Overview

The Review Score of 9.3 (maximum of 10) for The Rowans Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 25 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Rowans Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.458 for The Rowans Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (178 Excellents x 5) + (85 Goods x 4) + (26 Satisfactorys x 3) + (8 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 297 Ratings = 4.458

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.833 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Rowans Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 10.8 positive Reviews (54 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 9 Reviews ÷ 10.8 Target = 0.833

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.3 The Rowans Care Home has a Review Score of 9.3 (9.291) from 25 Reviews

Mum went into respite when Dad was taken into hospital. She was apprehensive. The Rowans is a lovely place, the staff were helpful and friendly. The care was great and although staff are busy they always make time for the people staying and family. When the time comes I wouldn't hesitate to call them to see if they can help.

My mum, who has Alzheimer's, recently spent two weeks at The Rowans for respite care. We weren't sure what to expect as this was a first-time visit and Mum was apprehensive, however, she seems to have enjoyed her time there and has returned home more relaxed. The bedroom was pleasant, quite like a B&B room in fact.

There are various lounges - small and large - and the dining areas have a welcoming feel and clean appearance. Mum particularly enjoyed the food. There appear to be plenty of activities going on daily but no one has to join in unless they want to. There always seemed to be plenty of staff members around and they all were cheerful and knew my mum by name. Obviously being in a care home is not like being in your own home but I think Mum, who lives alone normally, found it easy to feel at home and described her stay there as like being on holiday.

The environment and atmosphere is very friendly, there is always someone to ask and happy to help. The care and support my uncle has received has been very good, however, I do feel sometimes I have had to address some of the things I wanted doing a couple of times.

My uncle is always treated with dignity, I feel he feels respected by the nurses, some, in particular, listen to him intently. Staff are always available to talk, some know my uncle very well and have a good relationship with him. The management is excellent and have always been there, they are always happy to listen to your concerns and will resolve them the best way they can. Rooms are clean and presentable, they are hoovered and cleaned by staff regularly. Staff also come round to rooms of the residents to see how they're doing, they also collect them for meal times. The facilities and activities are excellent, always entertainment on and something to do. I feel its a safe environment for my uncle and he gets good quality care for the money.

The care generally is of a very high standard. Staff seem to work well as a team and one feature is that whenever visiting all the staff greet me with a smile and a warm welcome. Above all, there is great confidence my father is being well looked after.

In my opinion, not suitable for people in later stages of Dementia/Alzheimers, not caring enough, no compassion from Management and majority of staff.

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at The Rowans Care Home responded to this review on 08 Dec 2017:

Thank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback as this helps us to improve our service where required. Unfortunately, at times some Residents do become poorly and as The Rowans is not a nursing home, some may need to transfer to a nursing home where their nursing needs can best be met and they can be effectively supported. Communication is a key component in running an efficient service and so we hold a weekly Manager’s surgery which allows relatives to meet with the Home Manager at specific times. The Manager does have an open door policy and would be happy to discuss any issues you might have.

My mum was in this care home for 6 months from 28 March to 16 September 2017 at which point I decided to move her out due to being concerned at the level of care she was receiving and the poor environment on the dementia floor. She spent her first couple of months of residency downstairs (which was a more pleasant environment) and was then moved due to several falls and the home saying she needed to be upstairs.

When I moved her out of this care home on 16th September 2017 she had lost several kilos in weight, had UTI and severe constipation, looked generally unkempt and appeared to be withdrawing further into her dementia.

At the start of mum's stay with this care home I felt I had made the right choice of home for her but by the end of the 6 months, I felt it was a case of profit over people at this care home.

Some of the staff were lovely and I felt doing the best they could in a difficult situation ie: trying to care for too many residents.

Claire Hurworth, Careline Manager at The Rowans Care Home responded to this review on 03 Nov 2017:

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback. We value your comments and strive to achieve good quality of care for all of our residents. The Rowans is at present in the process of having a refurbishment and works should be finished in the near future which will include the communal areas for our residents so they have a restful and relaxing environment. Food and fluids are provided throughout the day and night and there are also additional snacks and fluids available in all communal areas, residents weights are monitored on a regular basis as per company policy and any weight loss or concerns are reported to GP and referral is sent to dietician by the GP.

