9.7 Richmond Northampton has a Review Score of 9.7 (9.657)

The Review Score of 9.7 (maximum of 10) for Richmond Northampton is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 29 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Richmond Northampton in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.689 for Richmond Northampton is calculated as follows: ( (245 Excellents x 5) + (91 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 344 Ratings = 4.689

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.968 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Richmond Northampton is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 6.2 positive Reviews (31 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 6 Reviews ÷ 6.2 Target = 0.968

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Claire Fry, Senior VA at Richmond Northampton responded to this review on 12 May 2017:

Thank you for your feedback.

Like anyone facing the difficult decision of how to best support a family member in their twilight years, my family and I approached the team at Richmond with a mixture of fear and trepidation. We needn't have worried. The exceptional level of professionalism of the team is only surpassed by their wonderful warmth, care and (dare I say it) love they show towards my mother. The values that are instilled in the team by the management are in fact instinctive in every member whether it is the catering folks, the care assistants or indeed the nursing staff. My mother's medical needs are complex but everything is taken in their stride. As I joke with the team "they are not here for the money"! Their calling is truly a vocational one and I am humbled by their kindness and dedication to provide the best care possible. If my life journey includes a stay in a care home I have already picked out my room.....

Thank you Mr C for your very kind words, they are much appreciated by all of the team.

My mother entered Richmond Northampton for End of Life Care, where she was a resident for about 7 weeks. The kindness of staff, where nothing was too much trouble to serve my mum and our extended visiting family, was truly outstanding. Careful pain management and medical professionalism, aligned with the love for a dying lady and her family, could not be better. The little touches, on the day we were called to expect my mum to pass away, a plate of sandwiches arrived for the family. The visits of staff outside their shifts went well beyond the call of duty.

At this precious moment in our lives, we are deeply grateful to those at Richmond. Their care, love and service is an example that, if followed, could revolutionise healthcare across our nation.

It was a privilege to look after your mother at the end of her life and support your family. We aim to make the experience as easy as possible in the very difficult circumstances that families find themselves.

Richmond Northampton is a place where you have total confidence that your elderly loved ones (parents) will be safe, looked after well and be happy.

When I hear of reports on the news about terrible care homes, I am grateful that we found Richmond. Richmond's biggest asset is it's staff who are kind and helpful. The domicillary care department is exceptional as we found out recently when our Mother started to need help.

A caring atmosphere.
There is much to entertain residents, so that the grey matter is kept going.
Staff are polite and helpful, many often go out of their way to help.
Food is excellent, though if I had it all the time it could become a little repetitive, not sure there is an answer to that though.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. It is much appreciated.

In the 3 months mum was in the home we experienced amazing care from all the staff. From the moment you were greeted at the reception it was exempt. Mum was treated with respect and dignity and we were welcomed any time of the day and able to make tea/coffee etc. whenever we needed. Mum unfortunately passed away on the 5th of October at the home but the end of life care was so brilliant. We could not have asked for more (she didn't have to go into hospital). The trained palliative care nurses are an absolute credit to the home. We cannot thank them enough.

Thank you so much for your kind words, I know they will be very much appreciated by the team who cared for your mother-in-law. Our best wishes go to you and your family at this difficult time.

This is an extremely well-run organisation. Of special importance to me is the staff who are without exception, lovely, happy and caring. Head of domiciliary care is a real asset to the village and goes out of her way to help. Food is very good as is the entertainment. Having seen other homes this is streets ahead. Not only do I feel my mum who has Alzheimer's is safe, well-fed and looked after but she is involved in activities in array I would never have imagined. This is down to the amazing team here, I would thoroughly recommend it to others.

This is a first class (5 star) home for the elderly or disabled. One can choose assisted living or independent living living depending on one's financial and physical/mental circumstances. The suites (apartments) are one or two bed-roomed with a lounge, kitchen and bath/shower room. There are two floors (ground, first and second). Several public rooms (lounges, games, coffee, library, hair dressing salon, reception, therapy and as very spacious restaurant.) One floor is reserved for patients in need of care. The extensive grounds are superbly tended and used for many events.

Thank you for the review Mr & Mrs S, your feedback is very much appreciated.

I have lived here for just over a year as an independent person. I came because I wanted to be somewhere that had a lovely and caring community with a good variety of activities. The gardens are well set out and maintained - a good mixture of flowers and plants and a joy to walk in. People are friendly, good provision of meeting places. Good provision of transport for shopping and medical appointments etc.

Thank you for your feedback Mrs B, I will pass on your kind words to our Village Gardeners.

