Review from Delyth C (Daughter of Resident) published on 29 May 2020 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

My mother had been a resident for 2-years and had the greatest of care. The end of July she became ill, was in hospital then sent back to Sandford, she then became very ill and decided enough was enough. The final days of her care were some of the most professional and caring I have seen. She passed away in the calm homely manner with her family and friends including staff with her. Not only her needs were provided, but mine were too, they gave me a place to sleep and they kept me fed, watered and time with my mother after she had passed.

My mother has been at Sandford for 2 years and has received excellent care. She has a variety of problems and reacts well to the staff who are always caring.
We are always contacted very quickly when she has had a fall.

She is happy and comments favourably about the food. Due to her poor hearing and eyesight, she finds it difficult to enter into all the activities.

This was a temporary visit for our mum as re-enablement to end up back at home independently. The staff are most welcoming friendly and helpful, can't fault them. Treated mum with the utmost care and dignity. As a family, this was a perfect stop-gap on Mum's journey from hospital to home. Highly recommend.

Although some interesting activities are offered to residents, many feel unable to take part because there is no toilet on the ground floor and they are worried that they could not get back to their rooms quickly enough if they need one.

It would make a huge difference if residents had access to a toilet on the ground floor. Perhaps they would attend the activities and everyone would benefit from more participation.

A very friendly staff who always put residents first. However, lately there has been a high turnover of carers and the management team has been changed a lot.

Small handy odd jobs often need doing and staff need reminding.

Staff are very caring. The home has a happy atmosphere. The staff engage with the residents and encourage activities as far as possible. The fabric of the home is being constantly upgraded, redecorated and improved. My wife died three years ago, so I became NOK to my mother-in-law (resident) - since then the staff have been so helpful to me too, eg. advise me on care plans, do shopping for the correct type of clothes etc.

The staff are always friendly and they treat the residents with respect. I've seen the meals they give them and can't fault them. My wife is very happy there and that is good enough for me. The staff are always friendly when I visit, the place has a good atmosphere.

I find the staff very caring and efficient. However, at the moment, the manager is off sick long term and there has been no continuity for quite some time. However, the deputy manager is extremely efficient and knowledgeable about the procedures and the residents themselves.

My mother has been in your care for nearly 12 months. It started as short-term care while her fracture/dislocation of her shoulder healed but due to the care she has received, she decided to make this a permanent arrangement. The care she has received has been wonderful and as I live 200 miles away the peace of mind that this gives me is worth the money alone. Thank you.

My father has been very confused, frail but wonderful has been treated with the best, kindest, respectful care possible since his arrival just under twelve months ago. The staff do everything possible to assure his continued comfort and wellbeing. They are also mindful of his continued dignity of a once proud and self-sufficient man. Thank you from all our family.

The Dementia unit at Sandford is quite rundown and needs some investment to bring it up to standard. The care staff are welcoming and speak to residents with respect and kindness but regrettably, we found that it did not meet our expectations in providing specialist dementia care for our mum.

Reply from Denise Hampson, Regional Manager at Sandford Care Home

Pearlcare prides itself on providing the highest standard of care at Sandford Care Home. This is evidenced by the many excellent reviews on Care Homes website and contained within the last local authority inspection report, which notably took place at the time this review was submitted and directly...

We find the carers first class, they are kind and efficient even when they are busy. They treat the residents with respect and dignity and are always available for the resident's families when needed. The management have done so well recently in bringing the home up to a high standard. I believe the resident's rooms are on the agenda which would be nice as they are slightly dated, but we have no complaints as this is a small price to pay for our family member feeling safe and secure in a friendly environment.

My mother has been in Sandford Care Home coming up for 4 years in April. Me and all my family are more than pleased with the care she receives. She has come on such a lot since when she first arrived. That's why we are all grateful to all the staff at Sandford.

The staff at Sandford were caring and attentive with my aunt who spent her last years with them. She really settled into her new home enjoying the entertainment and friendliness of everyone. Her funeral cortege departed from Sandford and the staff put on a lovely funeral tea. This was my aunt's home and the staff really worked hard to make it so. We really appreciate their dedication.
