Overall Experience

My mother has been at Headingley Hall for nearly seven years and has been extremely happy there. The staff are kind, attentive and take the trouble to understand each resident's individual quirks. The accommodation is of a high standard and the food is tasty and varied. There is also a wide range of activities and outings for residents to choose from. The whole team, both on the care and the admin side, are efficient, friendly and responsive both to residents and their families. This has been especially important to me as we live far away. In summary, I highly recommend this care home.

Headingley Hall was recommended to me as a place my Mum could stay for respite care. When we first looked around we found all the staff very friendly and a very relaxed atmosphere. Following my Mum's week stay I was very impressed with the kindness they all showed towards my Mum and their attentiveness to all her needs.

My father died at Headingley Hall April 2019. Words are inadequate to describe the end of life care given to my dad and the whole family with care, compassion, kindness and utmost respect. We were able to give my beloved dad a good death, medical support and the sheer professionalism of the whole team wrapped itself around dad and family working as a team we helped dad have a peaceful death.

Headingley Hall was recommended to me by a neighbour as a place to go for convalescence following surgery. I was most impressed with the calm, relaxed and friendly environment.
My stay lasted 6 days and certainly allowed me to rest and recuperate after a big operation.

The staff promptly alerted NHS staff to deal with any problems I had. I was most impressed with their kindness and support. What a superb team and all seemed happy in their work which is key to providing a good service.

I recently visited the home to see a friend of my grandfathers; and would like to commend yourselves and your staff on the standard of care.

In particular, I would like to praise the:-
activity leader
senior care assistant
deputy manager

2 certain care assistant's

For their attentiveness to detail and the quality of care given.

The staff at Headingley Hall clearly love their jobs and the residents, but with these especially it was evident that they go above and beyond for the people in their care.

Care is a very challenging job at the best of times, and I cannot commend the staff here highly enough.

I hope this message gets passed along to them to show their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.

The end of life care for my father at Headingley Hall was everything you would want for your loved one and their family. Dad has spent time over the last seven years at Headingley Hall and full time from March 2017. Dad became ill and had been in hospital for several weeks and was thought well enough to leave; the manager at Headingley Hall was adamant that he return home to them. It became clear that Dad had put all his energy into getting home as he quickly deteriorated. Dad lived for a week, but what a wonderful week!

Cared for with love and respect by his extended family of carers. We spent as much time with Dad as possible and was fed and cared for by the wonderful staff team throughout the week.

We could not be happier with the care afforded to my mother. She has been made to feel very welcome. This is the second relative we have had living in Headingley Hall. From the moment you walk in the front door one is impressed by the atmosphere of the house. The staff are omnipresent, the residents are calm and content and nothing is too much trouble for anyone.

The furnishings are of high quality. The rooms are well furnished and homely. The food is good, the home is well managed and the staff and residents are all happy and earn mutual respect.

I spent several weeks at Headingley Hall convalescing after surgery. From the outset, I was greatly impressed by the friendliness, approachability and competence of the home's care staff. I was given every support and assistance, always with good grace and efficiency. What held true for the care staff applied equally to the other staff. Housekeeping and related functions were performed to a very high standard, with considerable attention given to cleanliness and hygiene. Laundry was dealt with promptly and returned in pristine condition. Reception staff were charming and very helpful, management responsive, considerate and most efficient. Meals were appetizing and nutritious, with plenty of choice. The dining room, like the other communal areas, was light, airy and welcoming. Meals were supplemented by refreshments at regular intervals. Those wishing to participate had access to a wide range of activities. Visitors were always made welcome. My room was bright, comfortable and well-equipped. The home is an attractive building, set in most pleasant gardens. For me, the most appealing features of a home which has so many commendable aspects were the warmth and proficiency of its staff. Their competence, abundant good nature and kindness, cheerful demeanour and ready smiles are assets beyond price.

I came to Headingley Hall in the first occasion as a respite patient after a knee replacement. I liked the care, the atmosphere very much. So when it became obvious that I needed fulltime care. I came again on respite trips and 2 visits to other care homes. I chose to come full time to Headingley Hall because it was and is the best!

Overall Experience

Our mother recently celebrated her 101st birthday with an enjoyable party at Headingley Hall. The staff made the whole day really special for her and we haven’t seen her so happy since before she was widowed over five years ago. This speaks volumes for the attitude and ethos of this wonderfully caring home.

We had no idea that any establishment could manage to offer the level of care she is receiving. In the year she has been a resident her health, unlike one might expect for someone of her age, has considerably improved. From living in her own home and having visiting carers there has been a marked difference in every way.

