The room is lovely and bright and the building itself feels more like a house than a care home. The staff seemed to truly care about the residents and to want to do their best. I can't speak for the food and activities but I've no doubt I'd choose this place if I were in that position.
Bravo to the company for doing such a good job and treating the residents with respect, dignity and compassion.
I have put 4 stars for anything that I am not able to pass judgement on, not necessarily because 5 stars are not deserved.
10/10
A home at the centre of Harpenden community clearly improving under new management. Father admitted on emergency respite admission, thanks to the team now moving to a more convenient care home closer to his wife.
Thank you for your review in appreciation of our efforts.
My Mum stayed at Field House for a week for respite care. The staff were very welcoming and made a great effort to make her feel at home and to help her to settle in. After a couple of days Mum seemed more relaxed and felt safe. The staff were very good at contacting me to ask about anything they needed clarification about and fed back helpful information about how she was doing when I visited. She said everyone was very friendly and she would definitely be happy to go back for another stay.
Thank you so much for this lovely review - your mum is welcome back anytime to one of the shows or bbq's this summer!
- Food seemed excellent in my limited experience.
- Staff had good English, but foreign accents difficult for the aged and hard of hearing.
- The best use was made of building not designed for the purpose. Lifts good.
Thank you for your honest feedback and for recognising the positives in our home.
We're thrilled you enjoyed the excellent food and appreciated the effective use of our building, including the reliable lifts - these are key to creating a welcoming, practical environment for residents.

I struggled to settle initially, even though the staff were kind and patient. My condition is rare and therefore it's not immediately apparent what my needs are.
My main issue is that I have to call staff to enable me to get to the toilet but they then leave me for too long sitting on the toilet. I would prefer them to stay close by to help me off the toilet when I'm ready.
I would like to have a full and proper shower not just a fleeting spray over!
I do struggle with communication/speech, the staff are patient with me.
The daily activities have improved considerably recently making the mornings fun, with a community feel.
Although I wish I could have continued to live in my home, Field House is becoming my home.
We appreciate you sharing your experience with our home. It is always wonderful to hear words like "Kind" and "Patient" being used to describe our staff. We want our home to feel like a community, and it's lovely to hear that you feel a part of it. We will discuss your feedback with the home's...
The relief that she is being cared for , well fed and watered, and most importantly that she is safe from serious injuries, is immense.
Mum looks brighter, has put on weight( she was underweight) she is healthier and happier now. It's lovely to walk towards and see her smiling again.
All the staff are friendly, polite, caring and considerate to Mum, and all her family.
The rules are. "It's your Mum's home".
There is a varied daily activity schedule. Crafts, quiz's, sound and dog therapy and a choir!! This is a small example of the activities. The staff follow 'national days'. They are currently gearing up for a Valentines lunch with a profession singer attending. The home is decorated with hearts that the residents have created.
Any issues/problems are quickly resolved. Management are very approachable
We're so grateful that you've taken the time to share your thoughts. We want our home to feel like a community, and it's wonderful to hear that you and your Mum feel a part of it. Hearing that our care brings you peace of mind truly means so much to us and it is so lovely to hear that your Mum is...
My mother has been in Fieldhouse for 12 months, in this time there has been '3' managers, various members of staff have left and now appears to be running with the bare minimum. The activities have been very poor and always seem unplanned and rushed. (lack of staff) It took me 4 months to get regular updates on my mothers overall health and well being and this was with me visiting weekly. The change of managers doesn't seem to change anything, when I'm there they are always in meetings!!! Please note the majority of the staff are amazing.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry your experience didn't meet the standards we aim to provide. Following a recent change in management, we have introduced additional support and training to ensure continuity of care and maintain our high standards. Resident wellbeing remains our top...
Many thanks to the staff who helped my friend have a special lunchtime celebration with friends for his birthday today. He enjoyed his fish and chips followed by a birthday cake supplied by the kitchen and a rendition of "Happy Birthday". Thank you Field House for helping him have a lovely day.
Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear that your friend enjoyed his birthday celebrations at Field House. It sounds as though a wonderful time was had by all. We are looking forward to seeing you again.
I cannot honestly say that I have enjoyed my three years at Field House. I do not claim that the care is very poor, but it is certainly not adequate in many respects. There are not enough carers to be able to spend time with each of the residents and not all the carers have the right attitude to make us feel respected or comfortable. The activities are not always suitable for our age or abilities. It would make us feel more normal if we had more contact with life outside the home. This month (April 2025) a new Home Manager has arrived so it remains to be seen whether any shortcomings will be improved. I certainly hope so.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We have a genuine regard for all of our residents. Our resident's health and well-being is an absolute priority. We have passed your comments to the manager and we understand a review has taken place.
Generally, my experience is excellent. However, there should be an additional toilet on the first floor for residents. At the moment, there is only one toilet for 23 residents.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. It is great to hear that your experience in the home is excellent. We will discuss your feedback with the home's manager to help them continually improve their service. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
Thank you Field House. Mum was there for several months. The staff have been very caring, changing Mum's bandages every few days. I was able to assist several times! Not that I minded as I could evaluate Mum's condition and encourage Mum. The management and administrative staff were exceptionally helpful given the logistical situation (I could only visit once a month for a few days). Everyone has been very kind and helpful, especially at the end, when I needed to talk and ask for practical advice. I warmly recommend Field House whether for a short stay or for longer.
