Because of staff shortages, the time-lapse between calling for assistance and getting it is excessive. Despite this, the staff are patient and tolerant in difficult situations. Their hard work is much appreciated.
Reply from Alison Reijman, PR Coordinator at The Elms Care Home

Thank you for your review of The Elms and your kind comments about our hard-working, dedicated staff which we will share with them. Like so many other care and nursing homes, we are currently experiencing challenges recruiting staff. We are doing everything we can to attract more people to come and work with us.

Excellent home staff who cannot do enough for the residents, even under times of great pressure. Very clean and tidy home. Food could be more flavoursome and more varied.

I came into this home full of trepidation but was surprised to find how kind the staff were. They always used your first name, helped in any way they could and were always cheerful. The physiotherapy was first class and went above and beyond their remit to get me on my feet again, for which I am extremely
grateful.

All of the Elms staff have given my grandad a new lease of life, he would not be with us now if he had not received the care and attention the staff at the Elms have and still give him. They are always helpful when we have questions and supportive to let us see him during the Covid-19 restrictions either
virtually or in person. They genuinely care about their residents and the activities they offer are amazing. I love how we are kept up to date via facebook, it always brings a smile to my face. The staff go over and above for their residents. Thank you for all that you do!

Very caring home. Every assistance is given towards recovery. Daily physio, well planned and gently progressive. All staff are polite and very helpful. Meals are well planned and prepared. The barbecue was a real treat in the sunshine in the garden, after lockdown.

I have been a resident for over five years, needing nursing care. The staff have treated me very well. The meals are well prepared, but I would prefer a wider choice of food. There is a lovely garden and in the summer we have barbeques.

All staff, from reception, carers, cleaners and the lady nurses, have been helpful, caring and have made my father comfortable. Lovely that he can have hot drinks often and when needed. Home cooked food and asked daily of the list, what he would like. Very good that we have been able to bring in his
larger TV and photos, etc. Everything, including laundry is available. Highly recommend The Elms nursing home.

I spent two weeks here as part of the Isle of Wight covid isolation scheme and post-op recuperation. Having now been home for a few weeks and not feeling at all well, I have just been diagnosed with blood clots, mostly in my legs. I do wonder if, perhaps, an area outside the rooms, such as the car park,
could have been designated for more exercise, as the bedroom sizes prohibited very much walking.
Reply from Alison Reijman, PR Coordinator at The Elms Care Home

Thank you for the time you took to complete a review for The Elms. The car park, unfortunately, would not be a suitable or safe place for exercise. However, we do have a very large garden and paved area, so we will speak with the NHS rehab team to make them aware of your comments and ask them to consider using the space available.

I have had a first-class experience at The Elms. My room is large, comfortable and well-furnished. It is also warm - an important factor for me. The food is also very good - nutritional, tasty and well-served. The staff are excellent, always available if needed, kind and attentive. The biggest plus
for me was being able to bring my cat - thank you!

It's been lovely. At lunch, I can't choose what I want because I have a soft diet - it comes, at supper, I choose something on bread. My son came to see me, and they called me in the lounge. There is a phone in my bedroom, and I speak to my relatives. The carers are kind and efficient. I wet the bed.
I shall be happy there till I end my days.

My mum is happy here. Staff always seem friendly, and they put so much effort into celebrating every occasion including St Patricks Day and Valentines Day etc. Residents always look and seem well cared for, and there seems to be a lot of activities provided often. Sometimes communication can be difficult

My mum spent a couple of weeks with this home before she passed. She was admitted from the hospital and because of COVID, it was a very difficult time.
The staff were extremely supportive and empathetic, especially when Mums condition became end of life care. I was able to spend time with my mum and
was there at the end.
The staff couldn’t do enough for myself or my mum and remained professional and so very caring throughout. I saw many staff from different shift patterns also, and this was across the board.
I would highly recommend this home.
The staff clearly love their job.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.364)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.364) out of 10 for The Elms Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.526 for The Elms Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 116 Ratings = 4.526
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.838 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Elms Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.6 = 0.938
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
