My Mum has recently become a full time resident of Elderwood Care home. We chose it because of the friendly staff, most of whom have been employees for a long time. The staff always speak directly to Mum, not through us and are very kind and helpful.
On admission everyone introduced themselves to
Mum, including the chef and nothing is too much trouble.
The staff are also patient and kind to me, as after years of taking care of Mum, it is hard for me to reliquish control of her care, and they get that!
Her room is spotless and warm, her clothes are always clean and she is as happy to be looked after.
The food is plentiful and of good quality and I can now sleep at night knowing my Mum is being cared for 24/7

My 93 year old aunt has dementia and has been a resident at Elderwood for over 2 years now. She has a comfortable cosy ensuite room, good food, entertainment if she wants it and most of all wonderful caring staff who look after her very well.
We are not local ro the area and visited several care
homes before we found Elderwood. We were immediately impressed by the lovely homely decor and the friendly welcoming staff. Anne Marie gave us a guided tour of the facilities and it was eye-opening just observing how the staff were interacting so naturally with other residents, so friendly, helpful and caring. The atmosphere was lovely and the residents smiling faces and happy banter they were giving back spoke volumes.
We had not found that in any of the other places we had seen.

It has been the best decision we have made for my aunt. She is very settled there and all credit must go to the wonderful staff at Elderwood who make an exceptional team.

Review of Elderwood:
Aunt has been a resident for over a year now and we found the home to be very welcoming from the first visit. We were shown around and given a full explanation of the set up, routines , rooms etc.
My aunt quickly settled in and the caring staff are very friendly and provide excellent
care for her. The rooms and facilities are good and there are activities throughout the week which she can participate in. She loves anything musical/singing and there are quite a few sessions around this. The hairdresser and manicures available each week go down very well and she is kept very clean, smart and presentable. No complaints here :-)

Since my nearly 100 year old mother with dementia moved into Elderwood Care Home in Darlington 2 years ago she has flourished with the care she has received. the staff are attentive and friendly and look after mother and the other residents very well. There are always activities such as bingo, singing,
quizzes etc to keep you entertained . Also at meal times the choice and quality of the food makes me very envious. So overall it is an excellent home to move to in your later years.

We had a terrible time with emergency respite in another care home, so we visited lots of care homes so we weren't in that position again. Elderwood was our first choice, felt homely, carpets kept the noise to minimum, straight corridors (nowhere to hide or get lost), all staff spoke to us and when
the time came Dad was welcomed with open arms. Although Dad was only there for a month, the care, dignity, dedication, and overall friendliness of everyone was amazing. We were all made to feel so welcome, encouraged to be part of Dad's life and to ask questions. Mam was always welcomed and offered to attend events, activities and even Christmas dinner. Everywhere was clean, additional care supports (like a toilet frame) were given without us having to ask, laundry kept clean and cloths never lost. Overall everything and everyone were amazing, which reflected in the atmosphere. We as a family feel so grateful and appreciative we found such a home from home for dad.

My wife sadly passed away in Elderwood care home this year after 6 years in their care, I have nothing but praise for the way my wife was cared for by the staff of Elderwood during her time at the home. My wife was suffering from dymensia so needed some special help and she received this in spades from
the staff of Elderwood. If I ever need to go into a care home I would like to think that I would be cared for in Elderwood. Thank you to all staff at Elderwood. My wife was always kept clean and tidy, the food was good quality , both her clothes and room was always clean and tidy.

My husband has been in Elderwood for 2 years, and I have never known such a dedicated staff and management. They are the most helpful, pleasant and caring people you could wish for to look after someone you love. When I go home I never have to think how he is being looked after because I know they
all care. 100%.

After transferring my aunt from Sheffield to Darlington we feel that she enjoyed the care/nursing home a lot better than where she had been, she was always talking about how much nicer and more pleasant the atmosphere was, as she felt more than just a number, she couldn't believe the choice in food
and the number of activities that was also available to her she really enjoyed her time here. We also feel she was treated with dignity and respect from all the staff for which we are so thankful.

Our sister was in this care home for respite for approximately 8 weeks following a stroke and dementia. We as a family cannot praise the staff enough for the care and compassion that was given to her, our sister absolutely loved it and settled in well, we honestly can't thank you enough for your support
and would recommend.

My mam has been in this care home since September 2024 after reviewing many care homes I found that this care home suited her, the location, everything. The accommodation that they provide is absolutely perfect for my mam it was like home from home she settled in amazing clean and maintained clean everyday.
Friendly staff that are there for her every needs. Food she like which for my mam was a bonus she is very fussy in what she eats. Always some kind of activity entertainment going on every day which is your choice if you want to participate.

Our dad was admitted to Elderwood Care Home in October 2024 and remained in their Care until 11th February 2025 with Parkinson's. He had given up on life due to a family tragedy but the moment we stepped through the doors we knew this would be the place to nurse him back to health. From the Management
Staff, Team-Leaders, Day-time and Night-time carers, the Cleaners and the Maintenance man, they always showed him and ourselves the upmost respect and professionalism, love and kindness. As a result of the care and support he received whilst at Elderwood he has managed to return to his home to live semi-independently. As a family we would like to thank all the staff for giving us our dad back. We would highly recommend Elderwood Care Home and if we could give it a 10 star review we would. So don't let the Sun catch You Crying.

Dad took very poorly in December 2024 and chose to remain at Elderwood until he passed away on 2nd January 2025. The care, dignity and support given to him and our family was second to none. Every member of showed genuine love and compassion. Carers mopped his brow, held his hand, stroked his forehead
and whispered words of comfort to him in his final hours. I cannot stress how outstanding the care given was. Dad passed away in peace and with dignity. Words cannot express our gratitude at this very sad time.

One of the most caring, compassionate and respectful care homes in Darlington. My mum suffers from a poor prognosis of Parkinson's and Lewis Body Dementia and hated the thought of having to leave her home and go into a care home. Elderwood turned that around for my mum. They made her feel welcome, comfortable
and cared for and although not her home, she feels settled here and safe. Well done and thank you for caring for my mum so attentively, staff are amazing.

I have had close contact with the care home between October 2023 and July 2024. My wife had reluctantly agreed to go into this home due to falls and lack of mobility. The staff were very helpful and the management was excellent from the top management through to carers, kitchen staff, and cleaning staff.
I experienced some time as a resident for 9 weeks at Christmas 2023 to keep my wife company at a difficult time. The night staff were exceptional as with the staff. My admiration of care at the home still remains.

At the beginning we were uncertain of what to expect from my mam coming to stay at Elderwood.
From the moment we stepped into the home we were greeted by the most helpful and kindest staff. My mam felt immediately happy and content to be here.
From then onwards things have just got better. My mam
feels so special and feels like she has so many new friends (staff).
Our family feel so relieved that she is kept so safe.
And the friendly, warm experience which she receives every single day with (all) the staff is an extra bonus. As a family we couldn't be any happier.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.882)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.882) out of 10 for Elderwood is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.907 for Elderwood is calculated as follows: ( (207 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 225 Ratings = 4.907
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Elderwood is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
