Although it is early days as my mother only moved in March 2017, she seems to have settled in well.
She is still confused about some aspects of her life, she is now much happier. Her care is very good and is now enjoying the activities due to the entertainment manager starting at the beginning of May.
When we visit, we find all the staff very happy and helpful.
Her only problem is weight loss and her lack of appetite, which has been addressed with protein supplements.

Overall, we are very pleased with mum's progress and are content that she is in good hands.

Reply from Donna Wass, Manager at Guisborough Manor

Our activity coordinator commenced employment on 02/05/17 and has introduced a full range of activities for all our residents, this has been a great success and we are receiving good feedback from all our residents. We hope mum continues to enjoy all the new activities that are planned.

I am writing on behalf of my Mam who spent 2 weeks in Guisborough Manor on respite care. Mam has dementia and still lives at home with her husband - both are elderly. I found the staff very attentive, her room was basic but I noticed other long-stay residents had some home furnishings in their rooms. There's three rooms plus a dining room for the residents to sit in. Two of the rooms with a TV in so plenty of places to sit. Loved the idea of original brightly painted front doors on each bedroom. The activities co-ordinator was amazing and had a lovely friendly approach with the residents. The staff were very helpful and were there for me as well as Mam. I found comfort in knowing she was safe, warm and well fed.

My sister lived at Guisborough Manor from July 2011 until March 2017 when she died. When she was fairly independent the staff supported her to live the lifestyle she had enjoyed at her own bungalow, including going to bed at 11pm!. She and family were able to come and go freely and we often took Indian meals, fish and chips or treats from Sainsbury's in for her to enjoy with her wine from the small fridge in her room.
She chose not to join in the activities organised within the home but they are certainly extensive, including outings for meals etc.
Last summer, after being diagnosed with cancer and spending 3 weeks in hospital we were unsure whether the staff could look after her at Guisborough Manor. However, they ensured us that they could, and would, and indeed they cared for her, as well as she could have been looked after anywhere.
She regarded Guisborough as her 'home' and wanted to stay there, amongst the staff who became her friends, until she died.
With the assistance of the local surgery doctors and district nurses, the staff did a superb job in looking after all her needs.

Well done Guisborough Manor!

The love, care, compassion shown by the care team to both mum and all the family was 5++ star rating. Over the 6 years she was resident in Guisborough Manor she gained new life, new friends and fun experiences. The social side surpassed all expectations, as did the care and love by everyone from the cleaners , care team and the management, nothing was too much trouble. Sadly she is no longer with us, however the superior loving professional care given to her was on the highest level.

Mam is being cared for by the best care team you could wish for from top to bottom, I should not put bottom because they are all top class to us, we cannot complain about anything, the whole care team are so genuinely warm and professional with the way and deal with mam's needs.
From the moment Mam, my sister and I entered the home we knew that it was the one, it felt warm, calm and friendly, the manager greeted us with genuine warmth and understanding, she gave a tour and introduced us to all the staff, we instantly arranged to move Mam in that day.
Mam has now been in the home on the EMI floor for exactly one year and I can honestly say it was the hardest but easiest decision we have had to make, Mam's care is second to none.

We have no qualms with recommending this home and care provider at all, in fact if the situation ever arises we have left instructions to arrange our move into the home.

All the staff deserve a SPECIAL 5* mentioning for their care, dedication, patience and understanding that they give to all the residents that I have noted whilst visiting my sister in law. I take my wife twice a month to see her sister, we live at York and travel to see her as frequently as possible. Each and every time we call at varying times we see and are met with overwhelming genuine care and understanding with a "nothing is to much trouble for these wonderful hard working carers" with wonderful activities, sing along sessions, day outings being regularly arranged up to activate their minds and bodies of residents who through no fault of their own have become very dependent on other to provide them with a quality of life that they so justly deserve, May God bless them all.

Alison Corner
Alison CornerJob Title:Registered ManagerJoined: 2019

Alison's career started as a student nurse at Scarborough General Hospital before moving into adult social care after leaving college. Alison explains "I think care was always a part of my childhood, I don’t think I can remember a time when it wasn’t . My nana lived with my family and my mum cared for her throughout the latter stages of her life. I completed my school work experience at the Stead Memorial Hospital and I continued as a volunteer when my placement finished . The staff there were fantastic and allowed me to participate in lots of duties. This was what I wanted, this was what I needed to do. I wanted to make people smile when they felt sad, laugh when they felt like crying, comfort them when they were in pain, listen when they needed to speak and speak for them when they no longer could. This was and still is my purpose." Alison has been the registered manager at Guisborough Manor since February 2019. She is proud of attaining her NVQ 5 In Leadership and Management for Health and Social Care which enables her to support and mentor current and future care staff to enrich the lives of the residents in our care. When asked about her vision for Guisborough Manor, Alison says "Guisborough Manor is not just a care home, it is “Your home” as soon as you walk through the door. From the subtle décor to the panoramic views, the fabulous care staff to the tasty delights that come from our kitchen. This is how I want our home to continue, making our ladies and gentlemen feel valued, supported, safe, loved and cared for to the highest level."
