My in-laws first had an initial 2-week respite in September 2021 whilst we went on holiday. They had both had a number of falls at their bungalow so we were pleased when the home could take them in. My father-in-law has vascular dementia at the age of 91 and my mother-in-law is frail at 88 and has
had significant problems with her legs since falling. In November, they initially moved in for respite following another fall but they have been so impressed with the level of care, attention to detail, empathetic attitudes of the staff, and the standard of the accommodation that they have now decided to stay permanently. The staff have been so supportive to us in many ways and have kept us fully informed of any issues relating to their health, well-being, and care requirements. We really cannot thank them enough. We love the fact that we can take our dog in to see them - the staff and other residents have also enjoyed a waggy tail.

Overall pretty good. Tend to be over careful about contacting relatives as sometimes we are told that something has happened which is fairly minor eg sore finger, sore foot, fall but no damage. It would be helpful if someone on duty was qualified to make decisions about the seriousness of something,
seem too quick to call a doctor or ambulance due to reluctance to take responsibility. Fees are high enough to warrant such a member of staff.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Llys CyncoedWe truly value your feedback and the time you took to evaluate your experience with Llys Cyncoed. I am sorry you feel we over-contact you with regards to updates of your loved ones, our aim is to keep our resident's primary contact informed of all instances and occurrences in which their relative is involved. My mother moved to Llys Cyncoed during the Summer of 2020, obviously, you want the best possible environment for your loved one to be in, having reviewed a lot of Care homes, I finally chose Llys Cyncoed (formerly Sunrise) as when I first made contact, they couldn’t have been more helpful, putting my
mind at rest, it’s quite traumatic going through this journey, for your loved one. I made the right choice, my mum has settled, the staff are so warm and caring, you feel as if you are part of their family as well, someone you can talk to if you have any concerns, a lovely environment to live in, the gardens are beautiful in the summer, I’m a very happy daughter, because my mum is happy and contented, and that’s the most important thing for me

Our mum has been in Llys Cyncoed for the past 12 months.
From the outset, the Director of Community Relations, arranged a virtual tour over zoom, to show Mum the facilities and the type of suite Mum would have, which immediately instilled confidence in both Mum and us as a family.
The superb facilities
are obvious as soon as you set foot inside Llys Cyncoed. Added to that, there is a full weekly itinerary of activities to suit all capability levels and a very varied menu at mealtimes. There is no pressure on residents, to take part or go on excursions, but encouragement is always there from the care team.
Finally, but most importantly, the whole care team are fabulous, empathetic, and very responsive to their resident's needs. They make all the residents feel special and due to them, Mum has come out of her shell and is now fully immersed in the activities. The transformation is all down to the care team at Llys Cyncoed.
We would highly recommend this care home to anyone who needs it.

My mother received excellent care at Sunrise Cardiff during a difficult time for her. All the team were caring, supportive and understanding, and many became real friends. I was able to discuss any problems and reassure my mother that they would be resolved. My mother sadly passed away recently, but
my father and I have received exceptional support. We are truly grateful for all that the Sunrise team did to make my mother's time there as comfortable as possible. We also want to pass on our thanks to all the management and staff for their care, practical assistance and concern for our wellbeing during the last few weeks.
Reply from Sara Reading, General Manager at Llys CyncoedFirstly, please accept our sincere condolences for your recent loss, and thank you for taking the time to share your experience of Sunrise of Cardiff – particularly at such a difficult time. The team here are so grateful that your mother had such a positive experience of the home, and this extended to family members and friends.

My wife has been a resident since May/June 2020. This has been during the Covid problem, which has meant no visiting or very limited visiting. Only in the last month, have I been able to have an hour a week and then restricted to her room. I make the above comments as a total review of all of the features
normally on offer that has not been visible or available. The quality of the food and the trips out, come immediately to mind. I am, however, very pleased and happy with what I have seen and experienced so far. Of particular importance to me and to my family, has been the care offered by the well-trained staff. Response to concerns and feedback has been excellent. Of note in this regard, has been the interfacing with a member of staff. His practical advice and a positive, empathetic attitude have been notable features of his professional approach. The ratings reflect the Covid factor.

Having spent the last fifteen months of her life in this care home, my mother was as content and relaxed as she could have been in many years. The care home surpassed my expectations in all aspects of care. The physical environment and the attention of the carers made visiting my mother a pleasure even
during Covid. The care team and staff were phenomenal and totally devoted to protecting and caring for each and every resident

I would highly recommend Sunrise. The quality of care given by staff is exceptional. Staff are thoughtful and take time to consider the care needs of my parents. This hasn't been straightforward during Covid, but I have felt supported by them to ensure that my parents have had the care and support they
need. This ranges from a cup of tea at the right moment, to a joke about something, to the big decisions around isolation due to Covid.
I've felt confident that the teams act in my parents best interest.

I cannot praise Sunrise of Cardiff enough for what they have done for my mum during the time she has been a resident in the reminiscence unit there. Since the first day, she moved in back in May 2016, staff have always gone the extra mile to ensure she is happy and enjoying life. During what was a very
difficult time for us as a family, Sunrise reassured me that Mum was in good hands, and I could see this was the case every time I went to visit. The manager and his team are first class, and no problem is too big or too small. The way the home has handled the COVID-19 pandemic as been nothing but excellent - I have been able to video call my mum regularly, and also book visits when it has been permitted under safe circumstances. Email communication is always on a weekly basis to families also. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for being so caring and kind towards Mum. You have given her such a wonderful quality of life. Truly the best of the best!

