My dad spent many years in Shepley House and was cared for brilliantly, was so happy when 7 years later we had to make the decision to put Mum in care and Shepley had a room for her. Many of the lovely staff are still here and it is just like we have never been away. Mum has settled really well and
is looked after with care and dignity. Massive big thanks to everyone.

Mum seems to have settled well and looks comfortable when she is visited. Things do go missing from her room I now know and understand that this can't be helped. All the staff I have met or seen have been helpful and dealt with my mum in a respectful and dignified manner.
Reply from Jon Horan, Home Manager at Shepley HouseThank you for your review of Shepley House. We appreciate your understanding with regard to missing items, which we always do our best to locate. We will pass on your kind words about the care and dignity your mum has received to our wider staff team.'

I’m not going to say in detail on here, but I do not recommend this home. I took my mother out last Sunday when I visited, without warning, and no one has even called me to ask why! Eight days have passed, if I were the manager I’d want to know why. I now have my 92-year-old mother at home with me.
Reply from Jon Horan, Home Manager at Shepley HouseThank you for your comments, we have received your concern and we are investigating. However, we have tried to contact your mother’s next of kin since her departure from the home, and have had no response. We also know that you have contacted our local social worker team who in turn contacted us; they have fully briefed us about the reasons for your mother leaving the home. We will communicate with the social worker when we have an outcome to your concerns.

My mum has been a resident at Shepley House for two and a half years now, and in that time, we have experienced the full range of what it has been like as a resident and as a family member. Shepley went through a very difficult time with management changes and staff changes. At one point, it felt like
there was a new manager every week! The home is currently being run by a new manager, who is excellent. He listens to his residents, his staff and to families of residents. He will do whatever he can to accommodate any additional needs your loved one may have. Since he has been in charge, there is now a full complement of staff on the books, the agency is only being used in absolute emergencies, the residents have loads of activities and trips to keep them entertained, and the home has improved no end. It may look old and a bit tired at times, but it is clean, welcoming and has a very caring environment which is clear from when you enter the home. Mum is extremely happy now. Well done, Shepley

The staff treat the residents with compassion and care. The manager and the team run the home where the resident's needs are the utmost priority. Efforts are made to create a nice atmosphere in the home. It's comforting to know my wife is being looked after. Also, I am made welcome on my visits to be
with her.

I find Shepley House great! The staff are very friendly and attentive and actually appear to enjoy their job.
The management team genuinely listen to what you have to say and actively encourage you to discuss any questions the residents may have, which is excellent. The office side is run by one member
of staff, who has every duty at her fingertips - excellent.
Shepley House - ten out of ten! Keep doing what you are doing.

Sheply is caring for both my mum and dad, who've been residents for over two years now. The team at Sheply have continued to give the best care for them both consistently, and as their needs have changed (both have dementia), they have strived to always do the best for them both and to give Mum and
Dad the best care possible.
We have, as a family, always been made to feel both welcomed and included in their care.
All the team at Sheply are amazing, and we've got to know them all well and consider them to be good friends to us, Mum and Dad.
Sheply is a safe and friendly environment.
Thanks to all the team.

Good friendly staff, but not enough of the of them. Excellent cleanliness all around the home.
Very informative and helpful office staff.
Could do with more motivation for the residents.
Residents not always wearing their own clothes - laundry staff?
Generally, a happy atmosphere.

This review is based on my mum's respite experience at Shepley House for seven weeks up to 29/01/22.
Mum has early-stage dementia but had some falls that resulted in her needing respite care.
When she arrived at Shepley from the hospital for her pre-organised admission, she was refused as Shepley
had insufficient staff available and so was returned to the hospital.
Mum complained that the standard of the food deteriorated shortly after her arrival.
When I raised my mum's concerns it transpired that the positions of Home Manager and Activities Co-ordinator were both vacant and they were using agency chefs. This would explain why mum complained of a lack of mental and physical stimulation, poor food, and a lack of organisation.
We gave Shepley five days notice that we were moving mum and even confirmed the time, she was left in her room with nothing packed or prepared. They even forgot to provide her medication!
She has stressed that the carers were absolutely lovely but they seemed overstretched.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.848)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.848) out of 10 for Shepley House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 27 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.848 for Shepley House is calculated as follows: ( (280 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 323 Ratings = 4.848
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shepley House is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
