Overview

The Review Score of 9.6 (maximum of 10) for Acacia Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 18 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Acacia Lodge Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.563 for Acacia Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (127 Excellents x 5) + (82 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 215 Ratings = 4.563

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Acacia Lodge Care Home is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 8 positive Reviews (40 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 18 Reviews ÷ 8 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.6 Acacia Lodge Care Home has a Review Score of 9.6 (9.563) from 18 Reviews

My Mum lived at Acacia Lodge for just under two years, until her death in May 2018. Throughout her time there, she was treated with kindness, dignity and respect, often referring to members of staff as her friends, because they always went the extra mile. The room she had was lovely - spacious and welcoming - as well as clean and well cared for. Knowing that her final moments were spent with people who really cared about her, and who have been supportive to us following her death, means so much.

An improvement overall since the takeover with the new owners. A big bonus was the sight of my brother-in-law sitting in a wheelchair in the community room with other residents (a year+ at Acacia Lodge) for the first time, with promises of lifts out of bed and into the wheelchair and promises of being taken downstairs to see his uncle. I feel confident the scores will improve higher.

Overall we have found the home a very comfortable place and cannot fault the carers. If I was to say anything negative, it's that the management could make themselves a bit more available and that when things like thickener amount and feeding problems are changed, it is made clear to all carers, old and new. As a family, we have had to explain on a few occasions that we truly wish there were more carers so that the residents could be checked on a more regular basis.

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Acacia Lodge Care Home responded to this review on 05 Feb 2018:

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our home and for the kind comments regarding our staff. We value all feedback as this helps us improve all our services. As the new Manager for Acacia Lodge, I pride myself on being available to Relatives, Residents and staff alike and have an open door policy where anyone can come and talk to me. Our Deputy Manager, who is a very experienced Nurse, is also available to discuss any relatives concerns. To ensure that all staff are aware of our Resident’s individual needs, I have introduced a more consistent communication process that includes a concise structured clinical handover (twice daily) that all staff participate in, daily meetings with all heads of department, daily clinical reviews and weekly clinical meetings. A schedule of monthly relatives meetings is being put in place, where the Deputy Manager and myself will be available to discuss queries or concerns either in a group setting or privately if required. We constantly strive to deliver the kindest of care and will continue to do this in every way we can.

Staff are excellent, very helpful and caring. The bedroom is clean and tidy, nothing is too much trouble for the girls.

My experience of Acacia Lodge is extremely wonderful. They can't do enough for my dad and also my mum when she visits. The nurses and carers are wonderful. Please don't change anything, except make sure the staff are kept as happy as the residents.

Happy with the welfare/treatment to Nan. Friendly staff always do their best but are sometimes pushed to the limit due to understaffing.

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Acacia Lodge Care Home responded to this review on 06 Feb 2018:

We are grateful for your comments that you are happy with the treatment and welfare your Nan is receiving at Acacia Lodge. The team will be pleased to hear you find them friendly which is the environment we aim to provide at all times. There are times when staff are extremely busy but we encourage anyone if concerned about staffing levels to speak to the Manager or person in charge who will listen to any comments and take action where appropriate. The overall well-being of our Residents is our primary concern at all times.

Carers take excellent care of my nan. She absolutely loves them all and has been so happy since she settled in. Carers are always respecting her dignity and promoting individuality. Also they build appropriate relationships with her.

They are sometimes understaffed which affects some quality.

Thank you for the very thoughtful comments about the excellent care your Nan is receiving and we are pleased to note she has settled in. Respecting her dignity and individuality is an important part of the kind care we strive to achieve all times. However we are sorry to note you feel the Home is understaffed at times – we do very occasionally experience a disruption of staffing levels due to sickness but these are not common – if anyone ever feels concerned about staffing levels we encourage them to raise this with the Manager immediately and their concern will be listened to.

Kindness and thoughtfulness in care and attitude has given my wife a secure and safe environment over the last 3 years which we will be extremely grateful.
A wonderful family of cares who have a fabulous attitude and bring a little happiness to residents.

Nan's care is fantastic, she is always well presented and nothing is too much for anyone. Always somebody for her to talk to if she wants a chat. She is awkward when taking her tablets but never a problem for whoever is with her. Her room is always clean and tidy.

My mother has been a resident at Acacia Lodge for 3 years. My father-in-law was also a resident for last 6 months until his recent death. In both cases, I have found the care very good, although more staff on duty would provide greater care for all residents.

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Acacia Lodge Care Home responded to this review on 06 Feb 2018:

Thank you for the kind comment relating to both your mother and more recently your father-in-law. We strive to offer the kindest possible care to all our Residents and keep staffing levels under constant review to ensure sufficient numbers are available for the needs of our clients. We actively encourage feedback with any particular concerns to us either directly to the management or through our regular relative meetings. We are grateful that you find the care at Acacia Lodge very good, our commitment is that you will always find this to be the case.

My husband, who suffers with vascular dementia, has been at Acacia Lodge for two years. He was only 67 years old when first admitted. The care given to him and all residents is excellent. Although they are understaffed, the majority of the carers give 110%, not only the carer's, all the other staff treat residents and family with respect, care and dignity. Over the past two years, my husband's health both mentally and physically has deteriorated, but the staff have always kept me informed of all stages when those things have happened. If I needed to go into care and thankfully at present I do not, I would choose Acacia Lodge as my home.

Thank you for your extremely kind comments relating to your Husband’s care over the last two years. We are sorry to hear you feel the Home is understaffed however staffing levels are constantly monitored to ensure there are sufficient numbers on duty at all times so that we can deliver the kind care you have experienced from our excellent team members. If any problems do arise with staffing levels mechanisms are in place for us to address these as urgently as possible. We are very grateful you would choose Acacia Lodge for your own care should the need arise in the future – you will be very welcome.

My Dad was previously at a dreadful home where he was overmedicated and depressed.
Since he has been at Acacia Lodge he is off most of his medication now, he is bright and happy.
Dad is clean, always well dressed, his clothes and possessions are treated with respect.
He has gained weight and all the staff not only treat him with respect but take the time to talk to him.
Fabulous home!

Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear about your positive experience and appreciate your comments of our home and will share your comments with the home’s manager. The Bupa Customer Care Team.

The staff are helpful and pleasant. However, I think there should be more staff on each shift so they can interact more with the residents as they do not have the time to do this because of the workload.
When there is something on for the families as well, the rooms are not big enough to accommodate all.
However, I would not want my mum to be in any other home as it is like a second family for us all.
