My mother has been at Sunrise, Cardiff, since before Christmas 2019 and has settled in really well. The home is spacious with nice rooms and gardens. It is reassuring to know that she is being looked after so well and we are always updated with any issues or concerns. We feel that the staff and carers
genuinely care for my mother and the other people there.

The staff seem very caring and good with the residents. Standards of cleanliness and hygiene are good. The home has a lovely feel, especially now the reception area has been refurbished. Communication with relatives is good.

My mum had a stay at Xmas and loved her time in Sunrise. Struggling with early stages of Dementia not only have Sunrise helped my mum but also me as we adjust to memory loss and changes in mums independence. Mum had to go to Sunrise just prior to Lockdown and I can honestly say the help and support
mum is receiving I have noticed a big change in her. Mum is communicating well and is happy so much so she has decided to stay which is the right decision for her I am absolutely sure of it.
The activities and the team that Sunrise have are amazing and the connection with me, my mum and the team there is really an important factor as it feels like a family.
Mum is eating well she just needs to say she wants to eat less as she thinks she has to eat everything. She gets to go out in the garden and she is enjoying the new Bistro and has made friends that have become very important to her in a very short time.
I hope that Sunrise are recognised for their care and their commitment.
Reply from Sara Reading, General Manager at Llys CyncoedSunrise of Cardiff appreciate moving into a care home can be an unsettling time. This is why we take the time to engage with family members and friends of the resident to make the process as smooth as possible, to get to know the resident on a personal level. We are pleased to hear your mother has settled in well.

Staff generally are good. The decoration is generally poor and depressing. Seating is appalling in communal areas. There is little or no encouragement for residents to take exercise e.g. in the garden where possible. Other activities can be good, but not often.
Why does Sunrise have a food hygiene
rating of only 3?
Reply from Sara Reading, General Manager at Llys CyncoedWe are disappointed to receive this feedback. As our residents, their families and friends already know, Sunrise of Cardiff is being refurbished and this will provide new furniture, seating and décor throughout the home. Every resident has a personal care plan tailored to their individual needs and preferences. We encourage our residents to participate in the many activities and trips we offer. However, we respect individual choice if a resident does not wish to take part.

My father has been a resident for the last two and a half years. He has a large and light room, furnished with many of his own items, The public rooms are spacious, with a number of small areas for more personal meetings. Meals are good with plenty of variety. My father particularly enjoys the trips
out in the minibus, usually three times per week. But most importantly, the staff are excellent, kind, friendly and always with enough time, never hurried.

Generally very pleased with the service and the caring and friendly environment. The staff are very supportive and my mother seems to enjoy the family type feeling in the Reminiscence (Dementia) section and is often smiling and having fun and is having a new lease of life. She enjoys the trips out to
various locations in the Cardiff area and the staff always seem to vary the entertainment provided.

Sunrise staff have cared for my mother whose dementia is accelerating fast. They have carried this out so caringly and professionally that she and I have only good words for them. She has had health concerns addressed with great sensitivity, physical needs gently cared for, while preserving her sense
of dignity too. Everything possible has been done to engage her in all activities that she is capable of.

Sunrise Senior Living Cardiff provides a truly excellent service all around. The location, property and grounds are very well presented and maintained to a high standard. Accommodation standards are very high and clean looking. The staff are very friendly and willing to help others needs. Meal times
are very prompt and a varied choice according to the nutritional needs of the resident. The activities are very well thought of and provision of a minibus for regular excursions to surrounding areas and attractions.

It is reassuring than your loved ones are well looked after which in return is less stress on the family.

The residence is clean and welcoming with a large variety of activities for residents. The whole staff are caring and friendly. The senior staff are extremely helpful and understanding with a residents individual needs. All carers are well trained and keep relatives informed about any changes affecting
residents. All of the staff are very resident focussed and encourage residents to try activities that may not have been considered in the first instance.
The whole place really feels like home and addresses all an individual's needs.

My aunt had to be admitted to hospital and during the course of her stay lost almost all of her mobility. All of the care team at Sunrise worked extremely hard firstly liaising with the hospital and subsequently put in place an augmented care regime. My aunt is now back in Sunrise and has recovered
all her original mobility.

After visiting this care home on many occasions prior to my mother moving from respite care into a permanent, I can honestly say I am extremely pleased this is now her home. The exceptional assistance from both management and carers is outstanding.

Very clean, listen and very obliging to making

sure mum is comfortable and that we are all working together.

This care home has everything, in-house pets (mum is an animal lover), in-house hairdresser, GP comes to the home weekly, Optician is available upon request.

In my opinion management, and carers have asked all the right questions and most importantly have listed to me when I have needed to convey information.

The carers who deal direct with mum, all know me and now getting to know mum. It is almost like an extended family.

Rooms are spacious with lovely views.

The day trips are an added bonus as they have their own minibus.

I really want to say a huge thank you to staff.

better than most homes. Staff very accessible and nice atmosphere concierge system excellent.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.951)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.951) out of 10 for Llys Cyncoed is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.951 for Llys Cyncoed is calculated as follows: ( (291 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 306 Ratings = 4.951
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Llys Cyncoed is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 99 registered maximum number of service users is 19.8, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager

I have worked in care since 2011 and now hold a level five diploma in health and social care. I have also completed several other courses that have helped me work my way up from care assistant through to my current role as home manager.

I chose to work for Care UK specifically, because of its commitment to providing person-centred care. As an organisation, it values continuous development, teamwork and compassion. There is also a strong framework of support for anyone that wants to progress in their career.

A good home manager must be highly organised and be genuinely committed to delivering the highest standards of care. Patience, empathy, leadership skills and excellent communication are all equally important.

There are so many highlights to my role, and I take great pride in ensuring Llys Cyncoed is a warm, inclusive and safe environment for residents and colleagues. I feel privileged that I have been promoted to manager in a home where I have grown professionally over the last ten years.

One of my favourite parts of the day is the time I spend with residents. I always make sure to join in the daily anagrams challenge. As well as testing my word-puzzle skills, interacting with residents helps me better understand the support they need.

Taking time to be with residents is also a great reminder of why I chose a career in care – which was to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

Most of my time outside of work is joyfully filled by my two young children. I enjoy reading, going for walks in nature and along the beach. I also have a newly found hobby of buying houseplants.
