My parents have both been at Oakenholt for nearly four years now. The first year was very good, then due to a change of management things went downhill rather dramatically. Lack of staff, particularly at weekends and not much activities if any at weekends. However the new Manager has been a breath of
fresh air and stamped his mark on the home and the residents and staff seem a lot happier again. There could still be more going on at weekends but he has proved to be a more than positive appointment.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltThank you for your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you are happy with the new home manager and you feel that our services are improving as a result. We agree that activities are important and will look to see how we can address this. We are always looking to learn and improve the services we offer and our home manager would be happy to arrange a time to speak with you directly.

Overall we were happy with the care Mum received. The staff were all friendly and made Mum feel at home. This was the first time she had been in respite so an anxious time for us and her. She was pleased with the quality of the meals and found her room comfortable. As Mum suffers from dementia it was
difficult questioning her about her week but we can only be guided by her saying that she would go back at any time!
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltMany thanks for your positive review, Yvonne. Your Mum was a joy to care for and to hear that she said that she would come back at any time is lovely to hear - we would love to have her back at any time! Your wonderful comments have been passed on to the team who will be delighted to hear your feedback.

After reviewing a number of care homes, I made the decision that the environment that I experienced at Oaken Holt would be perfect for my mother's needs, and I was not disappointed. The management team are all excellent, taking the time to understand my mother's needs and showing complete confidence
that these could be met. From the moment we arrived, the staff were fantastic, and I was reassured that I had made the right decision. My overriding memory is the calm feel and the engagement that the staff provided. This has been by far the best experience we have received from any local care home, and would fully recommend it to others.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltThank you, Robert, for your kind words and recognition of the team here at Oaken Holt and great to hear that we give confidence. The care, services and support we deliver as a team to your mother and the whole family are extremely important to us. Your feedback will be shared with the team.

My 98-year-old father had been living independently but with increasing care needs (Parkinson's and heart failure). It became clear in August that he needed 24h-our care and decided that it was time to find a care home. We visited Oaken Holt on a Tuesday and he moved in on the Friday.
It is a wonderful
place, with a fantastic homely feeling and lovely buildings and surrounds. But this is what really makes it stand out (and I have a medical background): the staff were amazingly welcoming (sincerely so), irrespective of their professional background and one could not wish for better care and attention than that given to my father and visitors. He continued to deteriorate and within a few days, it was clear that he was nearing the end. Again the manner in which this was handled was exemplary and he died comfortably and in peace. The staff were great with the family, enabling us to be with him day and night for his last days. Nothing was too much and we are eternally grateful.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltThank you, Paul for your kind words and recognition of the team here at Oaken Holt. We are really sorry for your loss, and we hope we made your father’s last moments as peaceful as possible. Your comments will be passed on to the team.

My mother recently became a resident of Oaken Holt. My mother struggled with the change but the manager and all staff members have been exemplary in their care and attention to detail in helping my mother with this transition. I can't thank all members of staff enough.

I came in for respite while my career was on holiday and felt the care was so good for my needs as I am unable to wash, dress etc. I can walk a little but decided I need more care.
The staff are lovely and the food is also very good. I particularly like taking part in quizzes and bingo. Through the
sunny day, it was nice to sit outside with the other residents. I am very happy in my room and love the views of the grounds.

Care exemplary. Mother can be very difficult to clean but they gently persevere. As she now needs regular turning and help with drinking they are totally on the case.
I appreciate that they have been willing to keep her where she is even though she has Dementia and they now have a special Dementia
unit.

Oaken Holt is a very special place and that is because of the people who work there. You are the most amazing set of individuals, each with your own special skills and experience, but all of you show extraordinary kindness to the residents. The atmosphere from the moment you drive up through beautiful
grounds towards the lovely house, and step inside, is one of tranquillity and love. Nobody could have done more than you all did in your own ways to help my husband navigate his advancing dementia, fading eyesight and to cope with the long term chronic pain he had suffered following his stroke in 2011.
I could not have wished for a better home than Oaken Holt for my husband, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

There has been a huge improvement in almost every aspect of the Home since the arrival of the new manager a couple of months ago. It is noticeable that both residents and staff appear happier and the whole atmosphere at Oaken Holt has lightened. Some staffing issues have improved and we are optimistic
that this will continue. We have been able to stay for lunches again after Covid restrictions and have been impressed with the quality of the food. The range and frequency of activities provided for residents is increasing and we hope this will go even further. We continue to be pleased with the level of genuine care and attention provided by the permanent members of staff.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltThank you, for your honest and detailed feedback, we are glad you are noticing the improvements that our staff are working hard to make. Giving quality, person-centred care is what we always strive for and your feedback will be passed onto the team. Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review.