Headingley Hall is a prime example of a caring home which is known locally by reputation as a first-class establishment which lives up to expectations from caring, attentive professional staff to thoughtful catering.

The Hall’s physical appearance both outside and inside is that of a 5-star hotel and is of reality for residents actually living there.

My mother has lived at Headingley Hall for 8 years. Everyone works tirelessly to make Headingley Hall my mother's home. Buildings are historic with sympathetic additions: gardens are great and shops adjacent. Headingley Hall looks and feels like a small hotel, you are welcomed by a very friendly lady in a plush reception area, adjacent to a residents lounge and dining room, with a bar. I visit whenever I wish, welcomed with coffee near the kitchen. The kitchen receives daily deliveries of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat: meals are varied and cooked from scratch. The facilities are excellent, the staff are even better.

Staff and management turnover is low: I always meet familiar faces, that is even more important for residents. My mother is frail at 92, and staff go out of their way to talk with her and encourage her. I encourage anyone requiring care, for themselves or relatives, to visit Headingley Hall. In my experience, it speaks for itself: it is a real home to residents and relatives, in every way.

Dad was in Headingley Hall for a year and we couldn't have asked for him to be anywhere better. The staff cared for Dad like he was their own. He always said the staff were 'top rate'. We only ever saw staff being kind and respectful to residents and the senior staff were always happy to discuss anything we wanted to talk about. In particular, they were excellent at keeping us informed, especially towards the end of Dad's life when they had to call the GP out on a number of occasions. They rang us to tell us what was happening and it was a huge weight off our minds to know that he was being properly looked after. He complained about the food but I think that was as much him as the food. There were lots of different activities on offer (not that he wanted to take part!). Not only did they know Dad and his preferences, and catered for them, they knew us too. The staff weren't just doing a job - they genuinely cared. They will miss him - and we will miss them.

Overall Experience
My mother was treated with dignity and patience. She was addressed by the name she wanted to be known as and I never heard any other name used.
Staff checked on my mother at least 8 times in a day to bring medications, meals and water, newspaper, to ascertain activity involvement and housekeeping.
Medications - It was not ensured that my mother took her medications (which she always did) but in other situations, this may be a problem.
Cleanliness of environment - The room was kept to a clean standard. The dining room was clean, the tables laid with clean table cloths. Table flowers would have been nice to see as a table talking point
Food - Not very inspiring. This is the only area I would like to see improved with better presentation and a more varied menu.

Staff attitude - very comforting to know all staff were caring and genuinely interested. It was not evident if there were staff issues as all staff were professional and smiling.

Thank you for your kind comments made. I would like to respond to some of the areas you have spoken about. Further to a recent Resident's Forum, your mother did comment about table flowers and we have noted this and are looking at purchasing table decorations/flowers.

Six months into my mother's residency and we are both very satisfied with every aspect of the home. The building has character and is well maintained including a lovely garden and plenty of communal/visiting spaces. The staff are unfailingly friendly and compassionate with readily accessible managers who respond efficiently to any requests or concerns. Mum is settled very well and medical attention when required has always been quick with excellent links to nearby medical centre. The standard of catering is very high with interesting dishes and ingredients on offer as well as traditional fayre. The home is also well located for nearby shops/cafes.

Charlie Render
Charlie RenderJob Title:Care Manager, Headingley Hall Care HomeJoined: 2010

I started working in care 24 years ago when I was 16 years old as a weekend job whilst studying for my A-levels.

I progressed into working with elderly adults with learning difficulties and led a group of young adults with Down Syndrome to work within the care industry themselves, supporting them with a career in catering and social care.

I left that role to attend University in Leeds, where I studied Interdisciplinary English Literature and History.

After a brief stint working in finance, I made a decision to return to care and remain in Leeds, and before I knew it, I gained a job at Headingley Hall 14 years ago and have never looked back.

I started as a night care assistant before progressing into a Senior Carer role. This made me realise that this was my chosen profession. Seeing the difference I could make in someone's life by ensuring their health and well-being were as supported as possible gave me satisfaction.

I discovered a keen taste for liaising and providing support to all health professionals who visited Headingley Hall. By working alongside the health professionals and gaining their knowledge and experience, I was able to review our service users with a holistic approach and ensure care remained person-centred.

Since then, I progressed to the Deputy Manager role at Headingley Hall and completed my Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

My learning continues every day, and I continue to love the challenges each day throws at me. I am excited about the opportunity to lead as Interim Manager, and I hope my future continues to progress within the care sector.