Mum and dad moved to Sunrise in Aug 2019 after years of independence and gradual decline at home. We chose Sunrise for its lovely atmosphere and because my parents could carry on sharing a room. It felt like they were moving to a rather nice hotel, though they were apprehensive of course. The welcome
from the team was fantastic, and though both had difficult moments, and longed for their home, the team did everything they could to make Sunrise familiar and friendly.
Sadly, my father passed away in Nov 2019. He was only ill for a short time, but during that difficult period, everyone at Sunrise was so kind and supported us throughout. When my brothers and I were unable to get to hospital to see Dad, Sunrise organised a carer to take mum and sit with her and dad. At the end, they made sure mum was comforted and made to feel secure.
Mum's dementia means she is now in the Reminiscence area and is cared for there with great kindness. Sunrise is a lovely place with lovely people who care.

My mum has been an assisted living resident of Sunrise Care Home Cardiff since October 2019 and has settled in really well. She has a lovely room with an en-suite. The home is beautifully decorated with lovely landscaped gardens. The staff are very caring and make every effort to promote a homelike
environment. The management team are very professional. I have been really impressed with how the home has contained and managed the recent Covid-19 outbreak and kept our loved ones safe. I feel totally confident that my mum is receiving the best care.

My Mum has been a resident in Sunrise since August 2017 and I cannot speak highly enough of the care she has received. My Mum is not the easiest person to manage but the patience and care shown to her has been exemplary. I live in London and therefore it is hard to stay in frequent contact although
my sister is closer, and the communication and quick response on email to any queries has been impressive and reassuring. The past three months have been especially tough and my Mum, to my knowledge, has had at least two Covid tests, both of which were negative. The team at Sunrise Cardiff have been amazing throughout this Covid-19 period and they deserve high praise for their work.

My stepmother was a resident at Sunrise of Cardiff for over 3 years before her death in December 2019. Throughout her stay there the care she received was always outstanding, particularly in the last 6-9 months of her life when her health issues involved frequent visits to hospital A&E and long periods
being bed-bound. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the team who always put her wishes first. From day one she was always full of praise for the staff, the food and the whole environment. I would have no hesitation in recommending Sunrise for anyone looking for a supported living home.

The ethos in the home is very good. Staff really appear to enjoy working there and this positive ethos communicates to the residents. The activities for residents are numerous and well-conceived. The building is very well designed and gives the feeling of being in a luxury hotel. It is spacious and
the bistro is particularly effective. The garden is lovely and is used daily - a feature my mother really appreciates. Communication over the lockdown period has been very good.

I am very pleased that we were able to have my auntie living here in Sunrise. I am happy she is being looked after well in these difficult times. I visit at least once a week and it is a lovely place to be. There are plenty of things going on for those who want to take part. I sometimes take my grandchildren,
to the delight of my auntie and the other residents. They are made welcome too with toys and space in the family room. The staff are friendly and caring and the place is bright and clean.
Thank you all very much for looking after my auntie.

The care my mother who has just become 100 and has been in the home for over 9 years is excellent. The staff are friendly, efficient and very caring. Management are also approachable and communicate well with me when there is anything specific to discuss. I have not been able to visit since Lockdown
began but I am kept in the loop at all times about policy changes due to the pandemic as well as how my mother is. This applies to day to day staff, senior management in the home and the company at head office.
The food served to residents is of a high standard.
Activities are organised on a daily basis.
The home is comfortable and clean.
Families are encouraged to visit at any time and are always welcomed.

My brother and I have been consistently impressed by the high level of care that my father, who suffers from severe dementia, has received from Sunrise of Cardiff's Reminiscence staff (the manager and the team). In the face of the current COVID-19 emergency, working conditions for the staff have been

My mother has been a resident for five years at Sunrise. The staff are caring and take wonderful care of the residents. During this particularly difficult time, the staff have been wonderful, keeping in touch via video calls and regular phone calls. I know Mum is being looked after with care and compassion
and that helps ease the worry at this very unusual time. The home has made significant improvements in the last 12 months under the new general manager and the new refurbishment will make a huge difference to the lives of both the residents and staff.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.951) out of 10 for Llys Cyncoed is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.951 for Llys Cyncoed is calculated as follows: ( (291 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 306 Ratings = 4.951
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Llys Cyncoed is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 99 registered maximum number of service users is 19.8, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1

Job Title: General Manager

I have worked in care since 2011 and now hold a level five diploma in health and social care. I have also completed several other courses that have helped me work my way up from care assistant through to my current role as home manager.

I chose to work for Care UK specifically, because of its commitment to providing person-centred care. As an organisation, it values continuous development, teamwork and compassion. There is also a strong framework of support for anyone that wants to progress in their career.

A good home manager must be highly organised and be genuinely committed to delivering the highest standards of care. Patience, empathy, leadership skills and excellent communication are all equally important.

There are so many highlights to my role, and I take great pride in ensuring Llys Cyncoed is a warm, inclusive and safe environment for residents and colleagues. I feel privileged that I have been promoted to manager in a home where I have grown professionally over the last ten years.

One of my favourite parts of the day is the time I spend with residents. I always make sure to join in the daily anagrams challenge. As well as testing my word-puzzle skills, interacting with residents helps me better understand the support they need.

Taking time to be with residents is also a great reminder of why I chose a career in care – which was to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

Most of my time outside of work is joyfully filled by my two young children. I enjoy reading, going for walks in nature and along the beach. I also have a newly found hobby of buying houseplants.