Further to our previous review of 9th July 2016 it is only fair to advise that the issue raised regarding the outside decoration of our apartment has been addressed and the front door repainted and adding to the generally excellent standard of maintenance within our village.
The other issue raised was the unfortunate state of the adjoining butterfly garden. This too is being addressed and is in the process of being 'beautified'. Thanks to all concerned.
Other than that Richmond Northampton fully lives up to it's deserved reputation of being a caring, friendly and active Retirement Village.

After my second marriage to my husband in 2001, he began (after about 7 years) to develop signs of dementia. In 2010 I found it difficult to do all the caring that was needed. My son, who lives locally, found this very nice care home in Northampton which really did seem like "home".
My husband died about 2 years ago, and of course I am still here in my very nice flat and am very well looked after. Fortunately (though just 90) I do not yet need any medical care, but have made many good friends here and am very happy.

Thank you Leslie for your feedback, it is very much appreciated.

Carers come to our flat every morning to help my husband shower and dress. This works very well. Carers also come each evening to set up his peg food overnight, this does not work so well as a trained carer is not always available. This means that I have to take over at short notice.
A carer is on duty overnight but often it seems to be an agency worker, who is unfamiliar with the residents problems and sometimes speaks very poor English. This is most unsatisfactory.

Sharon Carlisle, Domiciliary Manager at Richmond Northampton responded to this review on 25 Jul 2016:

Thank you for your feedback. All staff have received Peg Feed training by the District Nurse. The main agency member of staff that attends on occasion has worked at Richmond for two years and competencies have been completed.

The staff who provide our care in the home are clearly carefully selected and familiarise themselves with the job and their clients, by shadowing an experienced colleague. They maintain high competence, and that's important in providing this service, they quickly establish a friendly, open and often genuinely affectionate relationship with the family. This familiarity, warmth and chat are vital. Lapses from this high standard are very rare, almost exclusively involving temporary staff. If I have a concern it is the risk and I can appreciate the difficulties of shortfalls in permanent staff numbers. The right line between maintaining a lean organisation and losing experienced staff, with an unwelcome loss of continuity for the client is difficult but vital.
The wider facilities also provide a path to meeting future needs.
The approachability and responsiveness of the head of care is much appreciated.
'Rooms' and 'food and drink' not applicable in our case.

We are really pleased that our parents are resident at Richmond Northampton. The care that is shown towards them is of a very high standard and staff appear to be genuinely interested in their residents.

On the rare occasions when things do not go well, this is rectified quickly and without a fuss. A real strength is clearly the staff but the efforts made to enable residents to participate in social activities is worth noting.

Our parents have really benefited from being at Richmond and now enjoy a much higher quality of life than they've enjoyed for many years.

Thank you Mr C for your feedback. It's nice to see a couple settle so quickly into village life, continuing an active lifestyle.

My only experience is Independent Living At Richmond. I am happy here because it offers security, companionship and activities relevant to my age. I am able to eat in the restaurant when I feel like it and can use the laundry service and housekeeping when required. The gardens are beautiful, and the apartments are airy and modern. Day trips and weekly visits to supermarkets assist those who can no longer drive. In addition we have an intercom to enable us to keep in touch with other residents and all staff. This is very important particularly to people living alone. Knowing there is a back up service when required, be it a medical condition or a breakdown in household appliances etc. is very reassuring. Quality of life is vastly improved living at Richmond, compared to just managing in a large house, being lonely and unable to keep up the standards we were accustomed to, when we were younger and active. This often results in depression and accidents in the home with no support.

Thank you for the review Jean, it is always helpful to have feedback from a resident that lives in one of our retirement properties.

The care at Richmond can only be described as outstanding. The flatlet he has in the main building has been made to look like his old flat in Surrey and he has fantastic support from the Domiciliary Care team. He loves the place and particularly likes his three meals a day in the excellently staffed and delightful restaurant. He thinks it is like being on a cruise.

The home is well managed, the staff are polite, respectful and friendly and know all the residents well. The buildings are clean, tidy and smell beautiful. The receptionists are efficient and helpful to residents and visitors alike as are the maintenance staff and the gardening team.

Dad really enjoys the regularly organised programme of entertainment and social interaction.

Our family is delighted with Richmond Northampton and we are sure that there will be a queue to register us as the next generation at Richmond when or if the time comes. Great value for money and a wonderful solution to our problems with Dad.

Thank you for your kind words Dr G. Your Dad is a real gentleman, a fabulous personality and has very quickly found his place in our community. We are very pleased that you chose us to play such a significant part in his life.

