Some nurses are excellent. Extremely friendly and helpful. A huge thank you.

One member of staff, in particular, is outstanding. Goes above and beyond for his patients, being firm and honest when needed. Connected well with my grandfather. A true hero. Has made some dark days manageable. This member of staff should be extremely proud. Thank you.

Welcoming and very friendly. Always feel comfortable when visiting and the care provided to my dad has been excellent. Staff are attentive and Dad's respite, post-discharge from hospital, and improvement in his condition improved enormously over the last few weeks. Thank you all.

Nothing is too much trouble. The peace of mind that Mum is in a wonderful environment, being cared for by lovely staff is welcome. The nursing staff, in particular, on the nursing floor provide care and compassion to my mum who has complex health needs. I know when I leave that Mum is in safe hands with a team of people that go above and beyond for her and that's all that matters.

My husband was transferred to Birchlands Care Home for end-of-life care. The team were amazing. Treated him and family/visitors with utmost respect and dignity. Fantastic care. Can't speak highly enough of all the staff caring for him, including nurses, care assistants, domestic and administration. My husband was very calm and peaceful, thanks to the environment and their care.

My mum had to leave another care home in York having lived there with dementia for four years. We received four weeks' notice that they would be permanently closing in January 2024. Panic stations! Mum arrived at Birchlands Care Home on the 13th of December 2023, simply a blessing in disguise. Mum has been very warmly welcomed and has received far superior care in the few short weeks she has been there!

The staff not only cared for my husband but also for the family and friends who visited. I commend all the staff, admin, cleaners, carers and nurses who always had the time for us. I felt I could return home knowing my husband was well looked after and his needs met. Empathy and understanding of who my husband was ensured his final weeks of life were the best they could be, thank you.

The service at Birchlands was caring and thoughtful. The chef went the extra mile to produce meals that my husband would eat. The carers were excellent and tried to help my husband's stay be as good as could be. End of life was supported with medication and a nurse checking on hum regularly. The staff tried to accommodate all my requests. I cannot fault the home or staff.

You have a special environment at the home at a difficult time for families. I could not wish for my aunty to have had her final days. Every member of the time is warm, always a smile, welcoming to my aunties visitors and to my aunty.

The home will always have a special place in my heart - thank you to everyone.

My mother was transferred to Birchlands Care Home in the last four days of her life, as we were unable to continue to care for her at home as she needed nursing support. I was devastated and felt that I was letting her down but as soon as we arrived all my concerns were allayed. The staff were amazing, caring and professional and provided me with great support in the last two days of her life. I was so pleased that she was in their care and will always be grateful to them for the dignity and kindness that they gave her. I realised the day after she arrived that actually her being there was the best decision I made.

My mother was transferred to Birchlands Care Home to receive palliative care from the 8th to the 14th of September 2023.

My mother-in-law was a resident for seven years and passed away on 27/07/2023 at the age of 101.
She was well looked after in this time with the exception of once, which was quickly handled by the manager.

My mother-in-law was not the easiest to look after in the latter year or so but at 101, who is? Well done Birchlands Care Home and all who sail in her.

Since my aunt entered the home in August 2021, she has, on the whole, been happy with her circumstances. We have found the nursing care she receives has been good, bearing in mind she can be difficult at times! Whilst we appreciate the difficulties of hiring and retaining carers, she sometimes cannot understand the lack of carers. However, our main area of concern is that she is not eating the meals prepared for her and this is obviously affecting her health. We feel that whilst this could be difficult for catering staff, a little more individual attention could be provided for her needs and encourage her to eat.

Reply from Jackie Calpin, Manager at Birchlands Care Home

Thank you for this review. I am terribly sorry that this has happened and can assure you that I speak with your aunt several times weekly but have not been made aware of any issue. We do not have staff shortages and do not use agencies for this reason.

I will see your aunt today and do...

Review from Mike K (Son of Resident) published on 7 September 2022 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

The level of care for my dad over the past six months has been excellent. The staff really look after the residents engaging with them and treating them with dignity and respect, there are regular activities to suit all who are encouraged to partake but if like my dad just wants to sit on the sidelines and watch and take it all in that's fine too.

I have visited my dad in Birchlands regularly over the past 6 months and it is always spotlessly clean and nothing is too much trouble, he became very frail in his last few weeks but knowing he was so well looked after and ended his days in the most dignified way possible is testament to the dedication of a team who clearly value working there and I extend a heartfelt thank you to them all.
