My mum has been in Gildawood for 7 weeks and my overall experience is good. The staff are very welcoming and helpful when we visit. It was a very hard decision about placing mum into a care home but the management and staff have been a great support. Mum is happier since she's been in Gildawood. She looks well and has put on weight, her overall well being has improved. It would be nice if they spent some money on smartening the gardens up though.

Unfortunately during my nans short stay I found the whole setting very unpleasant. I found residents were just placed in chair and had no stimulation during the day or evidence of any activities. On several occasion whilst visiting I noticed care staff sitting around on their mobile phones and on social media sites as witnessed whilst residents were left to it. On more than 2 occasions I found my relative saturated in urine which I can only describe as being stale due to the colour and smell as well as being sat in this in the communal area on a soaked chair around everyone. On another occasion she was found covers in faeces, she is vocal and can communicate her toilet needs. During her short stay I was contacted twice within a week saying she'd had falls when this hadn't occurred even at her own home that many times without 24/7 care. I wouldn't recommend unfortunately basic care needs and standards are not being met from our experience

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate that sometimes seeing a relative in care can be very difficult for the family members. We have reviewed your comments and found that there is some differentiation with our records, starting from our initial assessment of your grandmother before she moved...

My dad came on a discharge to assess, he has settled well and after some confusion of what happens here, we spoke to both a senior and a carer who went out of their way to explain my dad's situation. We felt very welcome and more happy with how my dad's care is. The only point I would make is there is a lack of communication between the hospital, social worker and home about family expectations of their relatives' care. Overal,l I am happy with the home.

Members of staff who are Julie, Rachel, Sarah and Dorothy, I would say go over and above their own jobs, making people comfy and safe. I personally felt very safe in their hands. The rest weren't really bothered with caring, just got together for a laugh. Some people were treated very bad and bullied.

I cannot fault the lovely ladies that work at Gildawood Court, from the lady on reception and the lovely care people. Mum has settled in lovely and our family know she is having the best care and food possible. My only criticism is the decor is very tired and I think all the rooms would benefit from a lick of paint to make it as colourful as the staff. The room furniture is also a bit worse for wear.

Our dad was placed in a D to A bed here, we had no other care home choice. Reception staff are lovely, but dad nor any of his family enjoyed this placement. The home seems very clinical, has no carpet, and we were told not to go in at lunchtime. The dietician agreed that we should go in to encourage dad to eat; the food was awful, we took pictures of one meal, and I completely understand why dad (who loved to eat!) refused dinners. The staff were ok, but did not communicate with us. They all went for a tea break at 3pm, so if you needed a member of staff that wasn't possible. We requested a DNR to be put in place but it wasn't.

Dad has dementia, so staff would ask him him he wanted to go into the dining room or sit in the chair, but he always said, "no". They would never pursue this so he didn't get out of bed at all for the 4 weeks he was there. His mobility has always been a problem, but they have made this worse through their lack of perseverance.

When I first visited Gildawood I was greeted by the lady on reception who was very friend and helpful. I was taken to my dads room which is very nice clean and comfortable. The nurses are very friendly and explained how dad would be taken care of and if we need to ask any questions. There were there to help, the food is first class with very good choices. My dad really enjoys the food. We feel comfortable that dad is in good hands and taken care of without any worries.

Found the home smelly. Very few staff at any time. White staff can be rude. Black girls are more friendly. Untrained and taking too long to care for residents. The toilet had excrement in and the bedpan had too. I had to clean and flush the toilet. The resident is made to feel they were in the way and made to feel prisoner.

Just cannot fault the care received by Dad at Gildawood. He went from being bed ridden and unable to feed himself after hospital discharge to being up on his feet and getting a little bit of independence back even with him living with Alzheimer's. Big thanks to all the staff. You are all amazing and he would have definitely stayed with you if it was closer to home.

Mum's been in care for nearly 3 years and as her health has deteriorated her support has increased. I can't fault the way she's been treated throughout her stay or how the home keeps her family up to date with her changing medical needs.

Overall a good place. Dad was upstairs on a discharge to assessment. Nice enough room however could have done with hoovering and cobweb removal more often!

Hayley Rix
Hayley RixJob Title:Home Manager

I have worked in the care sector since 2005. I first started as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities, then became a CQC-registered manager in 2009. Since then, I have managed various care settings, including domiciliary, supported living, residential and nursing before Gildawood Court.

I enjoy the variety which each day brings at a care home. It is my responsibility to ensure that our residents receive the best care possible, that they are listened to and that their needs are met. It is also really important that my staff are supported in their role to assist our residents. It is a team effort, and we all need to be working together to ensure the development of the home is the best it can be for its residents, relatives and staff.
