My brother was at St Jude's, not by choice, due to no other home that could meet his needs. He was there for a total of 15 days then he very sadly passed. The language barrier with all staff was a massive issue, especially on the phone. He was bed-bound and couldn't use the call bell as they put it
on the wall out of his reach. He had Parkinson's and had several strokes so he was unable to communicate. He deteriorated very quickly, suffering from recurring aspiration pneumonia. We had an agreement with the home for them to contact my sister and I when he was near the end of life but they left it too late and he passed alone. We were stressed that they didn't call sooner. When I contacted the home I was told "oh he passed" then they hung up. The last time I saw my brother I pulled the call bell and it took 10 minutes for nurses to respond. My advice is to find another home and not go to St Jude's. Very angry and upset.

Our mother was brought into St Jude's just as Covid commenced. The way in which visitors were handled was, in our view, extremely poor, with little commonsense and was completely over the top (compared to hospitals and other care homes).
This has landed our view on the overall care received.
Bearing
in mind, our mum and her husband were in the same care home, the lack of understanding and willingness to put them close to each other was disappointing, to say the least.
Some of the carers were excellent, but others were poor.
Reply from Patricia Fyfe, Manager at St Jude's Nursing HomeI am sorry the family were overall unhappy with the management of C-19 at St Jude's which has impacted on the overall opinion of our service. During the height of the pandemic our C-19 restrictions were exceedingly robust which enabled us to maintain a safe environment to protect our frail elderly and staff, so safe we did not lose any residents to Covid. We are truly grateful to those who fully supported our management of the virus as difficult as it was. But without their unwavering support, we may have suffered the loss of many of our dear residents as was the case with many care homes and hospitals all over the country. I am also sorry your mother and her husband did not spend much time together but this was mostly down to personal choice. On a more positive note, I am pleased to say post Covid our home has returned to its open door with families as part of the St Jude’s community again enjoying our busy social calendar. Your mother was a lovely lady, still sadly missed.

My mother was a resident at St Jude’s for 17 months. In that time the care and compassion that the staff showed was excellent. She was always well-fed and kept extremely clean. As her health deteriorated they still showed the same level of kindness. A lovely nursing home which I would recommend.

It was a pleasure knowing St Jude's Nursing Home. They took care of my Father, especially when we were rejected by many other homes due to his conditions. St Jude's provided professional care for my Dad. They did everything to make him more settled during his stay. I will always recommend St Jude's
Nursing Home to others.
Reply from Patricia Fyfe, CQC Registered Manager at St Jude's Nursing HomeThank you for your lovely review. My father-in-law was diagnosed with dementia, which resulted in him requiring more sensitive and specialised care.
His residence at St Jude's from the beginning of the year. Initially presented challenges, but thankfully the home has been brilliant in accommodating and supporting him.
His demeanour
has improved greatly, which results in him looking so well.
Each time we visit, we feel welcome and have full confidence in the support provided.
Although my father-in-law doesn't participate in group activities, there is clear evidence that inclusion is the ethos of St Jude's.
At a previous visit, my husband was overjoyed to see Dad in the lounge area, seated with the other residents.
St Jude's has been a true blessing and solution to our anxiety regarding Dad's care within the community.
Reply from Patricia Fyfe, CQC Registered Manager at St Jude's Nursing HomeThank you so much for your lovely and very positive review. The team work tirelessly to support our residents to lead fulfilled and enriched lives daily as far as they can and wish, and this, of course, includes your father-in-law. The team will love to read your kind words.

It is early days, as my husband suffering from dementia, moved into St Jude's just three weeks ago. So far, I have been really impressed. The staff seem to go out of their way to welcome my husband and myself when visiting. They are caring and friendly with a team spirit. The home is very clean, and
so is his very adequate room. The personal care is excellent. After having cared for my husband for several years, I can now leave him in the very capable hands of St Jude's and still be able to come and see him whenever I wish. Thank you to everyone at St Jude's!

The St Jude's care home staff are very supportive and helpful with their care to my mum from what I have seen on my visits. The care home facilities appear to be more than adequate for my mum in the condition she is in. The main plus is that the staff have been able to get my mum out of bed, which she
was not able to do before she became a resident of St Jude's care home.

I think St Jude’s has recently been refurbished. The decor and furnishings are beautiful and comfortable. Everything is kept nice and clean and fresh.
The staff are caring and attentive; they speak kindly to the residents.
The food is cooked on the premises and is varied, appetising and nicely presented.
I

All the staff at St Jude's work hard to provide the best care for my mother. My mum has been there for over four years, and I wouldn't want her anywhere else.
If I need to discuss an issue, a staff member, nurse and the manager will make themselves available.
Covid changed the ease of visiting but
as this is changing there is a big welcome when you ring the doorbell.
Thank you for all you do.

The staff are very rude, mainly the manager and the head nurse. They refuse to let me speak to my father, this isn't right. They do not contact you back when you ask for a call. I understand about the pandemic going on but I should be able to speak to my father as I need to sort things with him and
he is in palliative care and they are refusing to let me speak to him. Staff are very hard to understand as well.
Reply from Patricia Fyfe, CQC Registered Manager at St Jude's Nursing HomeThank you for your feedback however, we are saddened at the comments made. We understand that putting a loved one into care can be a difficult decision, but we try and support relatives and their loved ones the best we can as we understand the first few days and weeks can be upsetting. However, we do take your concerns and feedback seriously and would like to thank you for taking the time to share your views. The staff was friendly enough and the care home was very clean. My grandad's room was very spacious. However, on every occasion we visited, my grandad looked unwashed, was unshaven, and looked generally unkempt, which wasn’t very nice to see, as he was a very proud and dignified man. The care home also
threw away his great granddaughter's drawings she did for him that we left at his bedside along with his birthday cards. Finally, on the last day we saw my Grandad (31st September), the staff couldn’t open the front door as they didn’t know the code. It took a few minutes and a third member of staff to know the code. What if there had have been a fire?
Overall I think the service is below par for the costs.
Reply from Patricia Fyfe, CQC Registered Manager at St Jude's Nursing HomeThank you for your review which has caused me some concern. Your mother visited almost daily and was continually grateful for the excellent care given to your grandfather so I am a little confused by these comments. However, I am aware there was great disappointment for the family over the missing drawing and birthday cards. Therefore I have decided to manage your issues of concern through the company complaints procedure and will forward to the family my outcome within 28 days.

My mother was at St Jude's for six years. Her experience there was good, although improvements could have been made in terms of the cultural aspects of her life. On the whole, the family was always treated with respect by all staff members. Kept informed most of the time of changes or events in Mother's
condition. Love the newsletter, which kept us informed during lockdown (excellent).

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.550)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.550) out of 10 for St Jude's Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 36 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.550 for St Jude's Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (252 Excellents x 5) + (155 Goods x 4) + (15 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 424 Ratings = 4.55
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Jude's Nursing Home is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 35 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
