Overall Experience

In 2020, I faced the challenge of finding an appropriate care home for my mother during the COVID lockdown. Despite the inability to visit potential homes in person, I engaged in extensive telephone discussions with managers from various facilities on my list. Ultimately, I chose Derwent Lodge, and I am delighted to report that the care provided to my mother has been exceptional. The home is very clean, promoting health and safety, with a good variety of meal options and resident entertainment. The staff treats residents with genuine compassion, dignity, and respect. During my weekly visits, I witness laughter and smiles and am personally made to feel like a part of the family. The carers are exceptional, and the nurses are incredibly helpful when I have any questions and provide regular updates on my mother's well-being. Most importantly, my mum is happy there. I wish to extend my gratitude to everyone at Derwent Lodge for the wonderful care they provide to my mother.

My father was a resident of Derwent Lodge for a little longer than 6 months. He was transferred to Derwent Lodge from a different care home, where he wasn't treated well at all. The care my father received at Derwent Lodge is above excellent. All the staff looked after him so well, I never had a bad word to say. The carers are amazing, the nurses are so friendly and above helpful, always happy to stop and talk and give an update. If any concerns were raised to them, they would straight away deal with it, without questions asked. The residents are treated with dignity and respect. My father sadly passed away 2 months ago, but I will forever be grateful to everyone, from carers, nurses to management for looking after my father like no one ever did before and for making the last few months of his life as comfortable as they possibly could.

Thank you to everyone at Derwent Lodge from the bottom of my heart, from Mum and myself.

Mum went into the care home in January 2021, a very difficult time, when visiting was not allowed. From the start we were kept up to date with Mum's care and kept in touch with her through phone calls and video calls with the Wellbeing Coordinator who throughout has made us feel included and reassured. All the staff are friendly, caring and efficient. Mum is happy being part of the Derwent Lodge family.

Staff have been very helpful in accommodating my mother's needs, especially given that this is a care centre, not a rehab centre. Her only complaint is that hot meals are often cold by the time she is served. I have noticed a very friendly attitude from all staff to residents and visitors. The centre is very clean and tidy.

My wife has been suffering from the sad illness of Alzheimer's and has been in Derwent Lodge for almost 3 years. We were made welcome from the first day which allayed my initial trepidation. I have nothing but admiration for the staff and management for their dedication which goes beyond the call of duty.

Care of residents is foremost but the welfare of families is also considered. I casually remarked that our Golden Wedding Anniversary was imminent. Come the day, her room was decorated, cards from the staff and a cake for us. Totally unexpected and a lovely surprise. The Standard of care, food and cleanliness is very good. Coach has been provided for outings which sadly have been curtailed because of the pandemic.

My dad has just passed away after 2 years at Derwent Lodge and the care and respect that he was given in the 2 years were fantastic.

Initially, he refused to leave his room but with the time and patience of the activities manager, he managed to get him to leave his room. Which contributed greatly to his mental health and well being. Dad had so much respect for the activities manager and would always talk about him and missed him when he wasn’t on duty. The carers kept me updated with Dad and they always found time to talk when I called. In his final days, the standard of care provided was excellent which was a comfort to the family. Would highly recommend. And from the family a massive thank you!

I am extremely happy with the standard of care that my mother has received. The staff treat her with dignity and respect and are very caring. The room is spacious and there is plenty of space for her belongings. The activities manager is excellent and only too happy to help with her needs, hairdresser appointments, ensuring she receives her daily papers and that she is aware of all of the activities available to her. He is also very cheerful and she looks forward to seeing him which always puts a smile on her face. The food is very good and plentiful. The nursing staff always update me on her progress. I often have many questions which the staff are only too happy to answer and if my mother requires anything it is actioned straight away. I would recommend this home for your loved ones.

Dad went to Derwent Lodge direct from hospital in November 2019 and sadly passed in July 2021. He was well cared for and I was given frequent updates on his health up until the end.

The staff all appear to be friendly and enthusiastic. A big thank you to the senior activities coordinator, the registered nurse and the rest of the staff who had the opportunity to know Dad.

My lovely mum entered Derwent Lodge in August 2019 after having a stroke. The care and attention received by Mum from all the staff has been outstanding from day one! They took fantastic care of Mum until we sadly lost her in April 2021.
I would highly recommend this facility in every respect.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff.

My Mum went into Derwent Lodge last July 2020. She went straight from Hospital. We did not choose the care home but we were not able to look after her at home anymore as she has extreme Alzheimer’s and requires 24-hour Nursing Care and is bedbound. I have nothing but praise for the staff who work there. They are so friendly and warm towards me. I am able to visit my Mum in her room and as she is Palliative I have been able to do so for many months. Today she was sitting in her new wheelchair! The first time she has been out of her bed for 9 months! Everyone was happy for her and me to see her like this! I hope that this will make her quality of life better for however long she has left.

The home has done its best in difficult times. Things have not always gone right, but they been great in learning lessons. One gentleman, in particular, has been amazing from day one. Mum entered the home with deteriorating Alzheimer’s Dementia, and her condition really improved hugely until lockdown hit in October. This was largely due to the care and stimulating activities.

Preventative care should be focused on my dad's needs, creme should be applied on his scrotum area regularly as it is exposed to excreta as he is bedbound, due to which it swells. Applying the creme every day will prevent swelling instead of waiting for it to happen.

All the carers are nice and capable of doing this preventative care so that we don't see the doctors too much.
