My mother seems very happy in her new care home. We can see she is well looked after and the staff are always very welcoming whatever time of the day we come into the home. Always a lovely clean room and peace of mind for us.

Our mother had severe dementia and was looked after for eight years in the home. Her children lived overseas. She was looked after with care and dignity till the end. We were able to feel secure in the knowledge that she was well looked after. We are extremely grateful to the home and the staff.

Reply from Communications Team, Customer Relations Manager at Brendoncare Alton

Thank you for your recent review and positive feedback which we really appreciate. We are pleased you feel your mother was well cared for by our staff, who over the years built up a strong rapport with her. It was always a pleasure to see you and your brother on such a regular basis, despite you both living overseas.

When Mum arrived at Brendoncare in March 2016 it was with some reluctance and even apprehension, but it wasn't long before she forged strong, friendly relationships with the staff, from cleaners to nurses, which is a credit to the professionalism of them all. Eventually, Brendoncare became "home" to her and the staff who knew her well treated her like family (not distantly like a hotel guest). She enjoyed the informal banter and humour with the staff in days when there have been numerous reasons for failing or sub-standard nursing homes. We count ourselves fortunate that Mum was at Brendoncare, a charitable institution with a clear "residents first" ethos.

Front of house staff (reception, administrative etc) very friendly, helpful and efficient.

Wing staff caring, friendly and mindful of the needs and difficulties of those in their care. They gave the resident a warm welcome. They are helpful even though they are very busy. The senior nurse on the wing is very approachable.

Brendoncare Alton is a well-run care home with friendly staff. It is a charity complex with 2 elements, a care home surrounded with 1 and 2 bedroom apartments (sold to elderly residents, who can pay for the use of the care home facilities, including a restaurant).
The home serves meals for 50% of residents in small dining rooms and serves meals for other residents on trays within their own rooms. This pattern could be improved by better organisation, at no cost.
Residents served in the dining room wait for 20 minutes before the food arrived from the kitchen. Staff serve food for rooms, only about 20 minutes later are dining room patients served.

Simply by serving dining room patients first, unnecessary waiting would be removed.

Reply from Lynne Hewitt, General Manager at Brendoncare Alton

Thank you for your comments and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We really appreciate your suggestions regarding the household dining room service and please be assured these will be used to improve the experience for residents dining here.

Most of the nurses and carers are excellent but the management seems poor with a high reliance on agency staff and a high staff turnover of long-term staff. While staff and carers are client-focused, management seems focused on the bottom line and often fail to consider carers’ views or opinions despite them being the people who know the care staff best.

Thank you for taking the time to review Brendoncare Alton. As a charity, residents' needs rather than profit are always our highest priority. Please do let me know when you are next in the country as it would be good to meet and discuss any concerns you may have. Best wishes.

My father spent a number of weeks here in respite at the Brendoncare Alton. I found that the atmosphere was always positive and upbeat. All the staff were very approachable, friendly and only too pleased to help or assist. This was for all the levels of staff I encountered, including nurses, carers and admin. I was very impressed and happy with his care before, during and after his passing. The staff were very helpful, attentive, caring and most significantly, respectful. He was always clean, warm and well looked after. He could not have been in a better place or have received better care. By chance, I was the only family member with him at the difficult time of his passing and even I received the special support I needed from the staff (special thanks to one member of staff).

A very welcoming care facility that treats the tenants as humans and with the respect that they have earnt. I would not hesitate to highly recommend them.

The care my mother receives was excellent. She was looked after in a way which we could not have managed were she at home.
She was angry at first but became less so and eventually, through the kindness of everyone, peaceful.

Sean Daly
Sean DalyJob Title Interim Care Home ManagerJoined 2013

I initially started my career with Brendoncare as a care assistant and was inspired to go on to my nurse training, and returned as an RN after a few years in the NHS. I then furthered my career, becoming Brendoncare’s deputy manager.

One of my main interests is long-term care of people living with dementia and how we can support them and their families. I attended various dementia workshops and took what I learnt into creating a dementia workshop programme for the staff at Alton to give them the knowledge, skills and confidence to help them give effective and meaningful care.

I am now Brendoncare’s Dementia Lead but have returned to Alton as its interim manager.

Both my mother and my grandmother had a passion for caring and their dedication to helping other people inspired me to train as a nurse. I graduated in nursing in 2005, then took a Masters degree in Psychology and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in 2008. After having worked in two private settings, I started working in social care in 2015 and joined Brendoncare in 2018 as Deputy Manager. I am deeply passionate about making a positive impact in people's lives, especially in a field where understanding, empathy and support are crucial.

Outside work, I enjoy spending time with my family and watching my young daughter growing up and exploring the world around her. My husband restores classic cars and we enjoy going to car races and shows and have even won some international competitions.

Janet Graham

My 12 years of social care experience have been mainly working for corporate nursing home providers in customer-facing roles supporting families seeking residential care for their loved ones. I joined Brendoncare in 2017 initially as a wellbeing coordinator, bringing fun and joy to residents’ lives through a range of activities. After a brief spell in 2019 working for another care provider, I returned to Brendoncare as Customer Relations Manager. This role involves supporting new residents and their families to ensure their move to a Brendoncare home goes as smoothly as possible.

I enjoy watercolour painting and entering amateur photography competitions. I love the smell of freshly cut grass and fragrant roses in my garden – appreciating the beauty of life’s simple pleasures means so much to me.