Thank you for your lovely review. We hope Field House care home did everything possible to make the transition as easy as possible. Hopefully you will go away from this feeling like your loved one received the best possible care.
Our mother was a resident at Field House for a 28 day assessment following a long stay in hospital with several health issues and in particular a high output stoma! She was so well cared for here ! I have to especially mention her nurse who was mums favourite, she really went the extra mile for mum at all times and had such a lovely caring nature. We would definitely recommend this home.
Thank you for your lovely review. It is always nice to hear from family members feeling like their loved one is cared for and looked after. We will certainly pass your comments on to the manager.
Field House was a gem of a find! My wife stayed there in November recovering from a hip fracture. I visited her almost every day thus seeing much of the activity in the home. Administration is exemplary from the initial assessment to the final discharge report; so detailed and caring. Security is good, so that one can be sure residents are safe. The atmosphere is very homely; whilst the building is older this gives it a warmth and charm difficult to recreate in more modern functional establishments. It has its quirks, of course, as the building has been adapted, but nevertheless it creates a warmth and quietness perfect for a healing atmosphere. The little garden is a real bonus.
The staff were exceptional: kind, compassionate, encouraging and professional, in all cases, especially the nurses, activity coordinators and catering staff. My wife benefitted greatly in Field House so accelerating her healing, for which we are very thankful.
Thank you for your kind words. It is brilliant to hear that your wife enjoyed her stay with us at Field House Care Home and that she was able to rest and recover during her stay. It is lovely to hear that you were so impressed with the high standards of care provided, the range of activities and...
My mother was resident in Field House Care Home for three years. She received excellent care me enjoyed all the activities and special events. I am very grateful for the particular care and attention as her anxiety levels increased and she could not be left alone. Staff were very considerate and caring.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave the staff at Field House Care Home such a wonderful review. We are thrilled that your mother received such excellent care and that the activities were fun for the whole family! We are so happy to hear she has such a positive experience within the home.
I consider Field House excellent and would recommend it. I have had nothing but care and kindness and smiles from every member of staff from management, nurses, carers, cleaners, laundry lady, kitchen staff, and the lovely ladies who keep us busy with exercises and quizzes. I would also mention the nurses and carers who feed the people unable to feed themselves.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave such a positive review for the staff at Field House Care Home. It is absolutely wonderful to hear you have had nothing but "kindness and smiles from every member of staff". We hope that you continue to enjoy your stay in the home!
All the staff at Field House Harpenden have gone out of their way to help and support me during my stay. I cannot fault their kindness and care. it is an excellent care home and very efficiently run. The amazing staff are extremely thoughtful, empathetic and knowledgeable. They always have time to listen and help and go the extra mile in their care. I have been very happy and well looked after funding my time here convalescing.
Thank you for your feedback. We are very happy to hear you feel so supported during your convalescence care at Field House, and it's wonderful to hear that the staff are going above and beyond to ensure you are receiving the best possible care. We will certainly pass your comments on to the manager.
The staff at Field House have provided wonderful care and support for him during this time, with a real connection and kindness throughout his stay. At times he needed intensive nursing support, but he was always cared for with great attention to his skin, personal comfort and dignity. The staff and manager are very responsive in communicating about his needs, and in liaising with GPs, social services or opticians as required.
His room is always very clean, and the range of food available is excellent. He was always encouraged to engage in activities or just to socialise over lunch, and the outside garden area is really nice in the summer. Although it is an old building, the main lounge and other features give a much more homely feel that some care homes and the staff know the residents well.
I am extremely grateful for all the care the staff provide.
Thank you for your lovely review. It is always nice to hear from family members feeling like their loved one is cared for and looked after and we are so pleased to hear that your Father is receiving high levels of care at Field House. We are happy to hear you feel like a part of our Field House...
Although it's not modern, or purpose-built, it is a fine building which has a warmth about it. The room that Dad occupied was quite small, but it was ok for just a couple of weeks.
I must praise all the staff for their high standards of care, and a friendliness which was combined with their professionalism. Field House is a small home with a welcoming atmosphere, allowing the staff to get to know the residents and families.
Should the need arise in the future, Dad would be happy to return to Field House.
We appreciate you taking the time to leave us your comments. We are very happy to hear you felt at ease with your dad in our care and we are pleased to hear that you had a positive experience with Field House Care Home. Hopefully you will go away from this feeling like your loved one received the best possible care.
Mum had 3 very happy years at Field House and was always cared for by caring, compassionate, professional staff who all knew her well. It has a nice homely atmosphere which made Mum feel comfortable and secure and the family felt reassured and confident that she was well looked after. The management was approachable and always willing to help resolve any queries.
Thank you for your kind words. It is always nice to hear words like Compassionate and Caring being used to describe our staff and we are glad to help you and your family through such a difficult time. We are happy to hear you felt like a part of our Field House family and we are pleased to hear...
We have access to an online portal so we can see what medication our Father is taking. Field House liaises with a local GP who is always on call.
We recommend Field House if you are looking for a local care home in Harpenden.
We appreciate you taking the time to leave us your review. It is always nice to hear from family members feeling like their loved one is cared for and looked after so well, especially hearing words such as "excellent" and "prompt" being used to describe our staff's efforts. Thank you for choosing Field House for your stay.
