I moved my mum out of this home in January 2021, after nearly six years there. I’ve waited until now to write this review as I needed time to reflect and be accurate in my review.
In the nine months my Mum has been away in her new home she has lost over 14 kgs, her mobility has increased enormously, she’s had no urine infections, she’s off the strong painkillers, she’s not had one fall, her health has improved in all areas, with no other flare-ups of cellulitis, her mental health has improved and she’s far more alert and engaged. She hasn’t “lost” her glasses once nor has she been dressed in anyone else’s clothes, or indeed anyone else’s clothes in her wardrobe. Her belongings, including her toiletries, don’t go missing either.
Having made complaints to Caring Homes, CQC, WCC, and the Information Commissioner, I finally got closure yesterday (after nine months) when I got access to the information I requested and was legally entitled to.

This care home went from good to poor in a short time.

Finally, after 13-months have been able to visit my mum. Have been in contact via Skype over the year, thanks to the two ladies who make this happen. But, nothing is better than actually seeing my mum and holding her hand. Just a big thank you to all staff who have looked after my mum through this period.

I am really happy with the care provided at Gildawood Court. The staff are friendly and caring with the residents and their families. Activities are provided to help pass the data which are fun and appear to be enjoyed by all. The home always appears clean and rooms are cleaned daily. Whilst it is a big home, the small units help keep the care personal and because of that, it helps with the caring feeling of the home.

Within the last six months or so the care has gone downhill which is a real shame. More care has been needed but not made, more falls, more visits to the hospital and recently a very concerning thing happened where paramedics were called and they were disgusted in how my mother in law had been left in her room, malnourished and very unwell.

My father was a resident of Gildawood Court from June 2018 until January 2020. All the time he was there, he was treated like one of the family by all the staff. I couldn't have wished for a better home for my father. The staff go above and beyond in their care of the residents. A wonderful caring place with amazing staff.

My father-in-law has been in care for just over two years. His condition deteriorated quite quickly and he would not accept care at home so we had little choice but to find a care home for him.

Finding Gildawood has been the best thing that could have happened. From day one, my father-in-law was treated exceptionally well. He has his own bathroom so very private which suited him perfectly. He has a love of birds and a member of staff bought a bird station for him and positioned it so he could sit in his chair and watch his feathered friends come and go. Since his condition has worsened and he spends more time in his bedroom, the bird station has been moved to outside his bedroom window how thoughtful is that. All the staff are so kind and professional, the home is always bright and cheery and I am always guaranteed a giggle. It is a massive relief to know my father-in-law is safe and well looked after, we are so so grateful to everyone at Gildawood.

My wife entered the home on Dec 2016 and until her death on the 12 May 18 having spent one week at hospital.
The care and kindness of the staff and indeed to myself have been of the silver standard.

I can't thank all enough, I shall be in your home the rest of my life.

The kindness and care shown to my husband during his stay at Gildawood was beyond anything I could have done for him. He was a man of extremes, in his manner and temperament.

The staff did their utmost to care for him in difficult circumstances. I will always be grateful to all of them. Thank you.

Mum loved it at Gildawood but I noticed that sometimes the staff could do with an extra pair of hands as they did not, always, have the time they would like to spend with individual residents.

But the staff that were there always showed love and care to all the residents and families.

Managers/deputy managers were extremely helpful and supportive. However, when help was needed most there was a serious understaffing problem leaving me and my Mum to struggle getting my Dad on and off the commode 3 times in one day which was distressing, especially as we were waiting for the GP to discuss end of life treatment. The Manager made arrangements for us to pay weekly while assessing. One other issue was having to pay £945 for his last week when he spent 6 3/4 days of that week in hospital. A refund should have been issued as his room was cleared that day.

Cross communication between staff/shift is my only criticism. Individually, the staff range from good to excellent and my mother-in-law is very content and loves the food. Communication to her is with an understanding of her dementia and she is well treated.

Hayley Rix
Hayley RixJob Title:Home Manager

I have worked in the care sector since 2005. I first started as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities, then became a CQC-registered manager in 2009. Since then, I have managed various care settings, including domiciliary, supported living, residential and nursing before Gildawood Court.

I enjoy the variety which each day brings at a care home. It is my responsibility to ensure that our residents receive the best care possible, that they are listened to and that their needs are met. It is also really important that my staff are supported in their role to assist our residents. It is a team effort, and we all need to be working together to ensure the development of the home is the best it can be for its residents, relatives and staff.
