Mother has been a resident for 6 years and is 96. She has suffered from falls, UTIs, and a bout of pneumonia. There are no actual 'nursing staff' employed by the Home which worries me. I have always been kept informed of any health issues she has. The home is always clean and the food seems good. She
has never been one to join in but the cost of the trips is so expensive that after all these years, I cannot afford them on top of hair and chiropody appointments, buying all her clothes and toiletries, etc. There have been times when I have needed a member of staff to help me and no one has been available. My main gripe is the state of her wardrobe as most of her clothes are stuffed into drawers or on the floor and also the loss of clothes and personal belongings. Stolen might be a better word!
The laundry destroys a lot of items.
The senior staff deserve a medal but I see a lot of lower grades on their phones all the time. The constant change of managers hasn't helped.

Mum has been a resident at Bruce Lodge for almost three years now and although there have been some difficult times (particularly through COVID restrictions) I cannot fault the Care staff highly enough. They are extremely caring and considerate and treat my Mum with dignity and respect. The same can
not be said of the Management Team over the last year to 18 months, and communication from senior management has been very poor. Thankfully this now appears to have been addressed and I am happy to report that since the interim manager and new administrator took over, there has already been a significant improvement.
Mum's room is always clean and tidy and the food cannot be faulted. Mum has been on one trip since being in Bruce Lodge and hopefully she will be involved in more in the future.

I find Bruce Lodge to be an excellent care home. The staff are excellent and really care for the residents with possibly a couple of exceptions. The present manager is excellent together with her deputies who are all very friendly and approachable. Any issues are dealt with quickly and with utmost care.
The food appears to be of good quality. Could possibly be more in way of ‘entertainment’ as such to keep residents alert. Maybe better care of the laundry could be had but very difficult with residents' care needs. I would highly recommend Bruce Lodge.

My sister was recently admitted to Bruce Lodge and I cannot thank all the staff enough for their amazing care. Everyone treated my sister with the utmost kindness, care and respect and all very friendly, she settled in very well. Food was very good and plenty on offer. Rooms excellent and very clean.
I would highly recommend Bruce Lodge to family and friends for their parents/relatives. Nice surroundings. Thanks again to your wonderful caring staff.

My mum has been a resident for 4 years, and going Bruce Lodge has a daycare centre, before that for 4 years. I find The staff do their utmost to look after my mum, everyone’s so very nice, and really do look after my mum. They can't do enough for her, and would never want my mum to be anywhere else.
All the staff are very professional in what they do, there has been emergency times. When my mum had a mini stroke, or fallen out of bed, staff have gone above and beyond, to call an ambulance, and get them there straight away to care for my mum in time. The activity Elves who work within Bruce Lodge, do a great job too. They do loads activities, and set great shows up at the home, and great day trips out, and always do activities with my mum. I haven't got any bad words to say at all, it’s a pleasure to get to know all the team. All the management, and all the care assistants and Activity Elves, well done to you all you need medals. Thank you.

My mum was admitted to the Discharge to Assess Unit after leaving hospital. During this time it became evident that she would require full-time care. After viewing several other homes which weren't suitable, I was very pleased when a full-time place became available at Bruce Lodge, especially as Mum
had got to know many of the staff and the place was familiar to her. She has a nice room overlooking the garden.
The place is always clean. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and always keep me up-to-date.
The food is adequate. There are beautiful outdoor spaces, although these could be maintained much better than they are. There is the added bonus of parks on the doorstep, which is ideal for taking Mum out in her wheelchair.
I was extremely concerned about my mum going into a care home, but after some initial difficulties, I am very happy with the care she receives.
Thank you to everyone at Bruce Lodge.

My sister became a permanent resident at Bruce Lodge over a year ago. Since then she has improved greatly physically with good food, made on the premises, and the care given. Although her dementia has progressed considerably, she is kept occupied and stimulated with regular activities at Bruce Lodge,
occasional walks in the park, and outings, all of which she enjoys. My consent is always sought for out of premises events and she has a monthly one to one care day.
As I live very far away, I am unable visit her often, but I keep in touch with her via video chats at least once a week, and more often when possible, organised by her carers. On these occasions, she is always nicely turned out, nails colourfully polished and is chatty and cheerful. I spent 7 weeks with her last year to help her settle in and the management and staff could not have been more helpful. The premises are spotless. I am happy with the care that Bruce Lodge is providing for my sister.

