Barchester St Thomas Care Home is set in the heart of the Basingstoke community in close proximity to the town centre and within walking distance to both rail and bus links.

As you enter this home you will see a stunning Chapel dating back to 1885. This is now used for functions and is available for residents and families to use for social gatherings. Carers pride themselves on providing highly trained dementia care to residents, tailoring the care to meet their individual needs as they appreciate that no two people are the same.

The care team consists of Registered Nurses and carers who are all experienced in caring for residents with various stages of dementia and complex nursing needs. All rooms are individual and offer en-suite facilities. The home is also very fortunate to have well-established secure internal garden with a colourful courtyard garden.

Each day there is a full activities programme facilitated by a dedicated activities team. Activities are arranged to suit the interests of residents and can vary from group to individual programmes.

My aunt has been a resident for nearly five years, in which time, she has been well cared for. I have found the staff to be very friendly and easy to approach. The last 18-month have been very difficult for staff, residents and family, and I feel the home has done a wonderful job keeping everyone safe
and have been impressed how they have handled visiting for families.

Staff are always very caring both to residents and relatives. Any medical issues or respite visits are promptly discussed. One issue I have is that I'm a little disappointed with clothes in his wardrobe - many are not his!

My mother has been a resident for about 2 years, the staff have always been friendly and professional, when Mum was first there she was very active and a member of staff was always with her and I never got the feeling that they had a problem with that, unlike a previous home, when mum has been unwell
they have always kept me updated about mums condition and have discussed the issues with me. In the past year, the staff have gone out of their way to help me to visit mum for which I am very grateful.

We, as a family, would like to thank the home for looking after my mother-in-law. She arrived at the home bedbound and on a puree diet from a previous home and hospital stay. She is now back walking and on a normal diet. A better quality of life.

Our mother moved into St Thomas Care Home on 1st November 2020. She settled very quickly and is very happy with the care and attention she is receiving - she always says the "girls are lovely" when talking about the staff. She enjoys the food as well as the numerous activities facilitated at the home.
Any issues and concerns have been dealt with in an extremely professional and efficient way by the staff.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.298)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.298) out of 10 for Barchester St Thomas Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.726 for Barchester St Thomas Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (77 Excellents x 5) + (29 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.726
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.572 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester St Thomas Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 67 registered maximum number of service users is 13.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 13.4 = 0.672
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
