I am very happy with the care provided for my stepfather since he arrived at Oaken Holt Nursing and Residential Home earlier this year. The staff are always extremely kind, helpful and courteous and the atmosphere is relaxed with regular activities. The staff helped my stepfather settle in well and
are always helpful when I visit. The food is very varied and good quality and the house and grounds are extremely well-kept all year round.

I am very happy with the care for my mother, who has been a resident at Oaken Holt Nursing and Residential Home since April 2023. The attention of the staff to her needs and her care requirements cannot be faulted. There are activities on every day which she can participate in if she so wishes. There
is nothing that is too much trouble. I would not hesitate to recommend Oaken Holt to anyone as it is a friendly, home from home care home with very friendly staff. I am happy that she is being looked after well.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltKathryn, we would like to thank you for your words of kindness which are very much appreciated. My mother-in-law spent just over 2 weeks in respite care while we were away. She was very well looked after and said the meals were delicious and varied. It was a clean and pleasant environment. The staff were pleasant and responsive, and there were quite a lot of activities which helped with getting
to know people and passing the time although weekends were a bit quiet.

When our Mother was transferred to Oaken Holt Nursing and Residential Home in 2018 she was recovering from hospitalisation with pneumonia and had been very close to passing away. Thanks to the exceptional care she received from all the wonderful staff at Oaken Holt, she not only recovered but flourished
in her new surroundings, taking part in activities, outings, and Scrabble competitions and enjoying all her meals and endless cups of tea. All the family were able to enjoy her being around for the next 5 years and during that time she even got to meet her great-grandchildren from Australia. Sadly she recently passed away following a fall, but she had previously enjoyed the healthiest period of her later life and that was solely due to the unbelievable care and attention that she received. I would not hesitate to recommend Oaken Holt to anyone who requires care in their later life.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltPaul, thank you for taking the time to leave us such a fantastic review and for your kind words and recognition of the team at Oaken Holt. My mother has been a resident of the Coach House at Oakenholt for 3.5 years. The care she has received has been excellent, and the staff are attentive and very responsive to requests. It is a big plus that there are qualified nurses on call at all times. The house is kept very clean and additional services
such as hairdressing, physio etc, are all very good. The activities team are good fun and keeps everyone entertained.
In addition, my father received excellent end-of-life care at Wytham House and passed without distress. Covid was a tough time for all, and the staff have done a great job. Thank you.

I find the staff very approachable and apparently with plenty of time available to talk, although clearly fully occupied. I am pleasantly surprised to be addressed by my first name, although only a weekly visitor. Similarly pleasantly surprised to often be offered tea and a biscuit when with my friend
when he gets his. Rating for food and drink cannot be personal, as I cannot properly comment on value for money, as I have very little experience with Residential or Care Homes. It seems a bit expensive to me, especially as my friend has so far felt unable to join in with communal meals and is able to participate in very few social activities. However, that is his choice, and I can see just how much is provided! However, he seems so much better here than he was at home that value for money is clearly high. Rating for food and drink is on what I see but not experience.

Mum is very well cared for, and the staff understand her needs well. They are respectful of her wishes but are keen to encourage her to be sociable and more active. They are genuinely pleased if she enjoyed an activity.
We like seeing photos of her as she cannot remember what she has done in the week,
so can't tell us.
The nursing staff are particularly diligent, always communicating well and getting on top of any illnesses quickly.

For the eighteen months that my mother was a resident, I had an overwhelmingly positive experience of Oaken Holt Nursing and Residential Home. Even during the difficult Covid period when access was limited. Mum thoroughly enjoyed her time there, right up until the end. The carers were all wonderful
and developed close bonds with her. The movement team were sympathetic to her needs and kept us well informed. Mum developed close friendships with her fellow residents encouraged by the games and other activities she played with them every day. This had the added benefit of keeping her brain active. As she eventually declined her nursing care was exemplary. A group of residents and carers even attended her funeral, which says it all.

For us it is always a difficult decision to put Mum into residential respite care even if just for a short while. It was important that we found somewhere which felt consistent, had a high standard of care and was genuinely warm, welcoming, caring and calm for our mother. The price was high, however
all our needs were met at Oakenholt, so a logical choice.
We had visited on three separate occasions before making the decision and each time the reception from management and staff was always good. During her stay, my mother was also calm, clean and comfortable here for nearly three weeks of respite. The staff were friendly and attentive as well as open and communicated well with us when needed and for my mother, who has Alzheimer's, we found the staff considerate to her as an individual. They were gently encouraging and inclusive, and so she had a good stay and we were able to enjoy our holiday. On our return, she was calm and content which enabled a smooth transition on her return home.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.147)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.147) out of 10 for Oaken Holt is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.322 for Oaken Holt is calculated as follows: ( (134 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (21 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 180 Ratings = 4.322
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Oaken Holt is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

As the Home Manager, I believe that our residents should be treated with the highest quality of care possible and endeavour to ensure that my team and I always maintain this.

I lead by example and involve myself in the day-to-day life of the home as well as making Oaken Holt a happy and enjoyable place in which to live and work.

I take a lot of pleasure from spending time with relatives and residents, understanding the important contribution that these relationships make to the successful running of a care home. I have over 15 years of experience in the care sector, having worked in various roles including carer, senior carer and deputy manager, before becoming home manager. All my roles have given me insight and knowledge, which I draw upon each day and share with my team.

It is important to me to develop team members to achieve their best, which means that together we make a difference to the lives of each of the residents in our care.