Thank you to the kind and caring staff at Bruce Lodge who have looked after and helped my brother so much, offering care, comfort and friendship whenever he gets upset and confused. His room is always spotlessly clean. The only downside has been the confusion with his clothing which I believe has now

Awful miserable place.
Staff are miserable. Every time you walk through any sitting rooms the staff are sat with their head in their hands or on the 'work' phones updating!
No atmosphere. Clothes go missing every day - Residents aren't watched or respected and are not even talked to.
Rooms are basic
- mattress thin, drawers - handles are falling off.

Senior Management is despicable and incompetent, won't put service users' needs first, and won't respect relatives' wishes or views. Items and clothing go missing on a daily basis, and the laundry system is in tatters (not managed). Service users being dressed in other people's underwear and clothes
is not acceptable. There is no face-to-face interaction between the senior Manager and relatives when visiting, they just walk in and out, a simple hello or goodbye would be nice.

Hello to all the great team at Bruce Lodge Care Home, this is just an update on Mum, who was with you for 3.5 months, up until late August. Mum has continued to do well, all things considered, and we are proceeding in a happy-go-lucky fashion. Mum has, thankfully, not fallen over since she returned
home, so a big thank you for all the efforts made by the great physios both physiotherapist and occupational therapist. I shall presently be popping over again just to say hello to the gang and distribute yet more copious amounts of treats. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year. If you can't afford a turkey this year, then there are plenty of Pigeons around - just grab a net! Ho, Ho, Ho.

Mum has been a resident now for three months - originally in the discharge to Assess unit and more recently in the main part of the home. I cannot fault the care Mum has received from the moment she arrived. The staff are constantly vigilant and keep me well informed of any changes to Mum's health.
They are always welcoming and go above and beyond what is required to ensure that I feel included in all aspects of her care. There have been minor issues regarding temporary loss of clothing (and wearing things that do not belong to her) - but she always looks clean, neat and tidy. Mum has really settled well and enjoys the activities which are regularly provided. I now feel that I can relax knowing Mum is so well cared for.

We have not been told about a recent illness (chest infection) and upon visiting, our relative was in wet clothing and was not changed into dry clothes (one can but hope) until after we had left. In addition, personal and sentimental items have gone missing and quite frankly no one cares. Nothing but
issues since moving into Bruce Lodge. Appalling doesn't quite cover it. We expect, for the price, high-quality care. Never seen or experienced it here. Shocking. Would give 0 stars if I could on care, dignity, management, safety, and value for money.
Reply from Megan Lachevre, Care Home Manager at Bruce LodgeWe are very proud of Bruce Lodges high score for quality of care on carehome.co.uk, so we are disappointed that you feel your loved one has not had the same experience.
We had fully investigated the matters mentioned, profusely apologised for your family not being made aware of his chest infection, and communicated the relevant actions that have been taken, so we had considered this matter taken care of prior to your review.
We understand that your relative was wet at the end of your visit, however, this was not the case when he was dressed and brought to meet you, and this is documented on our PCS system. We would ask that you alert us at the time if this happens again as it was not brought to our attention on the day.
We will continue to communicate with you to ensure you are satisfied with the care your loved one receives by the team at Bruce Lodge.

I couldn’t speak highly enough of the care and services my gran is receiving at Bruce Lodge. Living overseas while she is there, I was concerned for her well-being, but having built a relationship with the lady who looks after the emotional welfare of the residents, keeping them engaged and entertained.
I am totally reassured that she is being well looked after. She has gone above and beyond to make my gran feel loved and welcomed, including her in various activities and showing a personal touch with hugs and reassurance. She has facilitated multiple video chats between us and took it upon herself to ask for and print out my gran’s favourite family pictures for her to look at in her room. I see my gran’s face light up when she is around, giving her a big hug, and it gives me peace of mind that she feels settled and loved at Bruce Lodge, you are a beautiful person inside and out. Thank you to you and to all the other amazing staff at Bruce Lodge - you’re doing a great job!

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.750)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.750) out of 10 for Bruce Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.750 for Bruce Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (182 Excellents x 5) + (49 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 236 Ratings = 4.75
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bruce Lodge is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 66 registered maximum number of service users is 13.2, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