My most recent visit was in March. Travelling from Yorkshire I find, with some notice, I can visit Mum on the days and times that suit me without any problem. Reception is friendly and helpful making sure visitors are Covid clear and safe. Mother's room is large, pleasant and south facing with views
over the parkland. Carers are always popping in to attend to Mum's needs, give her her meds, ask her choices for meals, offer her drinks or see to housekeeping. Staff that I have met have been pleasant and well-meaning. However, due probably to Brexit, there is a big turnover of staff, difficulty in recruiting permanent staff and continual use of agency people, some of who seem to lack proper training. This is not unique to Oaken Holt of course but it does make forming a relationship with some of the carers difficult for Mum and for them to have an on going understanding of her issues and needs. Aside from this the environment is pleasant and the care given is generally good.
Reply from Home Manager at Oaken HoltThank you for your review and your kind words, which I will pass on to the team. There is nothing more important to us than the well-being of the people we support, and in response to the well-documented sector-wide shortage of carers, we continue to invest in the recruitment, retention and training of our colleagues. With regards to recruitment, the home has actively been recruiting and the agency usage has dropped massively. The home has new care team members joining monthly which has a positive impact on the home and the residents. When agency usage is used we ensure that we are using the same team members for consistency.

My father stayed in the Coach House for respite, and we found the staff very supportive of him and all the family. The deputy manager was very kind and helpful with queries, managing extensions to his stay and keeping in touch, and his lead carer, in particular, always took time with him. The food was
excellent, and the views were just stunning. The team were very helpful in enabling my mother to visit within Covid protocols, which made the stay much more manageable.

I live and work thousands of miles from the UK, so I cannot visit Mum very often. My primary concern is therefore that my Mum is cared for professionally 24/7 - both medically and personally.
I'm happy to say that for all of her years at Oakenholt, that is exactly how Mum has been cared for.
For the
first couple of years, enjoying three tasty and nutritious meals each day, and being reminded to take her medicines on time, her wellbeing improved noticeably!
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Oakenholt, and I recently told both of my children that if the need arises, Oakenholt would be my own first choice!

Dad stayed at Coach House for more than a year before moving to Wytham House and repeatedly spoke very fondly of the carers and the excellent food. The deputy manager at Oaken Holt Nursing and Residential Home was very supportive, quick to respond to queries and to help us as a family address concerns
and questions. Life in a care home is not easy and during the pandemic, times were hard for everyone but given all this, we still feel that we made the right choice in placing Dad at Coach House. The lead carers at Coach House in particular were so kind and we were very grateful to them for their support to Dad, and us as a family. The downsides circled around the lack of engagement/management from the overall director, (who has since left) the regular loss of staff, and gaps in activities for residents.
Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Oaken HoltThank you for your kind words and I will feed them back to the team at Oaken Holt. As the new home manager for Oaken Holt once of my focuses is to enrich the residents life’s a different range of activities within the home. Recruitment is an on going process and we have had new applicants in the process of starting. Lastly, a new regional manager has been appointed and this will be announced once they have started with Caring Homes.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.147)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.147) out of 10 for Oaken Holt is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.322 for Oaken Holt is calculated as follows: ( (134 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (21 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 180 Ratings = 4.322
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Oaken Holt is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

As the Home Manager, I believe that our residents should be treated with the highest quality of care possible and endeavour to ensure that my team and I always maintain this.

I lead by example and involve myself in the day-to-day life of the home as well as making Oaken Holt a happy and enjoyable place in which to live and work.

I take a lot of pleasure from spending time with relatives and residents, understanding the important contribution that these relationships make to the successful running of a care home. I have over 15 years of experience in the care sector, having worked in various roles including carer, senior carer and deputy manager, before becoming home manager. All my roles have given me insight and knowledge, which I draw upon each day and share with my team.

It is important to me to develop team members to achieve their best, which means that together we make a difference to the lives of each of the residents in our care.
