The staff were consistently helpful and cheerful which created a good atmosphere. They showed patience and consideration when residents were distressed. The care on the first floor was very good and much more focused as it needed to be than downstairs. My main area of criticism would be the food which
tended to be dull and tasteless. In general, my mother-in-law was well cared for and ended her days with dignity.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Alexander Care HomeThank you for your comments. In relation to the food that was served in the home, as an organisation, we follow a set of 4 weekly rolling menu that was planned with suggestions and ideas from Residents and relatives. We also consulted nutritionists and dieticians to ensure that all our Residents have a healthy and balanced diet. I am glad to hear that in general you are happy and satisfied with the highest standard of care and dignity maintained for your relative during the last days of her life. Once again thank you taking the time to contact us and we will take it on board to continue in improving our service.

I would highly recommend Alexander Care Home in Ladywell. The staff took great care of my Granddad and his sister. Although it was a new experience for all of us, the staff and other residents quickly came to feel like extended family. You can stay for mealtimes or book in for a Sunday lunch. The home
has a wonderful garden with squirrels and foxes providing great entertainment through the parlour windows.
The bedrooms are cozy and if you need anything you just have to ask. There is parking on site.

I am very grateful for all of their hard work.

I was very impressed with this care home in which my aunt (105) was put in. I am told on the above date by a resident that they are wonderfully looked after.
The staff are all kind and it's a pleasure to live there.

My wife's aunt is in the care of Alexander Care Home. We visited with her brother and sister for her aunt's 105th birthday. This was our first visit and I was impressed with the facilities and staff and the trouble they had gone to to make this a special day for auntie. Unfortunately, Auntie cannot
hear and sees poorly so she was unaware of what is going on around her.
However, at that great age, she is in the best place for care and safety.

Since I've been visiting my ex-husband here during the past year I have found the staff extremely kind and helpful. Always welcoming with a smile and a kind word.
As a care home, they understand the problems of mental health issues, I highly recommend this care home.

Alexander Care Home is a very good care home, most of the staff are very good there is just a few who show that it just classed as a job without the care I have known that a few do not communicate well with visitors and actually show that there is no interest in the residents which I find is sad. I
also notice there is a shortage of staff on the first floor, especially at weekends.
It has been said that there is a choice of food, as long as I have been visiting my mother, my mother has not been offered a choice of food. I would also like to point out when has Semolina has been classed as an evening meal, as when I was a child I was given that as a pudding not as a main meal.
Reply from Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Alexander Care HomeThank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback as this helps us improve our service where required. The Home Manager has spoken with the team to reiterate how important communication with family and friends is and the organisation's expectations of this. The Home Manager has spent time with you regarding the staffing grid of the home and has explained how staffing is determined on each unit. Staffing is based on the dependencies of our Residents and reviewed at least monthly or as and when individuals needs change. The Home Manager has met with the Chef and the kitchen team regarding the menu specifically regarding the evening and supper meal times to ensure that meals provided are according to HC-One's approved menu choices; this will continue to be monitored by the Management Team.

I think the care at the home is very good and staff are excellent. I would like to make one recommendation for patients who are bedbound and unable to be lifted to the lounge.
Please could a small amount of time, say 30 minutes, once or twice a week be allocated to be spent (one to one time) with those
patients, so they have some type of activity time.
This could be a hand massage, nail painting, card making, etc.
The number of residents bed bound is about ten on the first floor and it is sad they miss out on activities as they are unable to move from their rooms.
It would be great to improve their quality of life.
Reply from Katie Price, Careline Advisor at Alexander Care HomeThank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback received as this helps us improve our service at Alexander Care Centre. With regards to our Residents who stay in their bedrooms, the Wellbeing Coordinator schedules one to one time to engage with these Residents as per our schedule of activities. These activities include Reminiscing and Down Memory Lane, newspaper and magazine reading, pampering and massage. We also have regular visits from local religious and spiritual organisations who provide communion and blessings to all Residents including those who remain in their rooms, if they so wish. To ensure our Residents are supported with social engagement and to improve our service, we are currently recruiting for an additional fulltime Wellbeing Coordinator. Thank you for your kind praise of our staff and care provision, we are very proud of our staff team and the work they undertake to ensure our Residents needs are met.

My mum is always so happy when we visit her. The staff are so welcoming to visitors. There is always plenty going on, Mum is so well cared for and the staff cater to her individual needs.

We love the coffee area and the little touches of lovely soap and hand cream in the visitors' toilet and even

a scented candle.

Such a lovely home that we, as a family, are very happy with.

Wow, what a fantastic care home it's the best in the South East. The management and staff are so caring and very professional. The home is spotlessly clean, the food is of top standard. The care these people show is unbelievable. I visited a number of care homes but none of them can compare to Alexander
Care Home. I would recommend it to family and friends.
I would like to say a big thank you to the management and carers for giving my mum the best quality of life that she is getting there.

Alexander Care Home, it is one of the best residential homes. The staff and management are of a high quality, very caring to not only residents but family too. It is clean, safe and the management are fantastic, nothing is too much trouble, the carers are fully qualified to top standards. My mother
is so happy being there, we have viewed so many care homes in the area and found this one is the best, it has absolutely everything. You could not get a better care home. I highly recommend it to everyone.

My mother has been in Alexander Care Home since the end of April 2017.
As a family, we have been very impressed with the very high standard of care provided.
The staff are highly professional at all levels, management to cleaners, and all very friendly.
On all our visits we have always felt welcome
and been given information about my mother's well-being.
In July my mother had her 100th birthday and the care centre made arrangements for the family to celebrate the event at the centre and we all had a fantastic time.
Her room is well decorated, modern and always clean.
I highly recommend The Alexander Care Home.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.244)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.244) out of 10 for Alexander Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.269 for Alexander Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (121 Excellents x 5) + (89 Goods x 4) + (23 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (8 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 245 Ratings = 4.269
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Alexander Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 78 registered maximum number of service users is 15.6, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
