Westerleigh Care Home is situated in Stanley, County Durham, close to the local market. An ex-colliery village, Stanley has a very friendly, warm and close-knit community feel to it.

The staff at Westerleigh are warm and friendly and visitors comment on how welcoming they are. Their interaction with residents is very ‘hands-on’ and they treat them like their own family - which includes hugs and kisses. It is genuinely true to say that their residents are loved.

A lot of emphasis is placed on activities to keep the residents stimulated, with things like exercises, excursions, picnics, movie night, dominoes and painting. There is a local market every Thursday which some residents like to attend and a few go to the pub now and then.

Staff, like to build a close relationship with residents', families and friends and have an open door policy for them.

For end-of-life residents, they have a special room where families can stay overnight with their loved one.

The residents also get involved in the running of the home and help with the post, gardening and many other activities. There is a residents’ committee and a Westerleigh newsletter.

Links with the community are encouraged and groups come in from local schools, colleges and churches.

The home has a very homely atmosphere. During the time my mother was there I did not have any concerns. She was on respite, in a room available at the time but we have now managed to secure a better room for her. She will now be going in the home permanently. I do not have any issues about the care at the home. I did notice some clothes she was wearing did not belong to her so maybe a little more assistance when dressing would help. The staff and the manager were very friendly and very helpful. Nothing has been an issue.

Dear Susan, we are always actively looking at ways to improve our service for our residents so I would like to thank you kindly for your review and comments, which I shall take forward and discuss with my team.

On behalf of all of the staff at Westerleigh, I would like to welcome your mum, and hope that she will be very happy in her new home.

Called and spoke with the manageress about a room for my uncle, she was very understanding and helpful, she gave us a 'tour' of the home and we were very impressed by the high standard shown. As a result my uncle is going into stay for his care.

I am happy living at Westerleigh and there have been some good changes since management changed. Overall its a good place to live.

I don't leave my room very often but I do feel very safe and secure. I know the staff are here to help and i get on with everyone.

Friendly, polite. I enjoy coming, we do different things. If I don't like the menu they would always do something to suit me. Don't know home manager. She never speaks.
