Overall Experience

Mum was a resident for about 18 months. She had poor eyesight and limited mobility. The care home staff always tried to make sure that she joined in as many activities as she was able and wanted to. Northwood House is a progressive home with many activities for those who are mobile and those who are not.

Although it is a nursing home, Northwood felt like a country house and was more a 'family' setting. It is set in lovely grounds near Helensburgh Upper Station, when the weather is nice the residents are encouraged to go into the garden, indeed some help with 'limited gardening', there are many bird feeders too. Those who are able, are taken 'downtown' when this can be arranged. Families are encouraged to take relatives out if they wish or join them in the house. I was quite happy to know that Mum was warm and safe if there were any problems they would be seen to straight away. Mum particularly enjoyed listening to the music, but for those who like it, there is a huge TV in the sitting room!

It has been a very difficult time as a wife realising I can no longer look after my husband of 32 years and his medical needs. He has now been here 3 months and it is amazing how well he has settled and how well the home has looked after him and most importantly helped me deal with this and be so kind and accommodating to me and my family. They make us feel part of a "big family" and I am very grateful.

Northwood House is a joy to visit with a beautiful relaxing garden and comfortable rooms. It is so reassuring for both my family and all the family that immediate attention is always at hand, given so willingly and cheerfully. The facilities are perfect, fresh and the surprise activities and outings are very much appreciated. Guests/residents are considered individually and their preferences and interests are catered for to a high degree. Staff liaison is welcoming, very friendly and informative, allowing privacy or socialising when appropriate. Care here is lovingly planned. Our entire family would highly recommend Northwood House as excellent.

My friend is being cared for with compassion and great professionalism. The staff take great pleasure in seeing the residents happy and well cared for. The residents are able to maintain their dignity in often difficult times, it is a happy home. The meals are excellent and the activities are many and varied. I can't praise the staff enough.

I couldn't be happier with the care that my dad is receiving at Northwood. It is so homely and comfortable, not just for him but his family visiting.

The staff make us so welcoming and treat my dad with respect and great warmth, which has helped him settle in well and helped us come to terms with him no longer living at home.

The warmth of the staff and their attention to my mother's needs kept her safe and contented as her dementia progressed and her health and strength declined. My mother couldn't have a better home for the last years of her life.

I wasn't sure what to expect from care homes in Helensburgh, however very pleased with all aspects of care. The staff are friendly and make you feel that the care provided is no bother to them and that they treat each resident the same.

I have been visiting my friend in the above care home for the past two years. I have always found the staff to be very helpful and pleasant. They care so well for my friend and afford her the dignity and respect to which a 90-year-old is entitled. They listen to her and respond appropriately to all her needs. They look after her general health and encourage her in all aspects of her personal care.

The home is always clean, warm and welcoming. My friend's room is more than adequate for her needs and is maintained very well. The food is first class and good and drinks are always available. There are a number of very enjoyable activities provided as well as hairdressing etc.

Excellent staff, accommodation and support for Mother . Staff go the extra mile to interact with her and ensure she gets as much out of life as she can, given her severe impairment now. Am very happy with the competence of the nursing staff in particular.

Overall Experience
Such friendly caring staff. Open all hours. All staff are extremely approachable and willing to listen to and act on all concerns. Patience is a virtue you have in abundance.
Residents encouraged but never forced or coerced to do anything against their will. No strict set of rules, just sensible guidelines. Those with capacity are involved in decisions about their care. It is obvious that, even when request of resident is not always easy to accommodate, all staff try hard to fulfil wishes of resident.

The saying, "you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink" is exactly the ethos of Northwood House. It will never be home but it is obvious you all do your best to make it a home from home. From the bright decor, welcoming staff and gardener who obviously takes pride in his bright, peaceful garden. Well done to all.

Reply from Annette Gillies, Manager at Northwood House

It's always nice to hear positive feedback from our residents' friends and family. We develop close relationships with all visitors and believe they are an integral part of our decision making process and assist us in meeting the residents' care needs.

Is mentioned below this is a good care home. The only issue is regarding emergency hospital admissions where a plan is being forwarded to ensure a member of staff will be in attendance when a resident makes a hospital visit. I have had discussions with one of the directors and has this matter in hand