Mum has settled well. The staff are very helpful & patient & kind both to her & myself!
Mum enjoys the excellent choice of food provided.
Mum has dementia, so it is a little difficult to rate the activities as she can't remember if she has been to them.
I understand that recently the dom care staff have made extra efforts to take Mum to events as Mum does get a little bored, again this is mainly due to her condition & no longer being able to read or concentrate on things; however staff often tell me that she enjoyed a certain event.
Mum has a lovely downstairs apartment with a west facing bay window, she loves to sit in this on sunny afternoons & look at the garden.

Thank you so much for your kind feedback. We're very pleased to hear that Mum has settled in so well. If you'd like to meet with her, please let us know and we can put you in touch.

Had a very restful and peaceful holiday. Thought the apartment was very comfortable but would have preferred a disabled toilet as when you are in a wheelchair it is very difficult to use a normal toilet. The gardens where kept very nice with plenty of seating. I thought the food in the restaurant was varied. Plenty of things to do if you want to, if you want to join in.

As a friend of someone who lives in Richmond, I must say I am very impressed. The staff are always very helpful and can't do enough for you even as a visitor. The food is always outstanding. I have been to the restaurant a few times to eat. There is so much for the residents to do if they want. I am really pleased to how my friend had settled in and she herself is really pleased. Just walking in and around the grounds and meeting people with their genuine smile on their faces says it all for me. Everyone is relaxed and is home to them. I am just happy that my friend has found a lovely place to live and knowing that she will have the great care if she needs it. I really enjoyed the east meets West night and the do they had for the Queens 90th party. It just proves that nothing is a problem for Richmond and make memories for all family, friends and residents.

We at Richmond Villages ensure that there is opportunities for friends and family to join in on various events and activities, it is nice to see you have taken part.

My parents are both approaching 90 years of age and suffer from severe mobility difficulties. When it became clear they could no longer remain in their own home and required some kind of assisted living, I visited most,if not all, of the appropriate care homes in the local area, and,in my opinion, none were better than Richmond Northampton. From the first moment, we received nothing but helpful, considerate service and, whilst my parents found it difficult at first to make the adjustment, it is plain to see that they are content, well looked after and receiving the services they currently need. Whilst cost is always an issue, to find a home where both of them can be together in the same rooms is very difficult,so we feel the move has been well worth while. The relationship we have with the staff and management is excellent and I always find that any problems are resolved in an efficient and friendly way.

My father became a resident in the care home after 4 happy years in the assisted living unit. He became increasingly unwell and following a stay in hospital he needed more care than could be given to him in the assisted living unit. The staff in the care home treated him with respect and dignity. In common with the staff of the assisted living unit they had endless patience and compassion and he seemed to relax and thrive under their care. Food was provided to suit his needs, it was plentiful and of good quality. He was encouraged to eat and drink frequently, treated as an individual and provided with soft foods as he had increasing difficulty swallowing. When it became evident that his condition was terminal the nursing staff did everything that they could to support us, his family as well as him, making his last days as comfortable as they possibly could. The surroundings at Richmond Care Home, as in the rest of the village, are very comfortable, clean and relaxed.

Many thanks for your kind words, your father was a great character with a wonderful sense of humour and a valued resident of Richmond Village.

My uncle lived in the retirement village from July 2015. He became ill and required more care so moved into Richmond Village Care home. The care was simply wonderful. The staff were excellent from beginning to end and still care.
So caring and professional, fulfilling his every wish and supporting and caring for the family too. Nothing was too much trouble and could not have been better in any way. An incredible place filled with excellent care until the end of my uncles life in February 2016.

We really appreciate you taking the time to write such a glowing review, Thank you so much.

After three years in an Assisted Living apartment my father was hospitalised and my mother needed a higher level of care and moved into The Meadows specialist facility. When my father was discharged from hospital he was moved onto the Care Floor as well. I cannot speak highly enough of the level and quality of care and the total focus on resident needs which is absolutely first class. Father passed away after six weeks and my mother has enjoyed a level of attention which, although rarely seen, is always in evidence at Richmond Northampton. Particularly, communication is excellent and as well as being totally confident her care needs are being met, I am always kept up to date on any issues by the staff. Visits are a pleasure and the cheerful, easy going, albeit totally professional, approach is always evident from every member of staff. In my opinion, there could be nowhere better for my mother to live.

Not only am I responsible for the initial introduction but also the after sales care of our residents. It is a priority but it is also self rewarding to know that our residents and families are satisfied and happy with the service we as a team provide.
