Austen House is a purpose-built Nursing Home in Reading, set in a semi-rural location and within easy reach of Wokingham and London. The staff at Austen House are dedicated to meeting all residents’ needs.

Austen House boasts an established, well run Nursing Floor with dedicated, experienced nurses 24 hours a day.

Austen House’s specialised Memory Lane Community (for people living with dementia) was refurbished in Summer 24. The team have also been awarded certificates by the Alzheimer's Society for passing a course that helped with enhancing their understanding of dementia. It involves improved insight into dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and learning that feelings matter most.

My mother has been here for a year and we are extremely pleased with her care. All the staff are kind, welcoming and caring. All the staff are respectful and professional in their approach to my mother. She is encouraged to join in with all the activities on offer. She is safe and happy - thank you.

As the wife of a new resident with you, from the moment you enter Barchester Austen House Care Home, you are greeted with a smile from all your front of house staff. All carers treat you with great respect and kindness. Everywhere is very clean and today, no matter when you visit. My husband is always
clean and tidy and is very content with all that is around him. You have a great team doing the activities and I encourage my husband to go to all possible. Food, as life as a chef he always compliments his meals and likes to see the daily menu. We were just lucky you had a place for him. Big thank you.

The entire staff team from office, nurses, carers, kitchen staff, housekeeping, activity team, handyman are fantastic, kind and caring. They are so friendly, I cannot say how much we appreciate the high standard of love and care given to our mum, food is incredible, selection is wonderful and the homemade

My father was moved to Barchester Austen House Care Home from his previous care home as his care needs had changed and he now needs nursing care.
The level of care he has received here, as well as the support extended to us (his family), is second to none.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable
- enabling my father to live comfortably and treating him with dignity.
I cannot recommend this setting highly enough.

My mum has just become a resident at Austen House Nursing Home, she's on her 5th day, and so far the transition has been great, the staff are so very friendly and help with everything I have asked. It's very organised. She's in a provisional room at present until her own room is decorated to my/her

Pleasant surroundings. Extremely kind, friendly and caring staff. Most important the resident is happy. Enjoys the company of staff and residents. Activities are planned regularly to ensure residents are kept busy. The home is in a residential area with attractive outlooks of well-kept gardens.

In all my years of being a private carer, I have never been so impressed with this care home. Over the months I have brought my friend who visits the home. The staff are incredible, so polite and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. I am so happy to write a review as credit where credit is due.

Mum has been living in Austen House for nearly 18 months now and during that time she has been really well cared for. Every member of staff is kind and caring to Mum, and they are all very friendly, welcoming and open to me, as her daughter. The nursing staff are on the ball so that any health issues
are dealt with before it becomes a problem. The activities staff do a great job in providing stimulating activities to engage the residents so I know Mum is not left alone. I have found the manager very approachable when I have had any questions and she has been really helpful recently on a couple of matters. All in all, I know Mum is in the best possible place at Austen House.

Ever since my dad has been in Austen House Care Home, he has previously been relatively independent and even able to make positive contributions to the activities and life of the home. Sadly towards the end of December 2022, he was taken very ill and subsequently needed everything to be done for him.
The staff have been amazing! Great communication with us (his relatives) and doing all that can be done to meet his needs, treating him with love, dignity and respect.

There is a good atmosphere in the home and the staff are very welcoming, helpful and cooperative to the needs of my wife. Any issues that arise are dealt with and fully discussed. Over a five-year period, I have not had any reason to complain and have been satisfied with the care and attention my wife
has received.

My mum was well cared for and looked after by the staff who treated her with respect. All members of staff are very friendly and the home is kept clean and well maintained. We have been very happy with the service received during my Mum's stay until her passing last month. The medical attention she
received was excellent and the team were very comforting and supportive to the family. We are very grateful to everyone so thank you.

Our family were very happy with the care and consideration that was given to our mother throughout the lockdown and as her health deteriorated. She always enjoyed the activities on offer, especially the animal visits, the visits from local school children and singing. In the last weeks of her life,

I have found all the staff very approachable and helpful with a friendly and positive manner. The restaurant and lounge areas are spacious and luxurious and easy for my mother to get to. The activities staff are wonderful and encourage the residents to attend and are respectful if they chose not to.
The residents are given a weekly agenda of the activities and can choose at any time which activities they would like to attend. Austen House meets all my mother's needs and I am confident she is well cared for.

I have worked in Health and social care for 25 years, and was a registered manager in various care settings for 15 years. Most recently, I have been registered manager of a premium care home for the last 4 years.


I am very passionate about delivering outstanding care to our residents, empowering them to make choices and live their lives to the fullest. I believe resident wellbeing is paramount and should be at the centre of everything we do, and I enjoy making a meaningful impact on their lives.

Jo is our home hairdresser at Austen House, appointments with her are available two days a week and she is very flexible over what time residents would like, we all love a pamper and she also visits residents in their rooms if they prefer!
