Gildawood Court Care Home in Nuneaton provides the highest standard of residential and dementia care, for up to 60 elderly people, including trial stays, short stays, convalescent care and long-term care for individuals or couples. The dementia care provision has been designed to meet the University of Stirling’s standards, which are widely acknowledged as providing the best living environment for people living with dementia. Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre is renowned as the world leader in this field.

As part of the team's specialist dementia training, the care team are provided with ways to make the activities as meaningful and stimulating as possible for those living with dementia, as well as addressing the clinical aspects of care. It also allows the chefs to have the relevant knowledge to cater for those living with dementia and/or dysphagia, presenting food in a creativity and sensory stimulating way.

The home always encourages residents to bring important personal possessions to personalise bedrooms. The residents benefit from a broad and stimulating range of activities, with a programme developed in partnership with their dedicated activities coordinator. I moved my mum out of this home in January 2021, after nearly six years there. I’ve waited until now to write this review as I needed time to reflect and be accurate in my review.
In the nine months my Mum has been away in her new home she has lost over 14 kgs, her mobility has increased enormously,
she’s had no urine infections, she’s off the strong painkillers, she’s not had one fall, her health has improved in all areas, with no other flare-ups of cellulitis, her mental health has improved and she’s far more alert and engaged. She hasn’t “lost” her glasses once nor has she been dressed in anyone else’s clothes, or indeed anyone else’s clothes in her wardrobe. Her belongings, including her toiletries, don’t go missing either.
Having made complaints to Caring Homes, CQC, WCC, and the Information Commissioner, I finally got closure yesterday (after nine months) when I got access to the information I requested and was legally entitled to.
This care home went from good to poor in a short time.

Finally, after 13-months have been able to visit my mum. Have been in contact via Skype over the year, thanks to the two ladies who make this happen. But, nothing is better than actually seeing my mum and holding her hand. Just a big thank you to all staff who have looked after my mum through this period.

I am really happy with the care provided at Gildawood Court. The staff are friendly and caring with the residents and their families. Activities are provided to help pass the data which are fun and appear to be enjoyed by all. The home always appears clean and rooms are cleaned daily. Whilst it is a
big home, the small units help keep the care personal and because of that, it helps with the caring feeling of the home.

Within the last six months or so the care has gone downhill which is a real shame. More care has been needed but not made, more falls, more visits to the hospital and recently a very concerning thing happened where paramedics were called and they were disgusted in how my mother in law had been left
in her room, malnourished and very unwell.

My father was a resident of Gildawood Court from June 2018 until January 2020. All the time he was there, he was treated like one of the family by all the staff. I couldn't have wished for a better home for my father. The staff go above and beyond in their care of the residents. A wonderful caring place

My father-in-law has been in care for just over two years. His condition deteriorated quite quickly and he would not accept care at home so we had little choice but to find a care home for him.
Finding Gildawood has been the best thing that could have happened. From day one, my father-in-law was treated
exceptionally well. He has his own bathroom so very private which suited him perfectly. He has a love of birds and a member of staff bought a bird station for him and positioned it so he could sit in his chair and watch his feathered friends come and go. Since his condition has worsened and he spends more time in his bedroom, the bird station has been moved to outside his bedroom window how thoughtful is that. All the staff are so kind and professional, the home is always bright and cheery and I am always guaranteed a giggle. It is a massive relief to know my father-in-law is safe and well looked after, we are so so grateful to everyone at Gildawood.

My wife entered the home on Dec 2016 and until her death on the 12 May 18 having spent one week at hospital.
The care and kindness of the staff and indeed to myself have been of the silver standard.
I can't thank all enough, I shall be in your home the rest of my life.

The kindness and care shown to my husband during his stay at Gildawood was beyond anything I could have done for him. He was a man of extremes, in his manner and temperament.

Mum loved it at Gildawood but I noticed that sometimes the staff could do with an extra pair of hands as they did not, always, have the time they would like to spend with individual residents.
But the staff that were there always showed love and care to all the residents and families.

Managers/deputy managers were extremely helpful and supportive. However, when help was needed most there was a serious understaffing problem leaving me and my Mum to struggle getting my Dad on and off the commode 3 times in one day which was distressing, especially as we were waiting for the GP to discuss
end of life treatment. The Manager made arrangements for us to pay weekly while assessing. One other issue was having to pay £945 for his last week when he spent 6 3/4 days of that week in hospital. A refund should have been issued as his room was cleared that day.

Providing excellent care for our residents and support for their loved ones during end of life care is always our utmost priority. I would like to reassure the family that Gildawood Court was not understaffed and that their father was helped with his toileting and other needs on a frequent basis. Our managers and care team were in regular contact with the family during their time here with us and our manager’s door is always open should they wish to discuss anything further.

Cross communication between staff/shift is my only criticism. Individually, the staff range from good to excellent and my mother-in-law is very content and loves the food. Communication to her is with an understanding of her dementia and she is well treated.

My father was a resident at Gildawood Court for a couple of years. He settled in really quickly and all the staff were amazing, really friendly and the care my dad received was excellent. Communication between the home and myself was also good, they kept us updated on everything concerned with my dad.

My mother, 92 years, was welcomed with open arms and smiling faces. We were assured of my mothers care and so were happy to leave mum in the staffs care. Every time I visited mum I could see she was being cared for. (Food, cleanliness, social and health) When mum was first taken in I would phone in
the morning and evening and each time I asked how she was the staff (whoever was on duty) gave me a full report of her condition (Food consumption, clothing and cleanliness, social and health). It wasn't; wait 5 minutes I'll find out; the staff on duty (even having just come on duty) knew how my mum was. Mum was happy at Gildawood.

In the few weeks my father has been at Gildawood he has received fantastic care and attention from all the staff.
He has never eaten so well and loves his room.

My husband passed away while the carers were getting him ready for bed. They were excellent. I'm so grateful they were with him. I've visited since and all staff have been so kind. Rooms need decorating.

All staff were very supportive to me as a daughter and very caring and supportive to my mother during her stay there. Nothing was too much trouble. My mum could not have stayed anywhere better, I believe Gildawood to be the best care home in the area. The building was always clean and tidy and the residents
were always looked after as if they were the staff's parents.

Hayley Rix

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2020

I joined Gildawood Court as Home Manager in September 2020, after spending the last 15 years of my career in the care sector.


I first started in 2005 as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities, becoming a CQC Registered Manager in 2009. Since then, I have managed various care settings, including domiciliary, supported living, residential and also nursing before starting at Gildawood Court.


As Home Manager, I enjoy the variety and challenges which each day brings at a care home. I have been impressed with how the team at Gildawood Court genuinely know the residents as individuals and treats everyone with such care and respect.


It is my responsibility to ensure that our residents receive the best care possible, that they are listened to and that their needs are met. It is also really important that my staff are supported in their role to assist our residents. It is a team effort and we all need to be working together to ensure the development of the home is the best it can be for its residents, relatives and staff.


I am also looking forward to building strong relationships with the local community and being active in exploring the lovely surrounding area.


In my spare time, I like to take my dog for walks and relax on the sofa watching a good movie.
