Barchester St Thomas Care Home is set in the heart of the Basingstoke community in close proximity to the town centre and within walking distance to both rail and bus links.

As you enter this home you will see a stunning Chapel dating back to 1885. This is now used for functions and is available for residents and families to use for social gatherings. Carers pride themselves on providing highly trained dementia care to residents, tailoring the care to meet their individual needs as they appreciate that no two people are the same.

The care team consists of Registered Nurses and carers who are all experienced in caring for residents with various stages of dementia and complex nursing needs. All rooms are individual and offer en-suite facilities. The home is also very fortunate to have well-established secure internal garden with a colourful courtyard garden.

Each day there is a full activities programme facilitated by a dedicated activities team. Activities are arranged to suit the interests of residents and can vary from group to individual programmes.

I was so nervous, guilty and anxious about putting my father into residential care but I needn't have been. He was made to feel very welcome and has settled in just right. He has loads of space to roam freely (still being watched though) which suits him just fine. He is definitely in the right place
for him.

The staff are very friendly and helpful to all of us, especially to my Dad who visits daily. The home has a nice feel about it and we are lucky to have it just down the road, so my Dad still feels close to my Mum.

My wife and I have been visiting St Thomas to see our friend at least twice a week since June 2018. We liken the home to a 4-5 star hotel for its atmosphere in all areas such as lounges, dining rooms and also its food quality. We are constantly impressed by the efficient manner in which the staff at
all levels perform their duties. Their dedication to the care and welfare of the residents is worthy of the highest commendation and we have never seen or heard anything of a derogatory nature, worthy of complaint. In addition, we are impressed with the friendliness shown towards us by all the staff, who always greet us with a smile, as indeed they also do when dealing with the residents. Well done St Thomas.

I am made very welcome by staff when I visit - they are courteous and kind, both to me and my husband. He is recently in bed (11am) when I call and I know he has medical problems which I am confident staff understand. He has to be got out of bed by hoist now. A wheelchair is used to get him around because
now he is so unsteady.
When I stay over lunchtime I help feed him. He doesn't speak much but, staff do keep a watchful eye on him as he is so unsteady.
Lovely to see tablecloths and napkins - bibs are supplied when required.
The activities for exercise are sympathetically done - husband benefitted even when just watching.
It is nice to sit and view the garden together; doors, of course, are mostly shut.
St Thomas's refurbishment is excellent - my husband likes the little chapel coffee shop -fresh coffee and cakes!

My uncle became a resident in August of 2018 as he could not look after himself any more due to the fact that he had dementia and was forgetting basic things like eating and washing and a major thing of not taking his medication. Since he has been there my sister and myself no longer have to worry on
a daily basis, he is getting all the care that he could hope for.

My Dad came to the care home in March. His care was good to start with, but due to my Dad's health, he is now on puree food, was very upset to find my Dad being given solid food. I have also found when I arrive in the evening, residents are being left alone and no carer in sight, which is disappointing.
There has been one carer who will go above and beyond to help, a wonderful carer.

Nursing care of my mum is very good. I know that she is safe and being looked after. The food is fairly good and they are improving on the activities. The facilities are being improved due to the current project to update the fixtures and fittings. The nurses and carers take time to take care of the
medical and personal care and make the residents feel calmer and looked after.

I have always found the home well kept and very clean and tidy, the staff and management are very pleasant at all times, any complaints are dealt with very quickly. I think personally that the home is a very well organised establishment. I couldn't wish for a better home for my wife's care and support.

St Thomas Care Home was my Mum's home through her final years. The feeling of love and support throughout was unquestionable and the connection that the staff had with Mum was lovely as well as incredibly comforting for us as a family. The most important thing for us was that it should feel homely and
that Mum should be as settled as possible and I never doubted that for a second during the time she was there.
Nobody wishes to see their relative's health reach the point when they need to go into a care home but, if that time is coming, then rest assured that the team at St Thomas will do everything they can to get to know the person and do everything in their power to make sure they are as happy and well cared for as possible.
I know that they helped make Mum's final years happy for her and we'll be forever thankful to them for that as we could not have asked for more.
For us, choosing St Thomas was definitely the right decision.

The home has a welcoming atmosphere. Staff are generally courteous, considerate and friendly in their observed interactions with residents and visitors alike. They treat my mother with respect for her dignity and privacy. The staff know my mother by name and when we walk in will immediately tell us
where she is before we can ask e.g "She's in the garden". We like being able to make ourselves a cup of tea/coffee at will and enjoy the excellent cakes made in the kitchen.

My sister has been a resident for almost 5 years and in that time we have always found the care home to progressively improve. The staff are possibly your greatest asset. care home in the future I will be treated in the same way. Thank you for all you do.

I really don't know how the staff coped with my husband today as he was in a funny mood. He has only been here for nearly three weeks but in that time the staff have been fantastic to him. He found his stay in hospital something he couldn't cope with but since he has been here he has settled better
despite the occasional outburst he really is a different person.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.298)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.298) out of 10 for Barchester St Thomas Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.726 for Barchester St Thomas Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (77 Excellents x 5) + (29 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.726
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.572 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester St Thomas Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 67 registered maximum number of service users is 13.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 13.4 = 0.672
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
