At first we were pleasantly surprised with the care my husband was receiving. However, there were a few occasions when I had to ask about personal care especially teeth cleaning was lacking. Unfortunately, my husband was taken into the hospital and was there for 5 weeks. During this time I had no contact
from the home enquiring how he was. Then unexpectedly on 30/3/24 my husband passed away. Still no contact expressing condolences. His funeral was held 18/4/24 and 2 night carers attended who I had never met the whole time he was there. (I’m grateful for their attendance but the only reason they knew when the funeral was is because my sister phoned them to inform them) but still no communication from the management, not even a card or phone call. They all knew my husband very well and apparently liked him very much but he had very complex health issues. I am extremely disappointed with the lack of compassion and communication while my husband was in the hospital and when he passed away.
Reply from Jane Holden, Admissions Manager at Bradbury House Nursing HomeDear Marion, thank you for your recent review of Bradbury House. We have read all your comments and taken these on board. I am so sorry to hear that you did not receive the communication and condolences for the sad passing of your husband. This is something we always try to do for our families and I'm sorry on this occasion you have not felt supported at this difficult time. The care for our residents and families at all stages is important to us and in particular at the end of their life. I am very happy with the care given to my mum. I can see that she looks well and the respite has aided her recovery from hospital. My mum has made many friends here and enjoys chatting with everyone. The kindness given to Mum by staff and friends has made her respite more enjoyable. Thank you to all
the staff and everyone you are amazing.

We moved my mum to this home last month as we had concerns with the previous care home.
We found this home and went to visit and immediately knew this home is where I wanted Mum to be.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, the home was modern, clean and just felt right.
There a many lovely
touches for the residents, each room has its own front door with a knocker on the outside and the communal rooms are great spaces to be.
The end-of-life care was also excellent, the staff were warm and caring to the resident and family.
My only regret is we didn’t find this home earlier as it is truly outstanding.

My mother moved into Bradbury House in August. It was a pretty traumatic move for her due to her dementia, but the staff understood this and made her feel welcome; they are very understanding. It is taking a bit of time for her to settle, but she is getting there with the help of the staff. The care
home is very nice, light and airy, with various sitting areas for the residents, outside space for them to enjoy, with a small woodland walk, two courtyards, and a very nice, friendly feel to it. Highly recommend this care home.

My mum has recently been unwell and now requires full-time nursing care. She has been at Bradbury House for almost 3 weeks and seems to have settled really well and wants to stay. We cannot fault the kindness and care of all the staff here, they are friendly and helpful, with lots of things provided
to do. Mum still likes to go out and Bradbury provides a safe environment for her to live the best life she can. Thank you to everyone for making her transition into a nursing home so nice and easy and everyone being so kind to us, I really hope she will be able to stay as I feel she is safe and well cared for.

You need to be certain that your relative has the very best of care. At Bradbury House every single member of staff, without exception, have nothing but the resident's best interests at heart, not just in their role of ‘caring’ but also in the way they engage with them. They are always happy, they will
always listen and they will always spend as much time as the resident wants to ensure that they have no causes to worry or be distressed. The facilities are excellent and the activities varied. The overall environment is one of positiveness and happiness. Any concerns or feelings of guilt were quickly extinguished by their attitude to the residents. The question I asked myself constantly is “Is it in my relatives best interest?” In the case of Bradbury House, undoubtedly it is.

Our mum had already experienced respite care at Bradbury House and already as a family, we viewed that as caring and supportive and Mum was always happy there. Consequently, we considered Bradbury House without any hesitation for respite again this August, with a view to settling our dear mum there
for long-term consideration. Once again, she settled promptly, was relaxed, less anxious, smiling and happy whenever any family members visited. The staff warmly introduce themselves, commenting on her progress without hesitation. We are delighted! Again!

Mum came to Bradbury House to convalesce after several months in hospital. Everyone we have dealt with has been very helpful and welcoming; Mum has been well looked after and treated with kindness and respect. That there is an on-site nurse has given us an additional sense of reassurance about her care

This is a good nursing home. However, I feel that the area of palliative care needs improvement. My stepfather, I feel needed faster interventions when it came to pain relief and just general human contact in the last 2 weeks of his life. He was a character and could moan but I felt that it was not
until I intervened that finally regular pain relief was issued - even then not through a Driver and his final prescription never made it to him from the pharmacy. Two nurses saved the day by being on the ball and checking to give him regular injections of morphine and other forms of pain relief. He died in the morning. I am not sure if he was alone or if someone was sat with him. Nobody told me. I collected his belongings and nobody came to see me or offer condolences other than the receptionist on arrival. I made 3 trips in the lift alone to remove his things. Never saw or spoke to anyone. Just feel a more human approach is needed.

Based on the seven weeks that my mother has been in Gavin Astor, I can only say I am disappointed with her care. She needs help with her personal care as a dementia resident and this has been sadly lacking. The staff tell me that they cannot force her with help but when I find out that showers and washing
of hair have not been done during this duration, I find this extremely worrying. Surely a bit of extra firmness could help. I have had contact with the manager this end and she is arranging a meeting with staff. Hopefully, things will improve.
Reply from Jane Holden, Home Admissions Advisor at Bradbury House Nursing HomeDear Maureen, thank you for your review and we are very sorry to hear that you are disappointed with your mother's care. You have stated that her personal care is lacking. I can assure you that every attempt is made to carry out personal care. However, as you say the staff have reiterated that we can not force this upon an individual and we do try to encourage as much as possible. We agree it is worrying, but on the occasion that you are aware of, your mother did have an enjoyable bath experience. I can confirm that the manager has spoken to the staff about the importance of personal hygiene.
I hope this explanation is satisfactory and if you have any further concerns then please do not hesitate to contact us at Gavin Astor House.

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