I cannot fault with the home all management and staff go above and beyond what is expected. Facilities are excellent.

My brother was well cared for whilst with you, he seemed happy and he only got upset just before he went into hospital, he was frightened and this was recognised by staff and comfort was given, most of the staff thought a lot of him and did their best for him.
I do think the home needs updating, new windows etc... and could sometimes have been cleaner but the staff have a lot to deal with.
Drinks were always an issue and I could never be sure if sufficient liquid was consumed, sometimes my brother seemed extremely thirsty.
Overall he was well looked after.

The Rowans is due to have a refurbishment within the near future, which will include the communal areas for our residents so they have a restful and relaxing environment. We do have a cleaning schedule which is monitored daily by the home manager, and we will ensure that this is being adhered to at all times. We also monitor residents fluid intake and output to ensure that they are receiving the right amount of fluids on a daily basis, which is again monitored daily by the home manager.

My wife's aunt, who had dementia went to The Rowans when her late husband went into hosptial and died. The Rowans is very well run, with a friendly, helpful and willing staff. Whenever we call the home, the staff that we speak to are always happy and answer any questions. The range of activities was excellent. The aunt was very contented at The Rowans.

From my first visit to view The Rowans as a care home for my mother. All the staff were friendly and helpful. It was easy for my father and other members of the family to visit. The care given to my mother in the last months of her life was kind and friendly.

My mother was cared for at The Rowans Care Home until she sadly died aged 95. The home was always very clean and lovely and warm. The management and staff were exceptional. They always treated mum with dignity and care. We visited a lot and they always made us feel very welcome and they made a lovely cup of tea!

My mum was transferred to The Rowans in Coalville in May 2016 from another home which closed. From the day my mother moved in, the staff were brilliant. From the manager down, they all welcomed my mum and did their best to make her feel welcome and at home.
My mum aged 96, wasn't easy to care for, refusing all attempts to get her to integrate with the other residents. But respecting my mum's wishes, they cared for her within the confines of her room which was comfortable and always clean.
My mum's health deteriorated during the following months, sadly passing away on the 3rd January 2017. During this time mum received continual care, someone being present with her almost continually. I can not thank them or praise them enough. I live 25 miles from the home, but they kept me constantly updated on mums condition. When mum passed away, I received sensitive comforting from the staff. I know they did all they could to ensure my mums comfort during her time there. Thank you.

Well done to all the team looking after nana at The Rowans, the team were so efficient in looking after her and nothing was too much for them, even at the time of passing, the staff were so helpful and sympathetic, the careers and all staff (even the ones you don't see) all make the difference in providing care and dignity to loved ones.
I would certainly recommend this facility to others. Keep up the good work, you all deserve the recognition for all the hard work and care you provide!
Well done. Hope you enjoyed the chocolates, flowers and thank you card for your efforts.

I have been at The Rowans for eight years so that the length of time bears all the points to a good home. The present manager is the best we have had while I have been here, may this set up last for a long time. Some of us went to Staunton Harold in the mini bus which was organised by our manager, and we had a grand time.

I stayed at The Rowans Care Home for 1 weeks respite care and experienced, at first hand, the attentive care and consideration shown by management and staff towards the residents, who were always treated with dignity and understanding. If I had any questions or requests the manager, deputy manager or administrator were accessible and helpful, as indeed were all the staff.
The overall atmosphere was light and welcoming, with no depressing undertones and this was also complemented by the light and bright décor. The food and drink which was offered frequently was also excellent. This was my first venture into a care home and it was a positive experience at The Rowans.

My wife has been here for initial respite care for 4 weeks. This has now become permanent. Before deciding on The Rowans I visited the CQC site which gave a good rating in all areas. I visited there on 3 occasions - before my wife commenced her stay. The care home is ran extremely well. The staff are friendly, helpful, considerate and empathise with residents. Activities are run daily! The meals are excellent. The rooms, lounges are well furnished and the bedroom is made and of reasonable size with wash basin and sink. I feel we've made the right choice in choosing this care home.
