type of behaviour you may need a care home that has specially trained staff. Verbal/physical aggression is often defined:
- Consistent shouting and screaming
- Verbal abuse
- Physical abuse

Overall Experience
Mum has been in Beech Dene Care Home for nearly five years. We have always been very happy with the care Mum receives and we have built good relationships with all of the staff. We visit on a daily basis and staff are always available to help if we have any concerns about Mum. I am especially impressed that staff are also interested in my dad's welfare and have on occasions phoned to check he is ok if he hasn't called at the usual time.
All of Mum's needs are met and we could not ask for better care.

Overall Experience
I continue to be happy with the care and provision for my mother.
Mum is very settled, and no longer has concerns about her possessions. I feel she is well cared for at an appropriate level. I am most impressed with the staff, the care given and how they treat mum are good. They are always friendly and helpful. Procedures are put in place for Mum's care at times of changing needs and she has benefitted from this.

Overall Experience
Very helpful in finding my father a place when the need arose. Dad took a while to settle but today after a few months in the care of Beech Dene he did seem happier.
Sometimes getting to see Dad can be a little problematic, but they are being very careful about keeping the establishment well-quarantined. Dad says his meals are good and that he likes all of the carers. Overall pleased with the service provided.

Overall Experience
Mum has been at Beech Dene for 7 months and the care she has received has been excellent. Her remaining independence to do certain things is never compromised and gentle assistance is always on hand.
The staff are polite, considerate and kind not only with the residents but also with the families concerned.

Nothing is too much trouble and any concerns are listened to and acted on if needed. They go above and beyond in what they do.

Overall Experience
I can't fault the staff who are lovely, polite and caring, not only about the service user but their family as well. My relative's been there since lockdown and she's settled. Nothing is too much of a mither and I can't fault them.

Overall Experience
The team at Beech Dene are very caring and considerate. They have looked after our Mum for 7 years through good times and bad times and nothing has ever been too much trouble for them to keep up a consistently high level of attention.
